Why Schools should NOT have mandatory Uniforms. Your Opinion wanted!

I think a lot of people who think school uniforms are horrible are people who are still in school. When i was in grade school i hated school uniforms never wanted to wear them. But the longer and longer i was in high school i realized i didnt mind the uniforms. But i think thats because my high school uniforms were you had to have a button down shirt didnt matter color or anything and dress pants. that really wasnt bad.

I agree with IRS and Ramp. Unless your at home making your own clothes, your really not expressing that much by your clothing.

Even by going out of your way to try and prove your different then everyone else, you still get labeled. Look at different scenes, goth, punk, etc. Most of them will say they are expressing this and that, yet their dress, music, views, etc are alot of times the same as their friends. Its not really being an individual when you copied your style from someone else, be it friends, magazines, tv, or whatever.

I really never understood why uniforms were such a big deal. You should be at school learning things, not worrying about your image to everyone else. A lot of people in school you probably will rarely see when you graduate.

At my work we all wear uniforms. Granted its a power plant and we have to wear them cause they are fire rated incase a fire breaks out the clothes dont melt to our skin. But still, no one cares that we look like the next guy. I dont think I have ever even heard anyone bring up the conversation.

Its weird though, by trying to be different your acting like alot of other people doing the same thing. Is that really being an individual?

If schools and the goverment in general start making choices concerning the liberty of expresion / free choice ( a right every individual living in a democratic country should and must have ) such as what clothes to wear, then they can as well tell you what you can eat, what you can watch, what music/radio show you can listen to....the list is endless.
!

I think you are getting a tad hyperbolic here. If I may wax a tad David Hume, you have given up quite a bit of personal liberty already. You have entered into a social contract with your government, we all have, and we are better for it.

We have all agreed, either purposefully or implicitly through inaction, to give up our 'liberty' on the roads and highways. In giving up a little freedom in our cars and trucks/suvs we gain back a huge amount of protection from other drivers and our own shortcomings when it comes to driving an automobile (and let me assure you most drivers are TERRIBLE, most drivers do not even know half of their area's laws).

We have all gained a large amount of protection thanks to FDA meat inspection while surrending some of our liberty to sell any meat any way we choose. I do not think any of us miss the total freedom of meat making/selling anarchy we have given up in this arena.

Ben Franklin said, "Those who would give up essential Liberty to purchase a little tempory safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety." Well, Old Ben was not always right. If fact this is one example of hyperbolic, ill-considered catch-phrases doing more harm than good. The very nature of Government is that we all give up a LITTLE Liberty in order to gain a LOT of Security/Safety. I am sure Ben would argue what he meant by 'essential'.

Yes, we must always guard against Governmental abuse. It is healthy to question our leaders and examine both their motives and their actions. It is not healthy to treat every official act as an attempt to install Tyranny.

I understand what you're saying Diomed, it's true that we are giving away a bit of our freedom everyday in exchange for security, but at what price and what kind of security ?

If for example you loose your job, you can't pay for healthcare, bills, you don't have the money to buy food for your family, you really think the goverment will help you out ?? Are you 100% positive that you're so important as an individual for the goverment, that they'll step down help you anyway they can ?

This is the security I would like to see from my goverment and not the kind of security they currently provide. I don't feel treathened by any so called terrorist organization, i'm not afraid that a foreign country will attack mine and robb me of my freedom.

But what I'm afraid of is that due to financial/economic crysis or any other "artificially" created crysis, I'll loose everything I have and won't be abble to provide for myself and my familly. And this is something my goverment doesn't protect me from and if I'm quite frank, I think they're at least partially to blame for this crysis to have happened.

This is already going way to political for my taste so I won't go any further with this discusion.

We all have our points of view, opinions which may be the same or totaly different from anybody else...And that's the way it should be :)

Yes to uniforms, but they do not got such a thing as uniforms at schools in Norway :)

No uniforms gives you peoples artistic style.

Since you're in highschool you wouldn't get the punks, scenes, metal heads, hardrockers, rappers, country folk, sexy girls in sexy clothes, etc.

Ofc you do, just they are wearing uniforms >_>

I am with you on that thesis Shuppa: the government should do a much better job than it has and you are correct that de-regulation, lack of enforcement and terrible management by the federal government has lead to the current mess we are in.

most of the responses say it it's how someone expresses themself. . . i think if i wanna wear my band shirts and khaki shorts i should be able to. simple as that

Just because you want to doesn't mean you can, Major Emish.

Nearly 90% of the time (made up number but its plausable) of high school students or any students in school that currently do not enforce school uniforms will be against it. Their main reason will be the freedom of expression. Which is a horrible crutch to rely on when the reason why there is so much self-esteem problems in the United States stems from high school. It is sad to say but when observing a high school class (which I did just last week) the majoriy of kids being picked on had "Wal-mart clothes." I overheard this term from a seemingly stuck up girl.

In all reality uniforms would be an equalizer throughout the school. The poor kids would no longer look poor as the rich kids are wearing the exact same thing. The era of retards with popped collars will vanish. (Every time I see a man/kid with a popped collar I just want to run them over and give my car a new paint job)

If all of you who are opposed to it just think about it (not just go meh and say no, but actually think) uniforms would help a great deal. Those sexy girls will still be sexy and come on, I know most of you think girls in SCHOOL unifroms are hot. They would most likely be wearing skirts as is the standard school uniform for women. Goths will still be goths, punks, nerds, jocks and morons will still be what they are

Here in the UK, nearly every Primary and Secondary school (equivalent of Elementary & High school) has its own school uniform. In the USA it's the exact opposite so both countries are used to their way of doing things; therefore I'd assume that those of you from America are less aware of the benefits of Uniform and more aware of the benefits on non-uniform (vise-versa for Brits like myself).

I like my school uniform. I also enjoy the few rare occasions when we are allowed to wear our own clothing, but I would definatly prefer to have a Uniform than to come in every day in my own clothing. Heres why:
Theres 2 mains reasons why I think this.
The first, is convinience. My Uniform has plently of pockets, some with zips which allow me to carry useful, valuable items on my at all times without the risk of them falling out. When our school has an own clothes day I find carrying things like my Bus Pass, house keys etc much more of a hastle. So basically, uniform does have its uses. I also like to look smart & Intelligent although many people I know wouldn't share that opinion.
The second and more important reason I prefer Uniform is because of discrimination. I know that even on the few days we get to wear our own clothing people get bullied and mocked because of what they choose to wear. Also, fromn what I've seen about American schools (I may be wrong) people always seem to be divided into distinct groups, the most annyoing of which to me is the popular and unpopular grouping. Sure, this happens in schools worldwide, but from what I've seen its at its worst in the USA, primarily because of fashion. With Uniform the only cool/uncool thing you can do to change your appearance is how you wear your tie and your shirt. In that sense, people will have fewer reasons be bullied.
Thats just my opinion though.
