I don't understand...
For all who don't understand, "Cleverbot" is an AI-esque program that tries to communicate with you. Personally, I'm not convinced that there aren't people behind the scenes answering you, due to a few reasons:
1.) No unified, repeated responses.
Example: 5 different results for the question "A/S/L?" at different times.
2.) Relatively little ability to continue conversations over more than one input. Granted, there are a lot of people simultaneously using it, and this is a very tough thing to do, but its responses tend to be way off unless you repeat something in your input. In other words, little coherency.
Example:
Granted, I specifically picked things that would be difficult for a computer to respond to. However, a few tests showed that inputting things such as song lyrics would give the next line, as we found out with Crazy Train and Bark at the Moon; Free Bird didn't seem to work. This would be consistent with not having experience with the subject, but a quick Google turned up the following, which was right in line with Cleverbot:
Overall, I'd consider it a good attempt to emulate a person, but the idiosyncratic nature of some responses leaves that to question as well as the clearly computerized nature of some responses, and to me suggests otherwise. However, your mileage will vary. Conclusion: It seems to be a fairly solid program, but I'm not quite convinced.
And for those wondering, yes, I'm an engineering student planning to go to graduate school for robotics, and I have done a little bit of work with machine logic and AI.
