Nvidia 8800 GT problems.

So I was playing COD W@W tonight and my system froze up. It froze, then all over the screen there were frozen pixels of solid pink, blue, and green pockmarked all over in no particular pattern. The system eventually went to a blue screen with info about a video card crash. I updated my drivers and started up W@W again. About 5 minutes into the game the same thing happened.

Anyone have any idea if this is something to do with recent drivers having issues, a simple problem I can fix, an anomaly that shouldn't continue happening, or should I be in the market for a new video card?

And if I need to be looking for a new card that will run for a Win Vista 32 system, Dell XPS. I don't really have any money to drop right now, but within a month or 2 I'll have plenty for a new card so all suggestions, preferably less than $250 though.
 
1st thing, FOR SURE.....pop your case open...and DUST, DUST, DUST!!! Be sure to check contacts on your GPU. Dust IS conductive, and I would suggest starting there.

After that, you're most likely feeling a GPU going bad.

NOTE*: Don't neglect the slot! Dust will have an effect there as well!!!

I had the EXACT same problem. Actually, I'm getting the same problem from time to time. By the way, do you have a eVGA mobo? With the 750i FTW SLI, which I have, they've been having some video corruption issues. Supposedly, the updated BIOS should have fixed the problem but sometimes, I still get that blue screen and jagged colors on the screen.

Yeah, i'm going to walmart at 4am with my cousin tomorrow, I'll pick up a can of duster and blow out the case. Assuming the problem is solved after that, will there be any long term effects for sure? And assuming my GPU is going out, any recommendations?
 
I have several options available! Let me know if there are any special circumstances you may have.

I haven't bought a can of duster since High School. I just use an old toothbrush and a sprinkling of alcohol-based liquid when necessary. Take a toothbrush to it and you'll be happy!

Long Term Effects....shorting of pins on the GPU CAN cause permanent damage. I have to tell you, however, that I have fixed hundreds of machines by removing dust. Try dusting first, then we'll get into the nitty-gritty. ;)
 
Oh, and one other thing I didn't mention that may be important.

The error only occurs when I run a game, and it usually takes about 5 minutes.

And i'll attempt the toothbrush trick in the morning. I'm heading to bed soon. Gotta get up at 4am for Black Friday shopping... I just like to go and watch people act like children with my cousin. Its a family tradition :D

Errors only when running games USUALLY means an issue when USING your GPU. It doesn't take much at all to display normal screens.

Aforementioned advice applies ;)

I recently thought I fixed it, however it came back 2 days ago. I think I have the fix, though.

Do you happen to be running the nVIDIA control pannel? You can check by looking down in the system dock, on the bottom right. If there's a little green nvidia icon down there, try right clicking and clicking exit or something like that. Also, if you're running nvidia nTune, get rid of it. That causes a lot of problems on it's own.


Just a suggestion, take at your own risk (little to none, but just wanted a disclaimer)

Please pardon my stupidity! You are 100% correct, WaterSnake. If you are using Win7, there is a known issue with the CCC program. I ALWAYS recommend driver-only packages.

That sad thing is that it DID come with my driver package, and from what I've observed, it's what's been causing MY problems.

Now, another thing that you can do is try and take a screen shot. I know CoDW@W allows you to do this. I took CoD4 screenshots with my problem, and the 'artifacts' do show up on the screenshots.

I know it pains and scares you to see the problem come up again, but it'll help us to see the pictures.
 
my buddy had the same prob

but dont toss it out just yet when ya get your new card if ya have two pcie slots then bridge ur old one to ur new one and use it for a physics card. since it doesnt run graphics it it will do what ya need it to do. Hate to break it to ya but your card is telling u its goin out man. so be ready.... but i highly recommend a air compressor to nlow ur pc and card out. It works way more sufficiently than those 6.00 cans of whippits from walmart

I was thinking about doing that when I get a new GPU.
 
Well, I cleaned my machine up inside and out, as thoroughly as can be done. It actually got worse (died faster) than before I had cleaned it. I'm going to be getting a new card in a couple weeks, and just have to play games on my laptop until then, meaning no TF2 :(

So, I'm sure this is a redundant question, but would one of you be willing to help me through setting up my current card for a physics card upon installing the new card?

And also, some suggestions for what new card to get would be great.

Thanks for all the help so far. I really, really appreciate it! It makes the issue a little more bearable having some people to get help from, and so quickly at that. You guys are great.
 
I had the same problem a few days ago.

I took my card out to clean the dust out and then the problems started happening (same as you)

Uninstall your video drivers, restart, let it auto install, restart, then install the newest drivers. Worked like a charm when I did it.
 
Well the GPU is completely dead now. I'm going to be buying a new card. Most likely going to be an Nvidia GeForce 9800GT, unless anyone has a better recommendation, or believes this to be some massive mistake for some reason.

Also, I do plan on trying to use my old card as a Physics card, I assume one of you will be able to help with that?

I know you have it solved, but could you define dead? Like the screen won't even turn on anymore?

The problem that has been discussed throughout this thread happens faster every time I turn on the PC. It froze up after aprox. 8 minutes of playing a game, then the second time 5 minutes, after that about 2. Now it freezes up and locks after just passing through the login screen, while the startup programs loaded.

Also, everything freezes up, the keyboard doesn't even respond. No caps lock light or anything. Is it possible its more than just the video card or would that cause everything to stop working?

If the GPU is dead, you won't be able to use it for a Physics card. Once it's dead it's dead.
