PCI-E slot not working?

So this morning I got woken up by the phone, and couldn't get back to sleep, so I decided, hey why not play some TF2? I booted up my computer and it gave that normal beep indicating that all (or so I thought) was good. Then I realized that nothing was displaying on my monitor, my first instinct as a newbie computer nerd was to unplug and replug the cables connecting from my graphics card to my monitor. That didn't work and I took a closer look at the situation: I own a Samsung SyncMaster 22 inch monitor, it turns on good and it seems to go into standby mode, so I thought that it was getting no signal. I switched over ot my HP 22 inch monitor, which also did not work. At this point I started getting worried... I replaced my current graphics card (NVIDIA 9800 GTX+) with my old one (ATI Radeon HD 3450), didn't work also. :crying: Super worried at this point, start removing and cleaning every piece of hardware possible, but no cigar. Of course the only thing I could do now was plug my cables into my onboard graphics, and wallah! It worked like charm, but of course the onboard graphics suxs (NVIDIA 7100 :glare:), can't game with that. Which leads me to believe that my one and only PCI-E slot is dead... is there anyway of fixing this or will I have to get new motherboard/computer? On a tight budge here lol. If you get this far, thanks for reading all of this, story-writting is in my blood :P Hope you can help! Thanks!

Make sure your contacts are working ok, and plugged in correctly. Also, your mobo should have multiple pci slots, so try another one.

I doubt you can fix it. Just pick up a 780I or 790I mobo. They are awesome for only 140-160 bucks.

well if its over 1 year old, more than likely he cant fix it. the only possible fix is via the manufacturer. depending on what kinda cpu & motherboard you have, im sure we can find you a competent replacement for a really good price. just need you to post the following info:

1. cpu (intel/amd & speed, socket info is needed as well)
2. memory (how much you have & what the bus speed is) (go to 4allmemory.com or crucial.com to find out the bus speed if you dont know it)
3. depending on how big your hard drive is & how much you have on it, youll need to back up the info since getting a new motherboard will mean wiping the os clean off the hard drive (which is something i hate, but unfortunately its required).

based on the above info that you provide for us, im sure we can help ya get a decent if not good motherboard w/o breaking your bank bro!

Thank you for trying to help and the others as well! I just recieved word from my friend who knows a computer hardware store I can go to, he says if I buy a new mobo, the workers there will install it for me for a small fee or even for free! So i'ma head there in a day or two! Thanks again!

One thing no one mentioned is your power supply. Do both of your video cards use the same power supply connector? If so, it's possible that your PSU is not supplying the correct voltage to either of the cards.

chapped does present a good thought. how big exactly is your psu?

wott i might have an answer for u

ok tried 2 monitors and switched vid cards? if u didn't switch vid cards the problem your graphics card is all burnt up ( happened to me wit a 8800 gts. if you have switched vid cards wit the same result and u onboard video on your mainboard. you wil have to go into your mainboard bios and turn off the onboard video. now if it is no of those problem in the mobo time for a new build.

When you plug in the new gfx card or even the old one does it turn on when power is connected to it. IE Does the GPU cooling fan spin? If not its the PSU if so then it is what you expected the mobo.

THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING! I was able to fix it by simple getting a new motherboard, and WALLAH! My computer is running fine now :D Back to playing TF2 :D!
