Budget is $800
Only the tower is needed (No OS)
He would like an i7 and at least 500GB of HDD space.
This computer will be used for the web, and editing videos.

Try an i5 750 based system. A system based on the i7 920 is going to be fairly expensive.

I know, but it doesn't need a good graphics card, or a beastly case.
Just an i7 are his requests.

what about an i7 860?

that would allow you to spend more money else where

I think you may need some video card power for editing videos; don't quote me on that.

Here's what I came up with, $789.89 (not shipped)

1. CPU: Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115214

2. MOBO: ASUS P7P55 LX LGA 1156 Intel P55 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131604

3. RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231193

4. GPU: BFG Tech BFGR79512GTOCE GeForce 7900GT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143066

5. PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

6. HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

7. CASE: Antec Three Hundred Illusion http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066

If you're going to be video editing you definitely want a decent graphics card. Mines similar to Snuf's but a bit faster in the CPU/GPU department, hence the higher price. I am also assuming you are supplying CD/DVD drives, Flash Readers ect.

1. Case/PSU: Antec Nine Hundred + EA650 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 650W Power Supply

2. CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core

3. MOBO: Foxconn FlamingBlade GTI LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX

4: Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

5: GPU: POWERCOLOR AX5750 1GBD5-PDH Radeon HD5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16

6: HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green WD5000AADS 500GB SATA 3.0Gb/s

$882.94 Before ship

You can save alot of money by sacrificing the i7, easily could knock off $150-$200 by going w/ a slightly slower Core 2 Quad (skt 775) and DDR2 system. To be honest from what it sounds like he's using this for he'd never really know the difference and it would be more than adequate.

Exactly.

A q9550 is barely slower than an i7 system, while costing alot less.

i5 is pretty much the same performance as an i7, minus hyper threading (which will only help during multi threaded applications, and there's not many yet)

A little over, but should be a fairly powerful build. If you were willing to spend a bit more you'd be able to get huge performance leaps. This should be very good though. Hope this helps!

a 7900gt?

2004 called they want their gpu back

But seriously, that is one old card.

I guess it is fine if he doesn't plan on playing any games.

The budget is $800, and not a penny over. And no socket 775 or DDR2. I appreciate the help, but I won't invest in old tech.

With the Setup I posted and the 7900GT, he will get 50+ FPS on CS:S.

This would be the system you're looking for, and honestly, it's not going to do well for what this guy wants...

Things that I don't like about the above system: weak video card, not enough RAM, motherboard is questionable (I wouldn't buy it, but its within budget), and there are better PSU's (see Corsair). I would not buy this system if I had $800 to spend on new components.

Now I'm going to put together an i5 system that is comparable to this system but costs less and performs better.

Intel Core i5 750: $199.99

Corsair 650W PSU: $98.99 (one of the best PSU's in the business)

Samsung Spinpoint 500GB Hard Drive: $54.99

That system will rock his world. He's not getting an i7, but the i5, which is nearly as fast at stock (is as fast when overclocked) is about $90 cheaper, and the components you buy with it are much cheaper and still high quality. The power supply is better, the motherboard is leaps and bounds better, you get more and higher quality RAM, and the video card is far superior to what he would get with the i7 system. I would buy this system if I had a $800 budget for all new components.

Please convince your friend that it is far more cost effective to buy an i5 750 than an i7 920. :)

The i5 Setup above (Mad Pistol) is very nice for an $800 budget.

+1 for the i5 setup

if you can convince him that amd is just as fast as the i5 then we could build something even better

are you not going to need more ram, 6-8gb at least for video editing??
its tough to make a rig where the cpu/mobo is already half your budget

Phenom II x4 and Core i5 are VERY close in most benchmarking tests.
Compared my processor to others in Si Software Sandra and the i5 and PhenomIIx4 were practically dead even. I own the Phenom II x4 945.

As for the Core i7 920 its an enthusiasts processor. It runs off the less common 1366 socket where as the i5 and i7 860 runs on the more mainstreamed 1156 socket.

We talked today, and he's a my Calculus teacher.
He's getting an i5 with 4GB of ram, 1TB HDD, 4650 and 400W Corsair.
He doesn't need a beastly GPU or a 650/700W PSU. The 4650 is just fine for video editing (not rendering).
