Things that I don't like about the above system: weak video card, not enough RAM, motherboard is questionable (I wouldn't buy it, but its within budget), and there are better PSU's (see Corsair).
I would not buy this system if I had $800 to spend on new components.
Now I'm going to put together an i5 system that is comparable to this system but costs less and performs better.

That system will rock his world. He's not getting an i7, but the i5, which is nearly as fast at stock (is as fast when overclocked) is about $90 cheaper, and the components you buy with it are much cheaper and still high quality. The power supply is better, the motherboard is leaps and bounds better, you get more and higher quality RAM, and the video card is far superior to what he would get with the i7 system.
I would buy this system if I had a $800 budget for all new components.
Please convince your friend that it is far more cost effective to buy an i5 750 than an i7 920.
