Ok so i have a 1TB hdd external and i have all my music and movies and what not on it, well i decided back when i was running vista that i would set it up so every one in the house could use it also such as for school and what not, well i upgraded both my PC's to 7 and now no one can access it ive tried creating a new one but when ever i go (or any one) goes to connect to it to listen to music it says "*computer name* not assessable" or something like that, how can i get this back up and running.

did you change the network or workgroup on your computers that it's set up too?

Or make sure the hdd network ip didn't change, give a little insight on its original setup

trying accessing it via its IP in a file browser

log into your router and you should be able to pull up a client table (clients that are connected to your router), figure out which name doesn't belong, take that IP address.

Go into Windows Explorer and on top type

\\<ip address>

Make sure your sharing the hard drive, then make sure everyone is in your netgroup or whatever its called.

OK.

In Windows 7, ONE person has to create something called a "Homegroup".
The others join it with the password it gives you.

Not everyone can have a Homegroup otherwise what's the point?

Also, for this, it's a lot easier just to right click the drive > Properties > Sharing > Click the "I understand sharing without the assistant takes risk" thing > Share all of whatever. For instance, since I share about 2 TB's worth of stuff I share my "D" drive instead of doing the HomeGroup.

i just access the file share via IP than map it to a letter, i find that much simpler than messing with homegroups.

see i tried both ways, the local drive never showed up or win i did get it to it said access denied on the computer i created it on D: and when i did it with a home group my wireless computer wasnt able to connect to it b/c it said it wasnt IPv6 enabled while all my others are D:
