Title: Cross of Iron
Year: 1977
Country of Origin: UK/Germany
Director: Sam Peckinpah
Story: A Tale of a German soldier on the Russian front in WWII
Review: Sam Peckinpah had a harsh and depressing life, he was consumed by alcohol and drugs as a result his talent was severely hindered. He has directed some amazing and controversial films like The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs, but near the end of his career he started to direct some real crap...mostly to sustain his Cocaine addiction. Cross of Iron is his last great film and shows precisely what we lost when he died seven years later.
The film tells the story of a German soldier, not a Nazi, on the Russian from of WWII, who is battling for his life in a now unwinnable war. To make things worse, his new commanding officer is a cowardly Persian aristocrat who came to the Russian just to get the Iron Cross. It's directed in the standard Peckinpah style, which liberally uses slow motion and ultra-violence as an exclamation mark to the point he is trying to make. Touching, violent and profound this film is a forgotten classic.
