Title: Evil Dead II
Year: 1987
Country of Origin: US
Director: Sam Raimi

Story: Groovy

Review: In this sequel...yes I said sequel not remake. Go ahead, argue with me. Anyway this is one of the greatest sequel of all time, belongs in the Parthenon of God Father: Part 2 or Aliens. Incredibly imaginative and fast moving this is a one of a kind masterpiece. Go out and rent it or buy it...just see it.

Groundhog_Day_%28movie_poster%29.jpg

Title: Groundhog Day
Year: 1993
Country of Origin: US
Director: Harold Ramis

Story: A tale of a man trapped in his own personal hell. That hell being Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

Review: A comedic tale of a man, Bill Murry, stuck living Groundhogs Day over and over and over again for no apparent reason. Murry is the only one aware that time has looped. I love the set up for this film, particularly because there isn't any reason for Murry to live this day over and over again. He didn't anger a witch or a gypsy, it's like one day god decided to punish his prick of a character. Nor is it ever explained what he needs to do to get out of this loop...he is just stuck on a day that he hates in a town that he hates even more. Murry is perfect for role and Andie MacDowell is great as the love interest. Definitely one of the smartest rom-coms out there and one Ramis' best films.

Well in honor of the 300th post.

Title: 300
Year: 2007
Country of Origin: US
Director: Zack Snyder

Story: THIS! IS! SPARTA!!!!!

Review: With the intellectual depth of my coffee cup, 300 is a big dumb epic. It is a fictional take of the famous Battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartans (+ 1100 others) held off anywhere from 70,000 to 300,000 Persian soldiers. This film got a lot of flack for supposedly being pro-fascism or pro-right wing, but frankly the film simply isn't smart enough or has enough depth to jump to those conclusions. What we are dealing with is a bloody as hell, visually appealing action film and that is pretty much all it is.

Title: Cross of Iron
Year: 1977
Country of Origin: UK/Germany
Director: Sam Peckinpah

Story: A Tale of a German soldier on the Russian front in WWII

Review: Sam Peckinpah had a harsh and depressing life, he was consumed by alcohol and drugs as a result his talent was severely hindered. He has directed some amazing and controversial films like The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs, but near the end of his career he started to direct some real crap...mostly to sustain his Cocaine addiction. Cross of Iron is his last great film and shows precisely what we lost when he died seven years later.

The film tells the story of a German soldier, not a Nazi, on the Russian from of WWII, who is battling for his life in a now unwinnable war. To make things worse, his new commanding officer is a cowardly Prussian aristocrat who came to the Russian just to get the Iron Cross. It's directed in the standard Peckinpah style, which liberally uses slow motion and ultra-violence as an exclamation mark to the point he is trying to make. Touching, violent and profound this film is an unforgotten classic.

Title: All Quiet on the Western Front
Year: 1930
Country of Origin: US
Director: Lewis Milestone

Story: Not all is quiet on the Western Front.

Review: This film manages to nail the wholly depressing tone of Erich Maria Remarque novel. The plot paints a painful picture of the horrors of war and the terrible conditions that found were found in the trenches. It's well shot and well acted, though I do recommend that you read the book first.

Panchovillamovie2003.jpg

Title: And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself
Year: 2003
Country of Origin: US
Director: Bruce Beresford

Story: A movie about a movie.

Review: A well done movie about the making of a now lost film called The Life of General Villa, which was shot in 1914. The film follows an American filmmaker who is chosen to shoot a film about Pancho Villa during the height of the Mexican Revolution. It's an interesting take on what is basically a footnote in history.
