Avatar was so amazing, amazingly bad! It was so bad. Like... all of the names were mispronounced, they left out Suki, Jet, Jong Jong, Master Paku, Iroh wasn't funny, Ozai played a too-prominent role, and was not dark and foreboding, they left out Roku as well, the entire crescent island part wasn't in, so Roku's advice was played through a 'dragon spirit' which everyone can assume is Fang, Appa and Momo looks like douchebags, and lacked any significant scene. Zuko's blue spirit mask was completely laughable, it had a wild hair-do coming out the back. They missed a lot of key character development, all of the characters were just 'meh.' The movie was 1 hr 50 min, they could not fit that much info in. Oh yeah, Monk Gyatso was black.
Jong Jong was the master Firebender who was nicknamed the Deserter, because he left the Fire Nation army. Aang initially goes to train with him but when Aang finally conjures fire, he burns Katara and vows to never Firebend again. None of this happens in the movie. Jong Jong also appears in season 3 as part of the Order of the White Lotus, along with Boomi (Who was also missing from the movie and plays a vital role in the second season, telling Aang what to look for in an Earthbending teacher), Paku (Who doesn't even get named in the movie, and in the show initially denies teaching Katara, because in the Northern Water Tribe, all of the female benders go into the healing arts. It is also revealed by Paku that he was engaged to Gran-Gran (Katara and Sokka's Grandmother) and in the 3rd season it is revealed that he does end up marrying her) , Master Piandao (Who better show up in the third movie, if there is one), and Iroh.
Both Jet and Suki play pretty major roles later on. Jet is the one who becomes brainwashed in Lake Laogai, and eventually reveals to Aang where Appa after they snap him out of his trance, Jet then dies... Then Appa bites Long Feng, which is how they prove he is a bad dude. Suki is Sokka's GF throughout the entire Book 2 after "The Serpents Pass," and she is also the one who fuels the escape of the Boiling Rock, by taking the Warden hostage. Finally, without Suki, Sokka and Toph would have died...
The reason Roku is such an important character is because in the third season, Zuko learns about his great-grandfathers, Firelord Sozin AND Avatar Roku, when he discovers the conflict between his great-grandfathers, he accepts the struggle between good and evil in himself and join 'Team Avatar' and agrees to teach Aang Firebending.
The only redeemable character in the entire movie was Iroh, who, if you looked closely, had a White-Lotus emblem on his armor, on the top right. Also the fact that he was the only one to conjure fire from nothing (Because Shamamamamlala decided Firebenders needed a source of fire), because in the final season (and hopefully the last movie) it is revealed he learned the true secrets of Firebending from the dragons, the ones he claims to have slain to protect their existence, and to ensure Zuko would be able to learn to Firebend after loosing his anger.
Some things that were not canon as well. Commander Zhao was promoted to Admiral in "The Blue Spirit," but in the end they still refer to him as Commander. Zhao also talks to Iroh about his siege of Ba Sing Se, saying it lasted 100 days, when in canon it was a 600 day siege. Finally the comet that will make Ozai rule the world (Sozin's Comet) is stated in the move to come in 3 years, not the 'next summer' of the TV show. Also, Aang never directly learns about the Comet, remember "Winter Solstice Pt. 2"? Yeah, never happens.
I can expect this movie to follow in the vein of the Golden Compass and Eragon and there will be no sequel.
