cp_alphabase test map

I like this, DragonHill. I like your lighting in the first image, it gives a real "arena" sort of feel to it.

Looks really cool looking just from the pictures. Will we have a server running this map?

I'm going to be perfectly honest: I love the look with all the orange.

Looks neat. Is this the same as Reactor? Is Reactor still around? Or a separate project?

reactor is still on the shelf, has not gone anywhere yet.

as for the "orange" look. i never really gave it much thought.

but you really have to PLAY it first. i'm hoping the game play gets your attention.
the still screen shots say nothing about whats going on

i sent a pm to scrappydoo. hopefully it will be up soon on the events server?

Looks nice, possible play test on one of the eGO servers? Maybe PL maps since next to no one is ever on it.

Looks pretty cool, we should just have a server called "Dragons maps" :P

Has a strong feel from the original Halo maps...I like the images

I gave a little look around it. Kind of mixed feelings.

Already after like a minute (basically my trek from spawn area to middle) and... It's huge. And empty. It's not even funny how big it is, or more like how long it takes you to go anywhere without the help of teleporters. Sure, the middle area is nice and big for possible epic battles. That is unless there half a dozen snipers wont get you before that. Not even the blast screens will help you against them all.

Like already mentioned, there's some fancy innovations there, like the blast screens. I like those, as well as the couple tracks there that help you get back from the sewer to middle. And the sentries, although it sucks that you can't go whack them to reload them.

Well... Yeah. I guess the only real bad thing I can say now is that the whole middle area is too big, as well as your walk there. As you're probably visioned, the most battles will be done on the last point and in the room before it. Or mainly engies camping there in the awesome spots.

Hope it does work nicely with people on it.

EDIT: Also, nice skybox you have hidden there under the map. Lol.

Looks like a great map for casual gamers like me *Im attracted to simple, small, untextured maps* XD

Well, I like what I see in concept. It seems as though this map combats at least a few of the things that blackmesa gets criticized for. I see fewer opportunities for camping, and I see more usefulness for rocket jumping and sticky jumping.

On that note, I thought I would point out that the catwalk that is over top of the central point is quite difficult to rocket jump to; the only way to do it, from what I tested, was to get next to it, and maintain a crouch all the way to the top. What this does is make it a very priviledged spot; it makes it valuable high ground for any soldier who actually knows how to do a full rocket jump; that said, it isn't all that accessible to the average player.

My suggestion to fix that would be to do like the catwalk that leads to the point around A on mesa; have 2 small staircases on either side that go down, and lower the catwalk slightly. Not much, but maybe just enough to allow soldiers to not have to crouch at the top of their jump to get on.

Another thing; the whole upper level, I feel, isn't going to be used well. I think that because of lack of access points in the middle, it's going to be very low traffic; that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it should be noted, anyhow. I say that because once you're in the middle, from my exploration, there's no way to get up unless you're a solider or a demoman; you have to go there from spawn.

Speaking of spawn, I think you need to lose the auto-sentry. I see you've tried to deal with another of mesa's criticisms there, but I don't think it's needed. You have a sniping tower above, and you have a relatively open upper level; It will be possible to camp the 2 ground levels doors without too much pain, but camping all of the spawn exits? no way. I feel like the sentry just cheapens the map, really... makes it a little less professional, in my eyes.

Oh, and the last thing; the barriers. It's an interesting concept, but I think that it isn't going to be used very intelligently; I think it's going to be accidentally triggered in combat all over the place. The pads are right where a lot of the action is going to be, and granted, while that DOES make sense, I think people are going to be activating them without knowing what's going on.

That's my preliminary commentary; remember it's just that. I haven't actually seen the map in play yet, so I don't know how a lot of these elements are actually going to work. This is all speculation; take it with a grain of salt.

actually.. every one can get there..you just did not explore the map fully

it's faster to sticky jump..thats all

as for the rest,,,it is a new concept,,that was the idea

looks like we may need to test this on a non-ego server

gonna see what i can organize

I take that as a challenge, now I will find as many ways to RJ up there as possible. :P

Nice map so far! Looks great :D

I was wondering though how did you get those perfect awesome curves in the 4th picture? They look sweet, I've never seen anything like it!

Alright, I've found 3 ways to RJ up there besides the one described so far. Will post Screenies on howto when I get home today :)

Oh, and the shields are annoying :P, I was speed Rocket Jumping along multiple times and ended up smacking my face into them because I was going too fast.

Spawn sentry running out of ammo, heh :)

But yeah, I like the overall concept of the map, and style.
This will be interesting.

And yeah, as kevi mentioned, you can get up there very easily as both demo and soldier :)
EDIT:
I agree on the 'all other classes thing' but to be fair, I made it by a good bit, without crouching.
Anyone who attended one of my events once wou....

*ahem* I mean, ever tried rocketjumping will probably succeed.

you can get up on the catwalk as any class, yes, but it takes a long time because you have to walk all the way around. Soldiers and demos will clearly use it as an advantage point over most other classes; it'll be rare that heavies will be there, for instance. Or at least, that's my thought. And yes, you can RJ and sticky jump up there no problem, but for rocket jumping, it's the max height you can get to from just a ground jump; players who haven't really mastered RJing will have more trouble than the rest.

I'm just suggesting that yes, while it IS accessible, it could be MORE accessible.
