Wait what?: Yeah, I've always been a little indecisive when it came to counting down the top "X" of "Y" and horror movies are no different. I love all the Evil Deads and Drag me to hell and they all deserve to be watched...even Army of Darkness, which is technically not a horror. So I guess I'd like to say, on behalf of anyone who considers themselves a fan of horror, thank you Mr. Raimi.

5: The Fly

fly_1986_01.jpg

Why? Having David Cronenberg direct a remake of the 1958 classic is a stroke of pure genius. For it's pretty much only direct who would be willing to take a concept like the Fly as far as this film went is none other than David Cronenberg. Oh, and it's easily one of his best film too.

4: Cure

vlcsnap-2010-07-09-15h02m42s78.jpg

Why? I have a confession to make. I left my house and went to class with five movies in my head that I was going to put down on this list. While in class I decided to switch out some films, and add some others. When I came home I only had four films in my head. For the life of me I can't remember what that remember what that fifth film was. So here is Cure, a film type of horror film that I love, but everyone else hates. Its not a scary film, but a hunting one that dredges the depths of human consciousness. The director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, takes his time in letting the story unfold. It's not a film that I would recommend to everyone, but I believe there is small group out there that would appreciate this one.

3: The Thing

Why? The Thing is just one of those movies that has a perfect set up. A team of Americans researchers are stuck in the Arctic with a shape shifting alien. They can't run and they have no idea whose human or not. Carpenter does a spectacular job with the premise of the film and the make up and effects are amazing. Definitely on of the best horror movies out there.

2: The Shining

Why? I want you to listen to piece of music. It's entitled De Natura Sonoris No. 1 and was composed by Krzysztof Penderecki.

Kubrick loves to use two composers in the making of his films, Pendereski and Gy?rgy Ligeti. He uses both in this movie and their pieces set the tone quite nicely. They paint a deeply troubling image that has the power to put you on edge. Like the score, Kubrick does this with his camera. He manages to put the audience on edge by framing his film in large brightly lit areas...actually I could write on this film for freaken ever. Lets just leave it at you should see this movie.

1: Alien

Why? Alien is easily the best constructed Horror film of all time. From start to end the film is nearly faultless. Nothing more needs to be said.

Oh and a few honorable mentions...or as I like to call it; if this list was 25 instead of it.

Scream
Psycho
Silence of the Lambs
Jaws
Jacobs Ladder
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Eraserhead
Let the Right One In
Splinter
Misery

Also, there are still a whole bunch of horror films that I still need to watch. So if your favorite didn't make either list...it's probably because I haven't seen it...or it sucks.

Drag Me To Hell?

I heard that movie was mediocre at best, so I didn't see it. This coming from a Raimi fanboy.

There are some people who like Drag Me to Hell and others who didn't like it. I don't understand the latter. The film is basically a combination of the ridiculously silly cheese of Army of Darkness and the horror/slap-shtick of Evil Dead II. It's a film that found really entertaining, one that threw out just as many laughs as it did scares. Not to mention, it's a well made film and well put together.

I mean, if you've seen and liked Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II...you should really give Drag Me to Hell a shot.

lol, I love that trailer. Yeah, The Shining isn't scary, but it's unsettling in a way that no other horror film manages to pull off. From seemingly never ending hallways to the odd score to the several wtf moments, The Shining has a way to put the viewer on edge.

I liked the Sixth Sense and I probably would have dropped it on the honorable mention list if I had thought about it yesterday.

Damn straight.

You haven't gotten around to formally reviewing all of these in "the thread."

No SAW love? xD

Saw's a pretty boring and lame series.

Pretty dumb if you ask me, and its not appealing. Maybe its just my opinion

but I dont like watching one thing and one thing only..

People torturing people. Thats basically the whole movie. No vengeance at all :P

Good list, and the best part is I have yet to see any of the movies. Not even on the honorable mention list... It's not that I don't watch horror movies, I just don't watch older ones
