Hello guys,

I've been a bit busy lately with RL but i'm looking for people who would be interested in making a UDK indie game (free) with me. This would not be an eGO endorsed project but it still would be fun to be able to work with people from the community !

I can do maps and I can do "ok" concept art (i'm not a very skilled concept artist but I practice).

The game

The game is a Sci-FI / Horror shooter set in space that will bring a exciting and thrilling experience to the player (of course more infos on that later once we have a team or once we have enough key elements to start working). The creation of the game will be undertaken in stages, the first will be to create a fully playable level to try out the concept itself and build up from that.

Why the UDK (Unreal Engine)

The Unreal Engine provides cutting edge technology, continuously upgraded by Epic Games, an optimized engine that can run on a large range of computers, with an exclusive set of powerful tools. The UDK allows for a free use of this technology.
The engine itself allows a large range of effects, from post processing effects to scripted events, great graphics, efficient map making and programming as well as a great integration with various industry tools. More infos on the UDK and the Unreal Engine at Udk.com .

What I'm looking for

Any number of the following the better and the merryer so don't hesitate to apply. Yes apply, even though I myself am not a professionnal and even though I'm willing to take people who are not professionnals, a minimum skill set is still very important. If you want to apply but don't have any skill that could help contribute then it won't really help us unfortunately.

- 3D Modeler(s) : You will have to be able to import to the UDK your creations, so you need a 3D modeling tool that allows that.

- Unreal Engine / Unreal Script Programmer(s): Nothing special here, you need at least a good knowledge of this language, since this is going to be the core of the project. Remember this is a not a mod, it's a full game.

- 3D Animator(s) : Since this will be a game we will have to animate ourselves the characters, either using mo-cap databases or hand made animations.

- 2D Concept Artist(s) : You will have to create concept art to convey the ideas of the team so that it can work from that and bring it into the digital world. Even though everyone's ideas are welcomed, it will be really your role to bring the world to life on paper / digitally before the modeling and mapping.

- Sound Artist(s) : Reponsible for all the sound in the game. Even though the visual aspect is important, sound is a crucial element to a game or movie and therefore it has to be handled with a lot of attention to really create a unique and interesting environement. For this you need the basic knowledge but also good hardware, using your webcam monitor to record gun shots might not work ^^.

- Music / Score artist(s) : Same as for the sound, original and unique music helps create a interesting atmosphere.

"Woah that's a lot of people and it's gonna be a lot of work, I don't know if I'll have the time for this :("

Instead of tackling the project on it's full right away we will first make one level that can be a stand alone "mini game" on it's own. This way we won't get scared or anything by the size of the project and most of all, we will be able to test quickly our concept, ideas and see how it works once released. If it has success then we will build from that.

Also this will be done over the internet through skype, ventrilo etc for meetings. You won't have to "work" for specific hours and can still have a life on the side, even though the goal is to still be pretty efficient. It's unpaid of course since the game will be free of charge (like a mod).

Don't hesitate if you have questions to post them here or PM me ! See you soon !

Sounds great, unluckerly I cant do any of those things, so I guess ill just wait for you to release it, be sure to post it on the forums!

I'm a modeller who has put a couple of skins into the source engine but I don't know about UDK.
Also does it have to be free? Just asking.

Well if you can create models it's all a matter of using the right plugin to get it into the UDK. Thanks for the support guys !

Well I can't really do those things, but keep us updated on the game!

I haven't done much scripting with UDK, but I'd be willing to give it a shot. I also have a friend who does 3D modeling who is familiar with UDK.

As far as the scripting goes, just PM me what you need and I'll see if I can scratch it together.

What do you know about the Unreal Script exactly please ? This would require a lot of programming work but essentially building the AI at first, as well as a menu for the game.

I've never worked with UDK at any depth, so I'm almost completely unfamiliar with it. That said, I'm not too scared of a learning curve.

I'm familiar with C#, C++, Objective-C and Java, so there really shouldn't be any surprises. I've also done some really basic AI work with MMO bots in the past.

This is the only source code I have left. I lost most of my scripts/code with my laptop. Spelling mistakes resulted mostly from the fact that I wrote that in 21 hours, in a single day.

I also don't have a Windows machine at the moment. I keep forgetting that. Might be kinda tough to write code for UDK without being able to actually access it =/.

I think you should be able to access it on a linux OS like ubuntu, are you on linux or mac os ?

Like Pvtsnowball, I've never worked with UDK. But I don't see it being to difficult.

My qualifications? An undergrad in computer science, a masters in software engineering, and 15+ years as a full time software developer.

My question, is how much time would you expect?

i could try to go for the music or sound. can't make anything my self tough. But feel free to pm me if u want me and i'll do my best and try to do what u want.

Awesome experience indeed, I guess with that UDK is going to be easy to learn if you are interested in learning while participating in the project. As to your question about how much time I can't really say right now since I'm still assembling the team and it will depend on the size of it. However the first goal is to make one deep, interesting, original game level with a UI for the game in game and menus. This would be the test run for the concept and the team so it will take less time than going straight at a 20hours game for exemple.

Id be will to do some music for this project.

Alright cool, do you guys have some previous work I could listen to ?

However Slayer I'm afraid I didn't understand what you said or maybe u did a typo? You would want to contribute to the music and sounds but you can't do any yourself?

Too Much for me to read

..sounds (and looks) like somebody is trying to drive up their post count.

yah, i'd try. Let me check out this engine. Might be able to help with that. Well i'll try. :)

hmmm, i'll get into this more further when my exams are ofter (20th december i have my last :D)

Hey guys just a quick update, we still need one modeler and one concept artists (anyone that enjoys drawing and has a decent level of drawing).

Also the project will really start once we have that and probably after the holidays since right now a lot of people are with family / and going through exams etc.
