Change my Processor?? or what :D

Sup everyone!! I have a question regarding my processor

first of all, my specs:

AMD Athlon II X2 245 2.90Ghz
4gb RAM
HDD 230
Video card: ATI Radeon 4550 512MB
Windows 7 Ultimate- 32 bits
2Mb/sec ISP (Mexico) PIN average 30-60
Optic Mouse, full keyboard, 1440x990 19'' LG Flatron screen LCD

I bought this gear about a year ago when, according to my sales representative at the tech store where I acquired the components, the double nucleus processor where the hot potato those days.

Nowadays playing Call of Duty: Black Ops and other recent games, I come with the situation that the performance is definitively not the same as it was before. I am aware that the technology grows exponentially, that is why I am wondering if there is a better processor I should acquire (triple nucleus or whatever, lol).


So, my questions would be:

a) Is my processor a good choice for great quality/performance gaming experience??

b) Should I migrate to another recent kind of processor?
b.1) Which one would you suggest and why?
b.2) Would I have any kind of complications regarding the other components?

c) Recently I have seen that most Steam games require or suggest Intel Core i7 processors (or something like that). Is that the new technology today?

If anything, upgrade your video card first.

Athlon 2's are still relatively new, and perform great for the price. It all depends on when, and how much you're willing to spend.
 
Lawls you still have that thing on 2.9Ghz?,You can overclocking the cpu could makes things some what better but thats up to you and yes you should upgrade your video card.

He can't overclock. It's a pre-built system. AKA, crap motherboard.
 
I like how core translates to nucleus.


back on topic, you should be able to upgrade to an Athlon II X4, or Phenom II.

that would give you a significant performance increase
 
i have that same cpu and a 4850 and 3 gigs of ram and i play crysis at around 60fps i would say get a better video card for sure

Mexico isn't a 3rd world country, and hasn't been for a long time. But, this isn't the place to discuss that.

You probably misinterpreted what we (or I) said. We are trying to help you. Angeal mentioned overclocking, and I responded in saying that you can't physically overclock on your motherboard, because it's in a pre-built system. It's my opinion that they're 'crap' motherboards, because they offer very little features compared to buying a stand-alone one. I used to have one that is probably worse, and I'm not bashing you for that. I was actually going to recommend a few motherboards that you could upgrade too, because after all, isn't that why you made this thread?

I think both of you are misinterpreting him.
I think it was Steel. 'I have that CPU, a differnet GPU and 3GB of ram and can play Crysis at 60fps', which I'll call bullocks on. Unless you're playing at medium settings @ 1024x768.
 
i am playing it at those settings and i wasnt meaning anything by that i was just stateing the cpu is not bad im sorry if i worded it poorly

No, no problem. Its just a misinterpreted other comments (neither Shadow's was offensive) that I felt as somehow disrespectful. I considered them as making fun of my difficulty to buy expensive equipment.

Well, we need to know your budget first. An Athlon II X2 only uses L2 Cache compared to a L3 cache which is much faster. Your processor might bottlecap newer cards but not the HD4550. If you have the money, I would suggest you upgrade your processor to a Phenom II x4 or somewhat close, An AM3 Compatible motherboard (Trusted brands- ASUS,MSI,GIGABYTE) then onto your graphics card (I'm having an issue with my GT 240 atm so I don't have an opnion on that) You can upgrade a 5670, big bang for your buck, Faster than the GT 240 and priced at about a GT 240. Um, if you do upgrade your mobo, you might need to upgrade your RAM to, be sure to check out the specs.

Gddr5 is better than Gddr3 in some ways. just be sure to monitor the requirements each and every component requires. trying to fit a AM3 Proc Chip into a AM2+ will not work.
 
I think the best upgrade you could make would be your Video card. Many games these days still do not need more than 2 cores so you would get a good performance boost from a new Video card.

However, you do mention Black Ops and the requirements for that game are 3 cores... if you were looking to upgrade your processor, it may require upgrades to the motherboard and, possibly, the ram as well (as Episoco says above).

I would suggest upgrading to a 4 core processor (AMD PhII X4, or an intel i5/i7) becuase they will allow for good performance. If you decide to go this direction, let us know and we can assist in helping you pick other components.
 
If he just bought that computer last year and is running an Athlon II, then I would suspect he's already got DDR3 RAM. Since the motherboard would already have to be AM3, and quality mobos really only affect OC'ing, I wouldn't think he'd have to replace it. As long as he got another AM3 processor it should all be compatible. What I'd be worried about is substantially upgrading CPU+GPU may pull too much on the power supply. It sounds like he has a pre-built machine which means the PSU won't be anything special and might even be built in to the case.

Ok so reading all your great comments, I assume the closest option to my budget (which is, i dunno maybe $200 USD tops tops tops), I should get an AMD Phenomenon II x4 processor.

Changing that specific part, would force me to change another one? Here in my country is way cheaper to buy the parts and assemble them instead of buying a full gear. Therefore, should I consider in my budget that I will have to buy something else?

You should focus more on getting a better graphics card, as your processor is just fine for gaming.
If your budget is ~$200 USD, I'd recommend a 5770/6850/460/450. One of those. Whichever you want/prefer.
