Story: There isn't one to speak of...well there is but nobody went to this movie for its' story.
Review: There is nothing that reminds me of the futility of reviewing films more than the second Transformers movie. It was an absolutely terrible film, like easily one of the worst big budget films ever, but people still applauded it when the credits rolled. I've never really understood the whole clapping at the end of movies thing, that really only works at a live performance...and its usually reserved for a good performance and not something like Transformers 2. So I was not surprised when people started clapping at the end of the third film, what gets me though is that I don't see this phenomenon outside of the Transformers movies. It is almost like this is the best thing that these people have seen and that's the most disconcerting part about the whole thing.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is that it doesn't matter whether or not I liked the new Transformers movie. I could go into a lengthy breakdown of the film's failings; the pointless plot, how the characters are written and used, the plot holes, the sloppy direction in the action scenes, and most of all how boring this film is for most its' running time. None of that matters since most people will like this film despite these massive faults. Many people will forgive this film because it is suppose to be a big dumb action film. Which is fine, since I'm all for big dumb action films and I've stood by Michael Bay in the past because his past films are big dumb action films. Transformers: Dark of the Moon is something different though because it is no where near a quality action movie, in fact during large tracts of the film it is a very boring film.
Lets take Armageddon for example. Armageddon is not a good movie, but it is entertaining throughout and every character is recognizable. Transformers: Dark of the Moon is also not a good movie, but its' dull and maybe 10% of the characters are recognizable. There are many characters in T
otM that are introduced and then we never hear from them again or they just up and die without giving us a reason to care about them. In Armageddon we spend the whole movie with the cast and we get to know them, so when they die we are given a reason to care. What I'm trying to say is that the hyped action sequence in the last 40 minutes of TotM carries little in the way of dramatic weight...as in the action is pointless. Still, I have no idea why I'm saying this. Chances are you're going to see this movie and like it. At least it's better than the last one, the racist robots are gone and they finally axed Megan Fox and even the 3D was good. So if you're looking for pointless action, a two and a half hour run time, poor attempts at humor, and a little T&A from Fox's replacement...then this movie is for you. If you're like me and demand the bare essentials from your big dumb action films, then skip this one.[4/10]
