Valve's Counter-Strike is, remarkably, still a sizable presence in the world of eSports. The decade-plus old Half-Life mod-turned-full release has been showing its age for a long time though, which is why it's no surprise to hear a rumor today that Valve is (finally) putting together some kind of follow-up, said to be called Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
To be fair, it's not clear if this Global Offensive is an update to the original game or something entirely new. Valve has reportedly been bringing people from the eSports world into the office to help test its latest efforts on the Counter-Strike front, ESEA News reports. While the details may or may not be accurate, the existence of something Counter-Strike-related called Global Offensive was all but confirmed by Valve's Jess Cliff, one of the game's original creators, on the Steam forums.
The word is that a release is planned for Q1 2012, with Global Offensive reportedly running on an updated version of the Source engine. Other features mentioned include: focus on 5v5 play, new guns and grenades, free ammo, Dust and Aztec map updates, and rankings for both individuals and teams. An official announcement is expected to arrive today, so stay tuned (hopefully) for more.
