Valve's Counter-Strike is, remarkably, still a sizable presence in the world of eSports. The decade-plus old Half-Life mod-turned-full release has been showing its age for a long time though, which is why it's no surprise to hear a rumor today that Valve is (finally) putting together some kind of follow-up, said to be called Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

To be fair, it's not clear if this Global Offensive is an update to the original game or something entirely new. Valve has reportedly been bringing people from the eSports world into the office to help test its latest efforts on the Counter-Strike front, ESEA News reports. While the details may or may not be accurate, the existence of something Counter-Strike-related called Global Offensive was all but confirmed by Valve's Jess Cliff, one of the game's original creators, on the Steam forums.

The word is that a release is planned for Q1 2012, with Global Offensive reportedly running on an updated version of the Source engine. Other features mentioned include: focus on 5v5 play, new guns and grenades, free ammo, Dust and Aztec map updates, and rankings for both individuals and teams. An official announcement is expected to arrive today, so stay tuned (hopefully) for more.

I heard its rumored that you can control dogs?

We have a Counter Strike: Source division for this and a section in the forums for this. Why not post it there?

Because this is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, not Counter-Strike: Source. Got em

Nothing wrong with this thread existing in both places. Many members don't visit the CS:S forums. Everyone should be contributing to the thread, not whining about trolling

If only Day of Defeat would get this kind of love or any attention. Enough of hat fortress 2!!

Well now people who are interested have two threads to keep up with instead of one. Just seems senseless, but whatever :P

It's not broken, so stop trying to fix it. It was searched and the other thread wasn't found. Please stop acting like this is a huge inconvenience. its not. someone close this thread.

Woah, chill. I wasn't making that big of a deal.

My apologies Tension, that wasn't necessarily directed toward you. I'm just angry about the fact that people like to instantly post something to draw attention away from the reason why the thread exists. This thread serves no purpose because it was instantly trolled.

I'm getting back on my dinosaur. If you need me, I'll be in the Himalayan Mountains.

May be interesting if they actually do a decent update of the source engine.

And also I hate the term "eSports". It is totally dumb to refer to competitive fps as anything resembling a sport.

Edit:Sorry that may have been a little harsh but I have a couple friends who do competitive fps and refer to it as eSports all the time and try and equate it to being the same as when I played football/basketball/and baseball in high school. It is it's own thing and is fine and good being what it is not trying to be the same.

I find it more of a sport than paper rock scissors. chess is a sport, and womens basketball, why not computer gaming! :) my experience from the tournaments i went to had quite a sport feel to it.
