According to an anonymous report BF3Blog received from inside Valve, the developer/publisher is currently in late-stage talks with EA in bringing Battlefield 3 to the Steam digital distribution service. The rumor says that Battlefield 3 would be available on Steam just in time for the game?s release on October 25.
According to the report, EA and Valve are very close to reaching an agreement regarding sales of DLC content, which is the main reason Battlefield 3 is not on Steam: Valve requires that all DLC is sold through Steam, while EA would prefer to sell via its own channels. This was the cause of another EA title, Crysis 2, for being pulled from Steam earlier this year.
Many PC gamers have lobbied both EA and Valve to put Battlefield 3 on Steam for a while now. It looks like it?ll finally happen soon.
We?ve reached out to EA and Valve for a comment on this story.

Now the question I have for you all who pre-ordered on Origin or other retailers is this:
Would you cancel your Pre-Order if it was announced for Steam? (See Poll)

I'd prefer it, and I haven't yet pre-ordered, but it would be a waste of the Amazon gift card I'll be using to pre-order or buy it later. If EA is smart, they'll make the codes activate-able on Steam if this goes through.

You'd still need to use Origin with BF3, so what's the point?

I wasn't thinking so much Origin here as battlelog. Getting mine from game stop would just be a hassle to cancel and order it again might as well just keep it where i have it.

If it's released on Steam, you won't be forced to use Origin.

Do you know this as a fact or are you just speculating?

They have said that origin is required for this game. I agree that it would make no sense whatsoever to have it on steam and force people to use origin, but as far as I know right now, origin is required, and if thats the case, I wouldnt get it on steam anyways.

If it was an option between the two, sure, I would go for steam, but only because I already have all my other games in it.

Tl;dr, I wouldn't transition to Steam unless exceptions occurred.

If Steam provides discounts and/or better in-game items compared to Origin's offering, then I might. I love steam in honesty, but it isn't harmful to go outside the norm of digital downloading to new territories. I would say EA is doing something right currently, but they will have to offer a lot of services to keep up with Steam and Valve (especially if Episode 3 gets released soon, cough).

Another focus, I personally believe, that gives them props is Battlelog. It is the Facebook of gaming--it sounds bad, but it keeps private information to be kept away from family who would be curious about how much time their brother/cousin/nephew/etc. spent on playing vidya games. It also keeps game partners in closer connections, but it is not perfected. I would prefer a calender that can be displayed publicly to close gamers who wish to schedule clan or partner meetings/play time in-order to encourage interaction.

Personally, Call of Duty killed the social connection in FPS-PC societies by dropping players immediately into matches where ranks, guns, and achievements were the focused goals rather than teamwork related tasks. To challenge, Counter-Strike is one of the best games for vocal interaction. The reason is simply because there are no achievements, ranks or guns to unlock. People are there to have fun and make friends--not to display e-peens. Content is already unlocked and there are countless plugins for people to join and have fun--almost like minigames. Team-Fortress WAS in the same aspect until hats and tool shops came along.

Hopefully BF3 and Battlelog can enhance the teamwork association, but in reality it will only marginally increase.

Origin and Battlelog are required to play BF3, I don't think EA will change that at all.

So with Steam you'll have to use Steam/Origin/Battlelog to play. Battlelog I can get behind, as it does look promising (not so much the server browser portion but the forums/stat tracking side). Origin is just a waste.

Origin is just a download manager, not a connection point to Battlelog since it is it's own entity. Steam just may refer the individual to the website if the person bought BF3 from their company. But maybe you should give Origin some time--it may prove itself to be a worthy competitor against Steam that can benefit the public's wallets and entertainment.

Origin has put me off buying the game completely, but so has Battlelog. It's not awful, it's just new and I find it annoying. If it was released on Steam and the game was handled a little better then I'd perhaps consider it.

Q: Is Origin required to play my game, even if I didn't buy it on Origin?

A: Beginning in September of 2011, most new PC games from EA will benefit from the enhanced features provided by Origin integrated into the games. PC players will be required to log-in to Origin to play new EA games so you are getting the best possible experience with the full set of online features to connect and play with friends, get help when you need it and keep the game updated with the latest content. Whether you purchase the game on Origin.com, from another site for digital downloads, or at retail for physical discs, new games will require you to have the Origin to play. If you didn't buy your game on Origin, Origin will be included in the installer for the game.

When playing games offline, Origin log-in will not be required to play. For older EA catalog games, Origin is not required to play - though we recommend you use the Origin application for fast, seamless downloads, auto-patching and additional social features.

We won't know anything until [possibly] it is released on Steam. I can't see why EA couldn't just make Battlelog work with Steam, and they promised before that Origin was only for installation, and it wouldn't require it for BF3 to be played. >_> O_o

Indeed, it wouldn't require origin in order to play.

I'm not confirming or denying the fact, and it may only be like that in the beta. All I'm saying is that EA promised that Origin would not be required. Will they break their word? It seems so.
