Wonders of the Spy

Agreed; I've been stabbed by Frisky too many times to count on Blackmesa. I find dead ringer spies riduculously hard to kill though, especially as pyro, because you can literally sit there and burn them continuously for about 30 seconds as the dead ringer keeps reviving them somehow! :P

It's not that the spy is reviving constantly, it's just that the spy is still waiting to respawn from that first kill. it just so happens that the spy got caught during the respawn.

I need to go to another server where i don't care about rankings and practice my sKILLS lol.

I hate spies. They are always sapping my sentry :scared:
By the way, how do you use dead ringer? It just doesn't work with me like it does with others :(

I'll show you how to use dead ringer+ethernal reward when I'lll come home honey ;)

tips:

(1) go gas jockery set -> you can always outrun them.

(2) don't bother trying to burn them continuously while they're on DR effect. Just burn them little by little so u can see where they are at.

(3) Burn them like hell when they appear again.

(4) If you've degreaser, use airblast to corner them. Don't panic use them in good interval so you don't waste all you ammo. Once their DR runs our, burn them and taunt.

(5) feel free to shoot with flare when they are in or out of DR affect. flare crits are awesome!

I remember my first time playing the spy... Ahh, the glorious backstabbing days.

mesa is all about how you play i think, especially as a spy. i think reason frisky is so good (and so annoying) other the fact of talent is that he is constantly moving. I play sniper 75% of the time he'll backstab me on A and literally 2 secs after i spawn he'll jump stab me in the vents. There's just to many good players on mesa to just camp one specific area. On the pyros the ones who frequent mesa know to spy check constantly:)

Spying is, in short, awesome, and in long, spectacularly awesome. The trick is to focus on what the opponent is thinking. That's why Spies manage to get straight up Dmg increases (DR&Enforcer for example) because it relies on psychology rather than any specfic stratagy. You can't put a new spy into a formula and have them win all the time, you need situationals, practice and more cunning than a fox who was formerly Professor of Cunning in Harvard Cunning University but has since retired and been appointed Ambassador for Cunning for the UN.

Any tips for a new player: (1)The best load out is actually the default due to it's extreme versatility.
(2): You're only helpful if you're actually killing the enemy, and even then if you manage to get the top 4 classes down (Heavy, Medic, Engineer, Sniper). Play for the team not for kills.
(3): The DR is fun, but don't use it so much that you go weeks without using the IW/CnD. Indeed, make that days if you're using the Saharan Spy set.
(5): The best thing to do is ask yourself "If I were my opponant, where would I expect me to be?" and then go into an opposite direction/area. This helps with the DR too.
(6): Never go spy if more than 2 people are spy on your team already, 3 if it's a big map/if there's a heavy/medic uber you HAVE to stop. Spies have diminishing returns, a single spy can easily do the work of 4 without there being 4 spies in an enemy team being easily found,
(7): Running on from above, a spy is not a helpful class unless you're assassinating high-priority targets. You cannot cap points, defend areas for long or against an assault, any enemies you kill will likely be only a short walk away from their spawn.
(8): A true spy would have noticed I missed (4)
(9): No more hints, while you scrolled up for (4) I backstabbed you, mon amee.
(10): Have a weapon name that references Les Mis?rables. It doesn't help your performance but it'll give a cheap laugh to anyone you kill who gets the reference.

Also, as for anything else?

Lastly, for Mesa, being a spy is best when your team is losing (best if the enemy controls the midpoint or even your secondlast point). Don't go spy if you have one more point to cap to win, unless there's an engy nest/uber in the computer room. Also, pick targets appropriately, and please, don't just camp that little lip up the first ramp in the vents on the right for easy kills.

(2) don't bother trying to burn them continuously while they're on DR effect. Just burn them little by little so u can see where they are at.

Sorry, this is reminding me of an English show, where a small village puts on a nativity play, and the guy playing Herod doesn't want to be seen to be mean so he changes the line: "Find the first born males of the land, and kill them... But kill them gently, as I am a loving King who adores children, and often gives them sweeties and presents..", and then goes to the kids in the audience and hands out candy... Basically, "Put the Spies on fire, but burn them SOFTLY...." :P

I found spy very useful for distracting enemies. Everyone eagers to kill the spy, sniper stops focusing on sniping, engie starts run around with desperate spy check, demo usually stops spamming and starts melee spycheck etc. Real deal is pyro or heavy, they're my priority objects, the others I use to make some confusion.
Also sap the sentry when your team is nearby, or engie gone. When there's engie right at the sentry, and nobody covers you, then you just give away your location.
When reloading CnD/IW, uncloak and ACT like enemy. Best for CnD/IW reload is sniper class, because it stays in one spot, worst is engie and scout. Engie because engie never stops wrenching around, scout because he's incredibly fast, and double jumps a lot. Never stay in one spot for reload. Takes too long and makes you sitting duck. Also use IW/CnD for short trips only. When you come out of spawn, be you, dress as someone else later. Enemy spy can wait right next to your spawn ;) Use CnD realod while cloaked only when neccessary, otherwise use it like faster relaoding IW ;)
Pay attention to enemies. If you're cloaked as one of them, do not decloak. Just run away or kill him discretely. Two same guys next to each other are really obvious.
Run for your prey less then 3 seconds away. That's crucial. Every spy-concerned player (and there is always noob spy before you, who makes them spyranoid) turns around every once a while. If you follow someone for too long (i.e. 10 secs) you become suspect. And simple spy check is immident.
Sometimes you can pass the spy check. If you do (especially when engie hits you with wrench except for Southern Hospitality), stay with him and then make your move.
Ethernal reward is great thing. Until your last backstabbed prey revives. He usually says "Spy as me" and then, you're really doomed.
Always check for sentries around before decloaking with ethernal reward/firing.
Sapperspam is useful when there is only one engie and nobody covers him. Engies really hates this ;)
Sometimes enemy can make even more simple spycheck, most anoyingis "shoot before you come any closer" or sometimes in LAN parties it could be "tell my name when you're closing to me" or "say Yes, No or Medic in voicechat" (it's shown as (VOICE)ThatGuysNick: Yes/No/Medic at the teamchat). This is the ultimate spy-test and only way I pulled through - using ethernal reward and DR, making some mess so they start furious spy checks and then run away. In this case, your team needs to be ready and close. When you do the chaos, where everyone melee spycheck the closest corners, and heavy or two come in the range... well than you have real massacre ;)
If someone ignored you decloaking, run away and change cover. Engies sometimes ignore you to get you in pyro-trap.
Help your spies - shoot at them when they are around enemies. You support their cover (bonus is spycheck).
Be mainstream. Coming opposite way than emeny is really obvious. Great thing is going backwards, from some battle, disguised as someone hurt. I got never spycheck after this. After a while, when healed (your disguised you I mean),runback in battle. Just be your enemy, like fallen angel have written.

MEDIC - never ever ever ever ever heal spy. Only exceptions are when he calls you or setting up (time before round starts). It's the stupidest thing you can do and it kills you both (usually).

Those are my hints, my way. You can take whatever you want, or use something oppose me at the battle. I counted with it when I posted it ;)

Id say the highest priority kill is a medic with an unused uber or kritz, or just medic in general since once you kill him 9 times out of 10 you will get his heavy afterward. Thats just my opinion.

Of course, but it has to be a good medic, and I've met like 3 really good medics in my life ;) when medic sucks and give uber to sniper or focuses only on heavy and nobody else matters (even thoug heavy could be noob and there is a great demo next to medic dying) he does more harm than use... well I bet you know this :D
And he's target no1 for everyone :D

I will say frisky is a damn good spy on Mesa, I have taken the time to spectate him on that map.
He is good.....

He is always moving from health pack to health pack. Just remember on L or C if frisky appears and dead ringers block his way to A that is normally his escape path.

I like playing against frisky when he isn't spy. But he is to babies to play a class locked duel with me. :P

So today in Mesa Frisky was a spy and I was a robot from the future. He stabbed me 0 times and I killed his several times (probably 90%+ were his fake DR deaths though). But then he started to stab my friends nearby me and run away. I switched to Gas Jokery Set, spy checked any suspicious friendlies (a tip: lit any friendly scout that's moving a bit slow...it's Frisky)..caught him on fire...he managed to escape once or twice but at least two times I gave him a slow and painful death - I lit him little by little, followed him and burned him to death. Then I proceeded to taunt. He then switched to Soldier and managed to kill me for the first time :D

Oh and he tried to stair stab me once...ended up badly for him.

My point being Mesa isn't the great place to spy. In any other maps, he probably would be getting much more kills. Mesa is just too easy for spy checking (by any class) and as I said before any 1/2 ass pyro can easily dominate a good spy in mesa. But it's still fun to spy in Mesa tho lol

P.S. I don't claim to be a good pyro. Heak I still suck at airblasting.
