I currently use Frontier Justice, Pistol, and Southern Hospitality.

Any suggestions?

I should take the wrangler instead of the pistol... The wrangle is very handy when somebody is trying to destroy your sentry from a dead angle...

Its situation dependant. I use that same setting most of the time. If I'm playing more aggresive I switch to mini sentry. If I'm playing more defensive then wrangler

I don't believe there is a "best" engineer setup, but these are my setups.
For Defensive: Frontier Justice, Wrangler, Jag
For Offensive: Frontier Justice, Pistol, Gunslinger

troll engie setup:

Widowmaker+Pistol+Eureka

It works like charm.

Yeah , it all depends on the situation if you're playing offense or defense. Do you have time to set up all your structures or are you in a hurry to rush the point?

If I'm setting my self up for a long term defense play i just use my jag/widowmaker/ and wrangler.

If you want to be a battle engie gunsliinger/ frontier justice (because that little sentry is going to get blown up many times)and your preference of pistol or wrangler. It turns into an annoying situation for the other team in no time flat.

I don't play much engy at all (in fact my TF2 stats say I rarely do), but when I do I play normally with a widowmaker/lugermorph/S.Wrench. Or, which Dev stated, F.J./whatever/gunslinger for a more offensive-minded engy.

I really can't touch the wrangler all that much when I use the widowmaker though, not having a reliable source of good ammo can be a horrid pain. 6 'testing' shots for cloaked spies with that widowmaker and you're out of ammo with nothing but a wrench and wrangler to defend yourself with, which also puts a strain on your dispenser's metal supply that could be better used for repairs if/when needed. A lot of people use the pomson nowadays to get around that problem, but 1) I don't have one and 2) it doesn't have the spread like a shotgun does which means more shooting randomly into areas than you'd need with 1 shotty blast.

Like others stated though, there's no real "right" answer however. More or less personal taste. Although people who try to defend a whole base with 1 mini sentry kind of boggle the mind... ;)

Widowmaker. Best thing ever... assuming you can aim. Otherwise it's not good at all. But if you are consistent and can do more than 30 damage per shot, its by far the best choice.

I switch between several combinations of weapons

Shotgun/F.J. (primary)
Pistol/Wrangler/Short Circuit (secondary)
Jag/occasionally Gunslinger (melee)

Though I haven't quite gotten the hang of the Short Circuit yet, it comes in very handy when soldiers and demos are spamming you with death, especially if you're next to a dispenser

Note: the Wrangler can be a nice companion to a mini-sentry, especially if you can aim. (Though if you're like me and you play engie because you can't aim, this may not work for you)

I don't like your setup. :P If you're going to use the Frontier Justice with the Gunslinger, then you better make sure that your sentry gets the kills, not you. My playstyle of Gunslinger Engineer gives me no room for that, so I can't use the Frontier Justice very well with my mini-sentry. I always use my mini-sentry to help me weaken the enemy, then finish em off with my shotgun. Not the other way around.

If there's anything you need to know about making a class loadout, it's that most of the weapons aside from vanilla are extremely situational. If you're not playing vanilla, you're gonna need to know how to use the other weapons, what situation works best with them, and what weapons work best with it.

For example, this is my battle engie setup: Widowmaker, Pistol, Gunslinger

-Widowmaker destroys enemies if you can hit consistently and it gives you 60 metal back on a meatshot, but it chews up your metal. That can be fixed by not using a lot of metal or having a good backup to use when you don't think you can land your shots.

-Pistol makes up for the fact that the Widowmaker uses up metal for ammo, and you can use it if you don't think your shots will hit. You get 212 rounds with the Pistol. Use em. In addition, it does decent damage if you land all your shots and can hit at pretty much any range.

-Gunslinger doesn't use a lot of metal to create buildings. As a battle engineer, you're gonna move around a lot; you're not gonna stick around and upgrade your buildings. You can use the excess metal you have for the Widowmaker.
