Article ITT I attempt to review every movie I've seen.

Hey Sexy Beast, I think theres only 1 movie outta the 50 you posted that really seem interesting to me. You seem to have some kinda craving for drama flicks cause most of these seems to be for women. I cant remember the name of the movie that I noticed that seemed interesting, but ill go look for it again.

I hate odd numbers...
Just caught Rampart... A movie I find hard to rate. I liked it but also disliked it if that was possible.

I found the acting for the most part was on pair and kept me engaging. But the story...
I guess what I'm saying is that it was a story with no start or end... Just one really long middle.

Was wondering if you ever caught it?

Haven't seen it, but I'll have to check it out.

You should review Atonement.

Never got around to seeing that one. I'll

I'm pretty sure the only movie in the last 50 that I reviewed that targeted a specifically female audience was Easy A...and possible Submarine.

Did you check out:

Altered States
Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
The Cabin in the Woods
The Raid: Redemption
Network
A Scanner Darkly
The Ipcress File
Brick
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Enter the Void

None of these are chick films; their either action, horror, spy/noir, cynical black comedies, or introspective head trips...and they're all great in their own right.

Title: Gandhi
Year: 1982
Country of Origin: India/UK
Director: Richard Attenborough

Plot: The title sort of explains it all.

Review: Gandhi is a sweeping epic charting the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi from his days in South Africa all the way into the Partitan of India and its civil war. Ben Kingsley is absolutely brilliant in the role of Gandhi and more importantly he is completely believable. Actually...come to think of it, everyone does a great job in their roles. Richard Attenborough does a fantastic job directing this one, there are some very big epic scenes in this film and he handles them like a champ. The whole production is top notch and what ever complaints I have feel minor in comparison to the finished product. If you haven't seen Gandhi yet, then you should do yourself a favor and watch this film.

ShadowoftheVampireposter.jpg

Title: Shadow of the Vampire
Year: 2000
Country of Origin: UK/US
Director: E. Elias Merhige

Plot: During the filming of the 1922 German silent film Nosferatu, the films director Frederich Wilhelm Murnau surprises everyone when he casts an unknown actor, Max Schreck, as Count Orlok. An actor who just might be a little too right for the role.

Review: This is Merhige's first film since he directed Begotten back in 1991, so needless to say I was weary about this one. Thankfully, Shadow of the Vampire is a relatively conventional film...especially when compared with Begotten. Its also a very entertaining film, it manages to mix just the right amount of drama and odd humor to make it all mix perfectly. Willem Dafoe is spot on amazing in his role as Max Schreck/Count Orlok and it is easily one of the best performances in his career. John Malkovich is great as the self-centered and ego driven director Murnau. I actually watched Nosferatu before watching this one, simple because this film felt like a behind the scenes for Nosferatu...which is a pretty dull film to watch. Anyway, give this one a shot. It is an odd little film, but one that is entertaining none the less.

Title: POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
Year: 2011
Country of Origin: US
Director: Morgan Spurlock

Plot: A film about product placement, which was entirely financed by product placement.

Review: In this clever documentary Morgan Spurlock, Super Size Me and Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?, explores product placement from the prospective of someone who is trying to make a product placement laden movie. Its a brilliant idea and Spurlock pulls it off with his usual charm and humor. Surprisingly, or not at all surprising if you think about it, the film doesn't really come out against product placement. What he does accomplish is in showing how the process works from start to finish; from the initial pitch to prospective businesses, to obligations that he has to fulfill in his contacts, and how his ideas clash with what the various companies will and will not do...in other words its a film about transparency. This is a very entertaining and informative documentary about something we encounter almost every day, so yes this is worth seeing.

Title: Armadillo
Year: 2010
Country of Origin: Denmark
Director: Janus Metz

Plot: A Danish documentary that follow a group of soldiers who are stationed at Forward Operating Base Armadillo in Afghanistan.

Review: Its a documentary about soldiers in Afghanistan, and its a pretty good one at that. I can't say that I correctly captures the life of a soldier in Afghanistan, since I never enlisted and I've never been to Afghanistan. Still this is a powerful piece of film making and one that is well worth watching.

If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend watching/reviewing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I personally quite enjoyed it, and is one of the few times Jim Carrey isn't playing a comical role.

Its on my list of films to watch. I'm kind of going through a Charlie Kaufman kick right now...speaking of which...

Being_John_Malkovich_poster.jpg

Title: Being John Malkovich
Year: 1999
Country of Origin: US
Director: Spike Jonze

Plot: On the 7 1/2 floor of the Mertin Flemmer Building there exists a door that allows all those to become John Malkovich for about 15 min before being ejected out into a ditch off of the New Jersey Turnpike.

Review: Possibly one of the oddest films to ever reach mainstream cinema. Thankfully its about as funny as it is weird. This is the debut film of both director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman. Kaufman provides the weirdness and comedy of the film while Jonze manages to ground the production in enough reality that suspending your disbelief is surprisingly easy. The cast is great, John Cusack and Cameron Diaz both do a fantastic job. John Malkovich easily steals the show in probably one of my favorite of his performances. All around enjoyable and funny, see it.

I've seen bits and pieces of the Swedish version, but I have seen the US one. I'll get around to watching it sooner or later.

Title: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Year: 2011
Country of Origin: US
Director: David Fincher

Plot: After losing a liable suit a journalist is hired by an essentric industrialist to solves a decades old mystery of what happened to his grandniece. To help in this task an enigmatic and slight damaged woman named Lisbeth Salander is also hired.

Review: Unsurprisingly, this dark tale is right up David Fincher's (Se7en, Zodiac) alley. Fincher handles this material like a champ, he doesn't over do it with the camera and he manages to set just the right mood for this plot. From what I've seen from the Swedish adaptation, this production is pretty of similar...though its kind of what you'd expect from being based on the same source material. Of course, the biggest surprise of the film is Rooney Mara as Lisbeth. Some of you may know from her role as Erica Albright in another Fincher film, The Social Network. She is almost unrecognizable in this film, especially if your only experience with her is from The Social Network, she does an absolutely amazing job here and is one of the main reasons to watch this film.

Sadly this film isn't with out problems; like how only half the cast bothers with Swedish accents. The plot drags at times and the film has somewhat uneven pacing. As for the cast, everyone is pretty good. Craig is a little dull, but I guess anyone would seem a little dull next to Mara's performance. This isn't one of Fincher's best film, it has its flaws...but its still very watchable. When I get around to watching the Swedish version all the way though I'll update this review with comparisons...till then.

Insomnia-Poster.jpg

Title: Insomnia
Year: 1997
Country of Origin: Norway
Director: Erik Skjoldbj?rg

Plot: Two officers from the Norwegian special police are sent to a town in the arctic circle to investigate the murder of a 17 year old girl.

Review: Yes, this film was remade in 2002 by Christopher Nolan and no just because this is the original film doesn't mean its a better film. The two are similar, but their differences are substantial enough to make the two very different experiences. This one is slower and airs less towards the big "Hollywood" scenes that are present in the remake; such as the chase across the log flow or the shoot out near the end. Stellan Skarsg?rd does a great job as the films unhinged lead and Bj?rn Floberg also is good as the murderer. Honestly, this is a great film...but its not necessary if you've already seen the remake. Sure they are different, but they have the same story and they're about the same in quality.
