John de Lancie playing what's basically the MLP version of Q was the lynchpin for me. (doesn't hurt either that Lauren Faust loves to wave her geek flag in the show)

It is a most glorious show if you are in tune with your inner child or just like cartoons in general. Personally, I would suggest to give the show a shot, and if you like it continue to watch it, but never associate with its fandom.
