$1000 laptop

I'm looking for a $1000 laptop, and since I never had one + I'm a tech noob I was wandering if anyone would point me in a good direction. The following is what I would expect from it:
  • Windows 8 compatible
  • Not too big, but doesn't have to be small either (14"~16")
  • Should be able to run games like BF4 or PlanetSide II [dedicated graphics card] (doesn't have to be ultra settings)
  • small mouse joystick (this is not necessary and if I have to decide between efficiency and the joystick I would go for efficiency)

Another thing I was planning on getting is something to keep the laptop from overheating. I know there are different cooling pads and whatnot, but I herd there is also the downside of more dust (than usual) getting in. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm in Europe, so getting stuff from USA will be problematic.

Best gaming laptops around by far and they are not highly inflated prices. Shop around there for some great laptops. If none of those are to your liking you can get an MSI - http://us.msi.com/ or an ASUS G series laptop - https://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/Gaming_Products/
 
Get a lenovo y510p. It can handle BF4 low to medium setting at 60fps.
Beware the mouse pad is a bit buggy. However, for dust issues lenovo has build it software which ramps up the fan speed periodically to remove dust.

I like wizekraker's suggestion. I'm a big Lenovo fan; I have a Y460P laptop with toggle graphics (turn GPU on for gaming, turn off for better battery life and web browsing). Personal opinion: Buy directly from manufacturer unless you're retailer is very reliable and someone you can go to for problems/fixes. You can find web coupon codes that'll bring the price of your online purchase from a manufacturer down. I got my laptop for about $1000, and the Online Discount + Coupon Code took about 450-500 off the original price (Around $1500)

Yup I directly bought it from lenovo.
I really impressed with haswell CPU, when I not gaming I barely feel air coming out of the exhaust and it is super quiet.
 
lenovo bought ibm and ibm has the water tray on everyone of their laptops so its waterproof .... :D
 
So what about this circumstance.. Gaming, College, and Portability.. then what?? :o
 
Best Buy (yes, I am trying to sell you something xD) has a gaming laptop for $1,000 flat right now. It's an ASUS model (very good company, I've been using their tablets and laptops for years now), and the specs are as follows:

Windows 8 64-Bit (Windows 8.1 update is optional, but free)
-Intel i7 4500U (There is a $1,200 variant that has an i7-4700 which is faster)
-Nvidia GeForce GT 745M 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card
-1920 x 1080 15.6 inch touch screen LCD display
-Backlit Keyboard
-1TB hard drive
-8GB DDR3 Memory
-HDMI, USB 3.0, built in wifi, even includes an external subwoofer that you can hook up to the laptop so your walls explode when you throw a grenade ;)

This laptop could handle BF4 easily on high settings. Our demo model has BF3 playing and its running maxed out.

And this is probably my best choice at the moment. Won't be able to buy it directly from lenovo because they only sell through retailers here, but in 2 weeks time expect to see me rollin' on that.

If it wasn't for the fact I'm on the otherside of the ocean I'd consider this option.
 
lenovo laptops have a water tray and the keyboard is kinda shut so water cant get to the mobo or internal components

Just let you knew Lenovo y510p has better specs than this minus the touchscreen and it is cheaper.
 
I will be buying the Lenovo y510p sometime within the next week, but there are couple questions I want to ask before I make the purchase.

First of all, will it be possible to replace the internal HDD with an SSD at some point?

I've seen couple y510p setups where the seller was saying it has a 1TB HDD + 8GB SSD, what does that mean exactly? Is it a hybrid and if so what is the point if Windows 8 64bit itself takes more than 20GB of space? And before the question arises, the laptop also had a DVD drive so it wasn't an UltraBay replacement.

I'm not sure about y510p specifically but I've found Lenovo to be easy to replace HDD and RAM on. Usually doors on the bottom you can open and pop the stuff out.

Yes, that drive is a hybrid drive. It uses SSD as a cache for the most accessed files, files that are least used remain on the patter area.
