gotta say I'm a little disappointed after few hrs play since the reset. ppl still like to camp :( I always thought that's because they value their points and rank but now I found it's just in their nature(maybe after few regular resets they might change) but other than that this reset wasn't bad :) now I feel free to use classes like rifle and sniper(which I suck at) and try to explore the new moves and I might even join another ego dods servers(which I rarely did before this reset) I gotta admit even my not that high past skill points regulated my play more than I thought ^^; now let's hope this reset makes ego servers more energetic! :)

Camping with Thompsons and BARs has been a big part of DoD since before it became DoD:S. To be fair though, the BAR used to have a deployable bipod, so it was somewhat understandable then.

forgive my poor English I'm having hard time expressing what I actually mean. what I meant by camping I meant the most extreme kind of camping like a) mg never leaving his/her 1st or base the entire game(even when his/her team had the mid) b) mg or sniper lying down on axis 2nd balcony for like 5 mins only aiming apt vcrack covering nothing else (sometimes even when axis had the yellow top) etc. Many of DODS' weapons have great recoil I don't blame players for trying to use it more efficiently and I don't blame the players who are trying to stay alive either especially the ones who already spent quite some time trying to come near enemy base and is waiting the right moment. the line between right camping or wrong camping may not be clear but there are certain way of camping and campers that actually hurt his/her own team. the disappointment and discontentment I expressed earlier was aimed toward them.

yeah I definitely noticed a theme when I was playing in Avalanche yesterday.
(ever since the team reset)

I kind of recognize this attack pattern from a few years ago, lol
Where they are running in tight packs together.

which would do a lot to explain why my grenades were so successful the other day. lol

yesterday the allied were just tearing us up using this attack pattern. lol but at the same
time, it has a disadvantage, that when they DO die, they all die together. I think everybody
was trying to protect cabbie, so that he could pick us all off with the sniper.

my timing was a mess yesterday, lol just couldn't make it click.
which brings me back to.... some days you got it, some days you don't. :frown:

BIOHZRD03 you just have to get your mojo back... it will come back to you. lol

yeah I know exactly what you mean explosion, it can definitely be frustrating....
is that, you'll have an MG sitting at first or whatever... and then when we have the advantage...
they are supposed to move up, so that we can "keep" what we have. If not displace entirely (move past middle),
so that we can keep our momentum and continue advancing, which also serves to keep what we gained.

But I think the problem is... that a lot of novice MG players, they know that the 1st is a strategic spot for the MG...
but they don't know about "having and keeping an advantage". So they literally are just waiting until we lose what
we gained, and then the other team just waltzes right on up to our 1st. Sure every once in a while, there can be
a straggler who makes his way through church or cellar, and slips past everyone.... but the 1st flags are so close
to spawn, most the time thats a non-issue.

It's like if you are "constantly" on the defense, you will almost always lose... you can mix up positions all you like...
and maybe you can hold them off for a really long time, but eventually someone is going to kill you though, and take your
objectives because that MG refuses to push forward.

On the flip side though, I recognize that there also may be some players who might not have full mobility of their limbs.
and that is why some players might stay in one spot for long durations, because its just obviously hard to play a game
with one hand. If that's the case, then I think you got to respect that, and show some understanding.

Think that's why we should be slow to judge, because we don't always know the whole story behind a person, at first
glance.

MG's can deal some damage surely... but at the same time, they become high priority targets as well. Because whenever
they shoot, its like they're pointing an arrow at themselves saying "Here I am!" and get picked off quite rapidly.

Like yesterday, we had this MG that obviously knew what he was doing... really destroyed our team. lol
He kept advancing, kept getting killed... but not before really cleaning house.

I think the worst position... is when you got a german MG sitting in the spawn, aimed at cellar exit...

I've never thought about the possible relationship between camping and lack of mobility before that's a totally new kind of thought to me and I thank u Warren for mentioning those possibility, hats off _ (_ _) _ and also I totally agree we should be slow to judge so I decided that I should disregard my previous impression of u being a nice guy and should open my mind to the possibility that u might be a Nazi wannabe or even worse a dog lover(God forbid) jokes aside thx warren for offering that advice that would help me stay positive or at least less frustrated

I am closing this thread until DOD:S leadership can review it.

Thanks for your assistance. I have deleted all the inappropriate banter, and re-opened the thread for CONSTRUCTIVE opinions, but let this be a warning, if you can't remain civil and respectful to each other this thread will be closed again.

But...but...but, I was so close to that #1 spot and then you reset the points! Oh, I'm just kidding of course. I think its been fun and comical to see the elite players fighting to get those top spots back. I really enjoy playing against all of them. Especially Superman! Oh and my nemesis Tony Bagels is on the rise too.

Has there been any movement to change the other empty servers? It would be nice to have a fun alternative to Avalanche. I don't mean this comment to spark forum drama (please don't)...I would just like to play on the safety of EGO with an alternative map that is fun.

Thank you and don't get mad when I'm the top player someday.

My personal feedback on the reset + other ideas to improve the ranking system:

  1. I totally agree that it was about time for a reset, but the reset was a little surprising to me. It'd be nice if there was an in-game notification 2-3 weeks before a reset. I would have rearranged my schedule to try to get more points early on. Ideally, there'd be a memorialization or archived copy of the ranks so that the work people have put into their points doesn't just vanish.
  2. I'd probably recommend a quarterly or semi-annual reset. Ideally, there'd be enough time between resets so you can take a break. Resetting on a monthly would make me feel like a demotivator / would care a lot less about the points / would play less.
  3. Right now, I rarely ever see any top ranked player center cap. Ideally, the center flag cap in Avalanche would be worth significantly more points. This would incentivize top ranked players to help their team on the most difficult point.
  4. I've seen some players just sit back in the same spot prone behind a sandbag looking through the tiny v to try and make a safe kill every 15-20mins (usually with the sniper). This often puts teams at an extreme disadvantage. I think we could disincentivize this behavior by reducing points of players who don't make a kill or move within a 3-5 minute window.

I think it's a good thing for the most part. Either way, time for me to get back at it and start killing again!

I totally agree that it was about time for a reset, but the reset was a little surprising to me.

It be nice if the server had an in-game notification when the next reset will occur. Each time you log-in that information will be displayed. There will be a message which says, "...days until reset". So that the players, who care about the points, can anticipate it, as opposed to being surprised.

Most players on the server seem happy that it happened, after they got used to it, but initially some were quite unhappy because they had no idea that a reset was taking place.

I'd probably recommend a quarterly or semi-annual reset. Ideally, there'd be enough time between resets so you can take a break. Resetting on a monthly would make me feel like a demotivator / would care a lot less about the points / would play less.

I would rather see it monthly because I think this will keep it most competitive and players will try again every month. If somebody falls back this month, and they know the next reset is in 4 months, they will not be as motivated. This way they can try again on short intervals.

Right now, I rarely ever see any top ranked player center cap. Ideally, the center flag cap in Avalanche would be worth significantly more points. This would incentivize top ranked players to help their team on the most difficult point.

The center flag should be worth a lot of points. Not sure what a lot is, but is 50 a lot? The 2nd flags should be worth, 10. And the base-flags, excluding your team flag, should be worth 50 as well.

Melee kills should be worth a ton of points, say 50 as well.

I've seen some players just sit back in the same spot prone behind a sandbag looking through the tiny v to try and make a safe kill every 15-20mins (usually with the sniper).

Some people who not care about points. For example, Eugene. According to him, from chat logs, "I been camping in DOD for years", "I am old and slow". He just likes to camp because it may be the only way he is capable to playing and he already admits it. Spinerspoon admits to having a missing hand and says that he cannot play normally. People like that, do not seem to care about points, and play like that for other reasons.

glockcoma
you make some pretty good points. makes me think that my own motivations for playing is a bit
different than others. up until this past month, I've never even considered looking at my rank.
maybe that's considered kind of lame, but I've always enjoyed how I play.

You never count your money. When you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done

Though I'm not sure if you can heed much of my advice considering my score is always in the hole. lol

I think another thing to consider, is that the person with the most objectives ends up with their name at
the top of the scoreboard, which can sometimes be misleading that this person is doing well.
On one hand, perhaps that's its own reward for the people taking the objectives... but you also have to
figure in... that if the opposing team is really on their game, the person taking objectives is going to have
to put up a fight to take those flags back.

So the players who capture flags, are getting the resistance from the other players who are just exiting
from their spawns to move forward. and the people who are looking for some easy kills with a sniper and MG
are just focused on those areas waiting for the cappers.

So its really just a game of cat and mouse. where the flags are the cheese.
the problem becomes, the cats like the mice more than they like the cheese.
At least until the mouse evolves into a dog and chases all the cats away. lol

At some point, I don't think there really is a problem, and it's just the nature of the game.
Because when you consider avalanche as a whole... there are only so many paths one can
take. Only so many positions a person can be in. This map has been so over-played that we
all have evolved to each others strategies, which sometimes can be part of the fun as well.

I also think its kind of a good thing that our snipers and MG's aren't running into middle as often.
Though I personally don't believe that is quite true... because last few times I've played, there
has been an MG in middle who has been racking up tons of kills.

Lets face it as well, being in middle is a dangerous place. lol over time you learn how to enter it a little
more safely... but in general, being in middle is pretty much like being naked. you're exposed to dozens
of unfavorable vantage points. At that point.... I don't think people even are considering their point system,
and they just don't want to DIE. lol So the middle is definitely (and obviously) a flag that is vital to the
conclusion of the game, and why it might be worth more to everyone. I guess the question is... whether it
should be considered something worth altering ones rank. Because the value of it, is its own reward, to
end the round, as well as gives that person an objective point, and also might give your team a sense of
accomplishment.

To that end, I think a larger question would be, what do you want rank to mean?
Do you want it to be a measurement tool to define your skill level? Does killing more people, or dying less,
define your skill? And does capturing a flag, whether its 1,2, or 3 factor into that said skill?
or maybe is it, staying alive the longest, does that make you a better player? or if you die the most, does
that make your more brave, or just foolish? If you run around more than others, does that make your playing
more diverse, or does it mean you worked harder than you had to, and less conservative?

I think that's really the nail on the head there, is that we all might have different measurements for how
one another plays. But at any given time, one persons different way of playing, might be more valuable
to the team as a whole.

Considering we do have 3-8 seconds to respawn, perhaps a menu could appear, asking you to define what
you thought that players value was. Whether the kill made was skillful, lucky, ironic, brave, foolish, funny.
Perhaps with more refined options than those though. you get the idea.

I've had times where I've come home from work and gave it a go, and I can't hit the broad side of a barn.
and at first I thought, maybe my aim was off, but then I realized it wasn't my aim at all. lol When you're
around a lot of people at work, you don't want to be shooting them with your eyes. So you learn to turn off
that killer instinct. and you can sometimes take that home with you. Why I am not so hard on myself when I
do poorly at first, because it just means subconsciously, I didn't want anyone to die. lol Something to think about.

Obviously this is just a game and should have little bearing on your reality, but its hard to do any one task,
without a little bit of it passing onto the next task you perform. I think its just how people are wired.

There is also another level to the game as well though, is that you can sometimes get your opponents to chat with you,
and that can sometimes distract them from playing their best game. (Just ask alicia!) lol Most the time, that is not
my strategy, and I just enjoy chatting with the other players, which can also sometimes be my downfall. But it just
goes to show you, another level of cleverness that our players can employ... the act of distraction, can definitely be
a tactic. I think I've heard war stories, using dirty magazines or a kids doll as a trick to distract people. Which might
be equivalent to maybe a spray, or some chat.

It's really hard to measure someones rank or skill, based solely on shooting someone.

I think the biggest reason why rank has little bearing for me,
is that no matter what # i'm ranked at.... it's not going to change
the way I play no matter what.

If I thought I could serve my team better by staying in spawn and kicking a chair around.
that's what I'd do. lol you just got to play the cards you're dealt with, and do the best you can.
no two ways about it.

As far as how many points each action gives - I'll post a few screenshots below for the points received in DODS, but refer to this page if you want to see it yourself: http://edgegamers.gameme.com/help

Weapon-specific Point Modifiers

What are all the weapon points modifiers?

Weapon points modifiers are used to determine how many points you should gain or lose when you make a kill or are killed by another player. Higher modifiers indicate that more points will be gained when killing with that weapon (and similarly, more points will be lost when being killed by that weapon). Modifiers generally range from 0.00 to 2.00.

General reminder about stat-padding/stat-farming

That being said - Just a general reminder that although it doesn't show in the MOTD, we do have a rule against stat-padding/stat-farming, which is defined on this post in the DoD:S FAQ's sticky thread: Link to Post

Thanks firehazard!

point modifier --- weapon
1.25 --- .30 caliber machine gun
1.20 --- bar(browning automatic rifle)
2.25 --- bazooka
3.00 --- punch
1.60 --- colt .45 model 1911
1.00 --- german grenade
1.30 --- german rifle grenade
5.00 --- german smoke grenade
1.20 --- m1 carbine
1.30 --- m1 garand rifle
1.30 --- m1 garand rifle
1.30 --- mauser kar 98k
1.50 --- mauser k98 sniper
1.20 --- mg42 machine gun
1.25 --- mp40 machine pistol
1.35 --- mp44 assault rifle
2.25 --- panzerschreck
1.50 --- pistol 38
1.50 --- pistol c96
3.00 --- spade entrenchment tool
1.50 --- springfield rifle with scope
1.25 --- thompson submachine gun
1.00 --- TNT Bomb
1.00 --- U.S. Grenade
3.00 --- U.S. Issue Knife
5.00 --- U.S. Smoke Grenade

i think the points for the panzerschreck and bazooka are a bit too high.
maybe the consideration is the limited ammo supply, but it still has a
carbine to fall back on.

if anything, i would raise the M1 garand, and the K98 (without scope), makes more
sense that they would have just as many points as a pistol.

I don't see why STG should get .05 more than the BAR, they handle just about the same.
also... I don't see why the BAR would get just as many points as the MG42 .. and the
BAR .05 less than the 30Cal MG.

The BAR and STG has a lot of recoil, making them less accurate... but packs slightly less punch
of a k98. So if anything, the BAR and STG should have a higher point modifier, because they're
slightly harder to handle... and when they do handle well, they are in close combat, which means
you would likely have to advance further into the map to make use of it (which may prove difficult).
The k98 and M1 would have advantage over the BAR and STG in almost any long-range scenario.

and if rate of fire and ammunition is what we're factoring in, the MG42 and 30Cal MG should be getting
far less points. I would suggest something like or .85 considering a grenade gets 1.00 and those
classes only get 2 (at most), where the MG gets something like 250 bullets and can easily take out
half a team.

a well placed grenade I think is worth far more than someone picking people off with an MG.

i never thought of killing someone with a smoke grenade. lol the person would obviously have to be
badly wounded. worth 5 points for its rarity.

I think the Punch/Spade is a bit excessive as well, they're not "as" rare, it does take close proximity
and can be more difficult, but it happens pretty frequently. i do not find a bazooka kill or a punch, to
be any less of a feat than any other than these weapons.

and the BAR and STG shouldn't be taking a backseat to the assault weapons either... with .05 - .10
difference. If anything, the BAR and STG should be getting slightly more points for their inaccuracy
and or lack of control.

Although I do prefer a thompson over the mp44 at times... I think they're both just about equal
weapons, with maybe the thompson being slightly tighter on accuracy. So if anything a .05 difference.

Though most of these modifiers aren't too bad.
