glockcoma
you make some pretty good points. makes me think that my own motivations for playing is a bit
different than others. up until this past month, I've never even considered looking at my rank.
maybe that's considered kind of lame, but I've always enjoyed how I play.
You never count your money. When you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done
Though I'm not sure if you can heed much of my advice considering my score is always in the hole. lol
I think another thing to consider, is that the person with the most objectives ends up with their name at
the top of the scoreboard, which can sometimes be misleading that this person is doing well.
On one hand, perhaps that's its own reward for the people taking the objectives... but you also have to
figure in... that if the opposing team is really on their game, the person taking objectives is going to have
to put up a fight to take those flags back.
So the players who capture flags, are getting the resistance from the other players who are just exiting
from their spawns to move forward. and the people who are looking for some easy kills with a sniper and MG
are just focused on those areas waiting for the cappers.
So its really just a game of cat and mouse. where the flags are the cheese.
the problem becomes, the cats like the mice more than they like the cheese.
At least until the mouse evolves into a dog and chases all the cats away. lol
At some point, I don't think there really is a problem, and it's just the nature of the game.
Because when you consider avalanche as a whole... there are only so many paths one can
take. Only so many positions a person can be in. This map has been so over-played that we
all have evolved to each others strategies, which sometimes can be part of the fun as well.
I also think its kind of a good thing that our snipers and MG's aren't running into middle as often.
Though I personally don't believe that is quite true... because last few times I've played, there
has been an MG in middle who has been racking up tons of kills.
Lets face it as well, being in middle is a dangerous place. lol over time you learn how to enter it a little
more safely... but in general, being in middle is pretty much like being naked. you're exposed to dozens
of unfavorable vantage points. At that point.... I don't think people even are considering their point system,
and they just don't want to DIE. lol So the middle is definitely (and obviously) a flag that is vital to the
conclusion of the game, and why it might be worth more to everyone. I guess the question is... whether it
should be considered something worth altering ones rank. Because the value of it, is its own reward, to
end the round, as well as gives that person an objective point, and also might give your team a sense of
accomplishment.
To that end, I think a larger question would be, what do you want rank to mean?
Do you want it to be a measurement tool to define your skill level? Does killing more people, or dying less,
define your skill? And does capturing a flag, whether its 1,2, or 3 factor into that said skill?
or maybe is it, staying alive the longest, does that make you a better player? or if you die the most, does
that make your more brave, or just foolish? If you run around more than others, does that make your playing
more diverse, or does it mean you worked harder than you had to, and less conservative?
I think that's really the nail on the head there, is that we all might have different measurements for how
one another plays. But at any given time, one persons different way of playing, might be more valuable
to the team as a whole.
Considering we do have 3-8 seconds to respawn, perhaps a menu could appear, asking you to define what
you thought that players value was. Whether the kill made was skillful, lucky, ironic, brave, foolish, funny.
Perhaps with more refined options than those though. you get the idea.
I've had times where I've come home from work and gave it a go, and I can't hit the broad side of a barn.
and at first I thought, maybe my aim was off, but then I realized it wasn't my aim at all. lol When you're
around a lot of people at work, you don't want to be shooting them with your eyes. So you learn to turn off
that killer instinct. and you can sometimes take that home with you. Why I am not so hard on myself when I
do poorly at first, because it just means subconsciously, I didn't want anyone to die. lol Something to think about.
Obviously this is just a game and should have little bearing on your reality, but its hard to do any one task,
without a little bit of it passing onto the next task you perform. I think its just how people are wired.
There is also another level to the game as well though, is that you can sometimes get your opponents to chat with you,
and that can sometimes distract them from playing their best game. (Just ask alicia!) lol Most the time, that is not
my strategy, and I just enjoy chatting with the other players, which can also sometimes be my downfall. But it just
goes to show you, another level of cleverness that our players can employ... the act of distraction, can definitely be
a tactic. I think I've heard war stories, using dirty magazines or a kids doll as a trick to distract people. Which might
be equivalent to maybe a spray, or some chat.
It's really hard to measure someones rank or skill, based solely on shooting someone.
