To the moon!

So I read an article today about how Stephen Hawking thinks we need to revisit the moon.

Personally I think he is right. I think the moon is the perfect stepping stone for us.

Because we currently have all the technology to make it a reality, and most of it already built.

Also, if anything goes wrong, the moon is not so far off that we won't be completely helpless to do
anything about it. Considering it takes only 3 days to get there. 240,000 miles.

Another good reason, is it is not a one-way trip like some propose the trip to mars would be.

If mars is inhospitable and we can't survive on it without a suit, it doesn't seem like it would be
any different than surviving on the moon.

It just seems like it would be more prudent in the long-run, to test out our extreme environment
survival strategy somewhere closer to home.... then when we feel comfortable, take it a step further.

you can do everything on the moon that you can do on mars. there is only 2 things that might be
game changers... one would be gravity. second would be the atmosphere, although unbreathable, I
think they were still planning on processing it for something.

I had a novel idea though, when we do finally return to the moon.... I think it would be really neat
if we took a rover and maybe attached a plow, and carved a large pattern into the moon.... that way
it could be seen by everyone anywhere... and it would be a nice little achievement for us. to look up
at the moon and see something to remind us, that the moon and the stars are not so far out of reach.

I think mankind got so hung up on taking giant leaps, that they have forgotten,
the best way to make progress, is by taking baby steps.

well frankly speaking I think when we have to depend on moon or mars colonies it means we're already ****ed beyond salvation. we should start from keeping earth safe which will be much more beneficial to many more people that's the baby steps I would like to take
p.s. my country has nether the technology or money to go to moon so it's kinda mandatory steps for my people but still...

Well, the idea is never to 'depend' on them, but is just a logical strategy to ensure humanities survival
for the long term.

Its the old adage, not putting all of your eggs in one basket.... just in case something ever happens to
that singular basket, you have something else to fall back on. (in that analogy, the earth would be the
basket, and we would be the egg)

Elon Musk and Stephen hawking have raised concerns, because they realize that their are so many
dangers out there that could threaten our survival as a species. Whether its a rapid climate shift, a
stray meteorite that hits the earth, a biological weapon, a disease, a destructive technological
revolution (ie. bad ai) or a Nuclear War. Life in general is pretty resiliant, but at the same time, it can be
fragile too.

So occupying another planet/moon is more about just spreading humanity out in case of catastrophe,
and also eventually we will have propagated a population that is not sustainable. Which I think is more
so what worries Stephen Hawking... where Elon Musk is more worried about a catastrophe in general.

Not sure if you've ever played any command and conquer games, but there is also a similar concept,
that when you build your power supplies, you don't want to bunch them all together... because if
someone releases a devastating weapon in that singular area, you become completely defenseless
without power. So you want to spread out the placement of power supplies.

As far as I know, there isn't really many advantageous resources on mars or the moon... if you're looking
for resources, you're better off picking one of the moons in jupiter and saturn. Even then it would be far
easier and more profitable to just mine an asteroid, because you won't have to muck with gravity, and
asteroids contain a plethora of useful metals.

I think just the real trick to maintaining any long-term colony, is really just going to be the conversion
technology. Taking what you have, and converting it into useful gases and elements. That's why i think
its paramount that we test our hand at surviving a little closer to home. I suppose we have had some
experience in general, with our international space station. We just have to duplicate that process, but
on the moon.

I gotta admit even the imagination of outer earth colony kind of excites me since I'm a fan of sf series like stargate and star trek. but when I really think about it, I become skeptical. forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't it the ultimate purpose of having another option, in this case having outer earth colony, to use them when the main option went wrong? and in that scenario earth would have to be so ****ed that humanity have to seek refuge at moon or mars which is even worse than Antarctica. when u actually think about the future when u use this option human species wouldn't mean much at that point. it's like a million people have to buy this insurance but it only pays when 999,999 of them are dead and the payment is barely enough to keep the last one alive. or it's like you can't just put your eggs in this new basket but u have to make it yourself with a diamond(perhaps u have to sell some eggs from the first basket) and u can only put 1 or 2 eggs even if u somehow made it. it costs 10 billion to just build a base that can sustain 10 lives, if we're to survive as a species on the moon I can't even imagine how much budgets would be needed. survival of human race sounds nice but what would it cost actual humans?
