Viacom, a media company has sued Google, the owners of Youtube, for users that posted copyright videos owned by viacom. You gotta be kidding me. I heard about this, thought it was pretty stupid that they'd sue. It happens to Sony all the time, and they just tell google to remove the video. Easy! Now Viacom sues and basically WINS! In a nutshell, the judge ordered Google to hand over every single username and ip and which user watched which video. That's a lot of data. Full article can be read here: http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/07/judge-orders-yo.html

Are you serious? Shouldn't YouTube protect the users' viewing history and IP as a part of their privacy policy (which I haven't read yet, by the way)?

That is absolutely ridiculous. What I don't understand is, is the judge ordering Google to hand over EVERY SINGLE USERNAME? Or just ones accused of watching Viacom videos?

It's a scare tactic,
What they will do is go after the IP address that are watching the most copyrighted material.

Others will be randomly selected (even a few seconds of viewing will cost you lost of $$$)

Watching movies online is a business to piraters,

So remember, DONT WATCH MOVIES ONLINE!

Watching uploaded copyright is not breaking any law. Putting it up is.

And they did not win yet. They only gained access to prove their point. Winning is the billion dollars.

However, Google can appeal this. You can't just give out so much private information, there are federal laws against that and usually they are set aside for more serious events than Viacom crying like a little baby.

Yep, that's what they're trying to find, the ip of ppl who uploaded copyrighted material. Seriously, I think Google, the most powerful internet company by far can handle it.

Oh bull crap on a stick made of crap. How many times have we heard this? YouTube will do this as soon as Napster does the same..... that should be sometime around the release of Duke Nuke'em Forever.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I honestly hate Viacom, I don't even watch TV anymore because I am tired of greedy corporations like these....I also include RIAA and MPAA in my blacklist.

Google is full of money and very smart people they will fight this to the end.

(funny how Viacom sued YouTube as soon as they got bought by Google)

Whatever man, just another excuse for a company that is jealous of Google who has more money then they do to get more money.

They own everything do they not? Why sue only google? Only because they know they will get a big cash settlement.

And this is the new Viacom as well...the once who bought out the CBS subnet Viacom and single-handed ruined some of our favorite networks.

Ugh..

guys dont worry if you uploaded one there only using it as support....

"Viacom wants the data to prove that infringing material is more popular than user-created videos, which could be used to increase Google's liability if it is found guilty of contributory infringement."

From the YouTube Terms Of Service:
YOU SPECIFICALLY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOUTUBE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR USER SUBMISSIONS OR THE DEFAMATORY, OFFENSIVE, OR ILLEGAL CONDUCT OF ANY THIRD PARTY AND THAT THE RISK OF HARM OR DAMAGE FROM THE FOREGOING RESTS ENTIRELY WITH YOU.

I understand that it should be the users fault, but you got to see that the content is hosted on a server which resides in the USA, which google owns. So they can be sued up and down the usa border.
