vent spammers

Hi guys,

I would just like to point out that there are a lot of spammers on our vent channel lately. Today during the FL TR scrim we had at least two spammers. Probably had them screaming in our ears for a good ten minutes total. This really takes the fun out of a scrim that both sides had been looking forward to for a few weeks. The scrim ended about 20 minutes ago and we have already had a new spammer since.

I would just like to suggest that we move the ventrilo information to another part of the website so that only members can see it. Some people have also suggested password protecting it.

Suggestions, ideas?

We aren't going to password the Ventrilo server. There are plenty of server admins on to deal with spammers. Just look for somebody with a tag before their name.

alright well we have had 2 more in the last ten minutes so plz help:(

and somehow they are now able to broadcast across all of our channels regardless of the room they are in

I think somebody just used my name so guys if you see a guy named Rasmus and spams then it's not me.

A guy used my name in TF2 and mic spammed then left and changed to another guy and came back on so on... he was perma banned tho :D

It was strange... the spammers had some sort of admin power and were useing global voice...

I've seen the ones with the admin powers. One night, some guy kept pulling me and a few other guys into a room to tell us about some new game he was advertising for. Its very weird. We just ignored him and after a while he just said "so if your interested, ill be down here" and moved us up to some other channel.
I'm wondering how they even got the admin, there must be some new Vent exploit or hack or something.

I was there with RedFlag when that happened! We've been having alot lately! Probably four in the past hour?

I think a password would be good.

This way we could block the current spammers from accessing vent. It wouldn't be a problem with any of the members, we could just enter the password once and get it done with.

No clue where the password would be posted though, to keep people from accessing it. So it may not be such a good idea because people can come on the website and see the pass is they really wanted to spam it. But it would keep most people out.

Just ignore them because they want a reaction from you and thats what they ususally post in youtube videos of ventrilo harasment

hehe we just ban them when we find out who they are and sniper how are you?

Passwording does work, but it also limits access. People who are interested in joining eGO but haven't yet, and people who have left eGO on good terms and are still a part of the community are left out if you add a password. We've done it on the past and it's kept out spammers, but lots of other people we'd like on as well.

Banning is wonderful, but these guys are good. They can switch their IPs and such. In the past, I've tried to ban and gotten a message that the user was already banned on the subnet.

It's a problem with being #1--people will come punk you just because you are. Rest assured admins are doing their best to stem it without disrupting the entire vent setup.

It's a tradeoff between security and accessibility, and we've traditionally chosen to leave it open so we can meet new people on our vent server.

yeah, wasn't too fun, made it to where my vent sound and tf2 sound were scrambled up, had to exit out of both :|

Being relativity new, and figuring you guys had a vent or TS, i tracked down the website and then looked for vent/TS info on it (which is nicely displayed on the left)

My point, i was under the impression most people follow the same approach, if thats the case, including a password at the same forum page would at least keep the spammers off that are just looking through the web servers.

Exactly. Passwording the server is a bad idea, imho.

right, but like i suggested perhaps we could put ventrilo info somewhere else on the server so only members could view it. This would decrease the amount of spammers i think
