New Build (Corei7)

What's wrong with over-clocking?

"Remember, too much power is never enough"!!!!

Peace!

P.S. Thinking of over-clocking my ram though!

Power crazy cigarjohn, what are you going to do with two GTX295s? Isn't that a bit overkill? With that setup, the computer would probably only start giving noticable fps drops when you're playing 4 copies of Crysis on max, at the same time, all at 50% transparency. :P

But seriously, what do you plan to do with two GTX295s? Because I can't really think of any use for that except for next-next-next-next generation proofing it. And a 2000 watt PSU? THAT'S CRAZY!!!!

Well, I wish I had that kind of money. :D

If anything is worth doing, its worth overdoing. :D The GTX295's ATI equivalent is the 4870x2 and I hope to have 2 of those in my puter some day. Why may you ask? Because

Two GTX 295's!

Well, I could enter the world of Quadro but the drives for that, you can't play any games on. And I need power for video editing and post production work. That's why I'm choosing two instead of one. But yes, it is crazy. And I'm a crazy, power monger.

And each video card requires 680 watts. So two of them equal1360, 125 for mobo, 15 watts for each 1 gb ram chip and I'm using 6 2 gb corsair ram. I'm already close to 1700 watts. Then there are the 4 hard drives, and blue-ray and dvd drives and my liquid cooling engine to liquid cool my two vid cards, processor, chipset, ram, mobo and hard drives.

Peace!

Cigarjohn, the GTX 295 requires a maximum of 295 watts. No more.
Two GTX 295's in SLi would require a maximum of 590 watts.

'680 watts' - thats nonsense.

When they say "requires 680 watts minimum" they mean your PSU must be that or higher. 300ish watts for video card itself then the rest for system power. (Depending on what else you have in your system)

Yeah, I was getting a bit worried when you said a single card required 680 watts. The 680 definitely refers to the minimum wattage of your PSU, so a 1000-1200 watt PSU will be more than enough to power your rig, even with liquid cooling and such. I didn't even know 2000 watt PSUs existed, LOL!

Well when I went to Nvidia's site, it did display the card and did state that it needed a minimum of 680 watts to run. And another clan member; aknightforni, who was assisting me in telling me what products I needed to build a dream machine also saw the card.

But apparently, I went to the nVidia site and now I can't find the card on there. And I then called nVidia and they told me that it never existed and that it was a thrid party who was spreading rumors that were not validated by nVidia yet.

So you may think that I am a goofball and a lier. But honestly, I swear I saw it on nVidia and it did say 680 watts.

This site does say it runs at 289 watts! Which if it's true, than I can save money and get a Thermaltake 1300 watt power supply. Like I really give a dang about money. LOL!

But I'll keep searching for that site and if it's true, I'll prove you wrong. This war! I do love you bro, but this is a challenge. Whether I win or lose at it, I'm still going to proceed in proving you wrong. LOL!

Peace!

When they say minimal power requirements they mean the PSU. To run a 4870x2 you need around a minimum of 650 watts or so and I've seen people run 2 of those on a 1000 watt PSU. I'm telling you man, you'd be just fine with a 1200 watt PSU :D

1200 watts sounds good to me.

Yeah! Your rithe! I'd rather fork out $400.00 for a 1200 watter than $900.00 for a 2000 watter. Then I would have to trade in my UPS for a much larger one. Total Havoc.

Something that's supposed to be so simple is turning out to be so complex. LOL!

Peace!

On a side note, as far as the monitors go, i'd go with the Samsung hands down. :D

And yes, i do own a samsung :P

WAIT WAIT WAIT hold the phone,

ok first of all I would say the bloodrage kicks the gigabyte board out of the water. If you are planning on overclocking then there is no contest. especially if you plan on overclocking the memory then bloodrage wins hands down.

but my question is, where the heck is the ASUS rampage II extreme on here? does nobody pay attention to top of the line boards?

I was considering the bloodrage and waited for about 2 months for it to come out but then got the rampage II extreme because it had more features and more importantly 6 dimm slots.

IMO the bloodrage is a little bit too watered down. Its smaller and prettier for a reason, there are less perks and technology on it.

If I were you and spending was not too much of a problem I would definitely bust out an extra 100 dollars and go with the rampage II extreme.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131352&Tpk=rampgae ii extreme

The only disadvantage I see with not getting the bloodrage and that the memory a little higher for native support and there are LGA775 socket mounting holes for cpu heatsinks on the board.

oh and did i mention the rampage II extreme is a republic of gamers board?
that means its extremely high quality and is not gonna disappoint

at least look at the rampage II extreme.
otherwise it looks awesome:P

on another note when i looked at your video card pick I saw that it was visiontek. I would just like to offer an alternative for you. The MSI version of the card costs the same and is faster than the visiontek card. The MSI card has a core clock of 780mhz compared to the visiontek core clock of 750mhz. That difference along with other minor ones would cause me to urge you towards the MSI card. Plus, it costs the same.

alright sorry for triple post guys but lol, there are better options out for monitor and case.

Ok not to stomp on your build, you have apparently done your research and picked out some very nice components, but for monitor I would offer this HP one as a suggestion. Me and a bunch of my friends have the 22 inch version of this one and it is AMAZING. Now the video I included is of the 22 inch but the only difference is size.

And now to pick on your case. I dont know if its just me but that looks awfully expensive for a mid tower case. Here is a thermaltake case that you might fall in love with, apart from its name. And if you are interested in this case please please please watch the tigertv video I have included, it really helps.

Thanks for the suggestions, but First of all I did consider the Rampage II, its a bit to expensive for my taste and its not an ATX standard size. Won't fit in my current case. (And yes, I did all the measuring and it won't fit) 2nd of all, I picked the Visiontek one because I like the brand, have a Visiontek card now and it hasn't let me down yet. I am also considering the Sapphire one, and the HIS because they are cheaper, nice brands, and the same specs. The MSI one is a factory overclocked card at 780mhz when a normal clocked card is at 750mhz, I can overclock an extra 30mhz no problem. The XOC and OC versions of the cards seem like a waist to me. 3rd, I've already bought the Silverstone Fortress and I love this case. Sure its expensive but you get what you pay for. This thing is top of the line and very well made, pretty much my dream case if I had to pick one. I watch tiger direct reviews whenever I find them and I've watched this one already, its a nice case but its not for me. 4th, the monitor, I've considered that one before as well because we have it at Bestbuy here but its about another $130 and its a bit to big for where it would have to sit. Not as mobile as the others as well. Thanks for all the suggestions man. I've done a lot of homework on this computer and have carefully picked out the parts and I feel I won't be disappointed with my selection. I know some people out there might just think I threw this parts together like 10 minuets before I posted this but I didn't. I've worked really hard finding just the right parts. :)
My wishlist first started off with an AMD quad-core, then to an Intel Core2quad quad-core. I juggled those around for a month or 2 then Corei7 came out and I decided to go that route.

I know I have a problem: Spending all my time on Newegg, reading reviews, watching tech videos, drooling over new parts, and I collect pictures of people's new machines when ever I find them. I know, it sounds weird but it gives me ideas. :D

maybe consider saphire, it has got an award from hardware.info for best ATI manufacturer of 2008

I think I will. Its $489 as well :D But by the time I get a 4870x2 I'm sure they will be down even more in price. (With the GTX295 coming on the 8th and all) :D

GPU Power Consumption?

Unless you have proof on your actions on the GTX 295 and it's power consumption, you shouldn't make accusations about something you don't know anything about.

I want to see the proof. Find it on nvidia and prove it to all of us.

If your right; bless your heart, you will save me a bundle. If your wrong, then I'll have screw-up my modding and have to purchase a 2000 watt external power supply.

Peace!

All these sites and i'm sure much more say this card uses up around 230 - 280 watts. When they say it needs 680w minimum it means the PSU needs to be that or higher. There is no way, just no way, this card uses 680watts alone. The 4870x2 is a power hungry card and it under full load uses 270watts. People recommend a 600w PSU or higher for the 4870x2 as well. The GTX295 is just not going to require 680watts by itself.

This should holdout just fine:

I'm sure your right. But when the specs were displayed, it must have been an error on there part. I guess nvidia displayed the info on the new card on their site just to see how it would look and then forgot to take it off. I guess they will be putting it back on after January 9th when the card makes it's debut.

But I can't do anything until the card is announced. Then I will know if 1 or 2 cards are needed for my configuration. 1 or 2 cards makes a big determination on my power needs and internal thermals.

Now I'm at another dilema:

Should I go with 2 hard drives on a RAID 1 and 2 hard drives on a RAID 0 or 4 hard drives on a RAID 10 - 1+0?????

Decisions, decisions, decisions??????

Any advice?

Any one with similar configurations?

Peace!
