The thing is my router isnt supplied by comcast. Its a store bought one that I had to hook up and everything. They originally gave me a modem which is not hook into my router.
Ideally Router does not route down the speed. Hub does, switch doesn't.
There are many factors in talking about why speed is lower than what you receive.
Instead of connecting it to a router, you can get higher speed by connect your PC directly with a CAT5 to your modem. This is always true because it's 1 to 1 connection. Period.
Now, that when you connect a router to the modem, ideally it doesn't reduce any amount. It is also true. But we know this world is not perfect. There is a little amount being reduce but the amount is so little, there is almost no impact on your speed at all.
Beside the thing about your port only support to 100Mpbs, let us face the other factors.
The distance from the router to a computer with a CAT5.
Other routing and switches or hubs that bypass in between if any.
Your CAT5 cable itself.
Other people are using more bandwith at the moment.
Your bandwidth limited.
I live in a house (2 floor and 1 basement). I have 10 computers at home. 3 for me, 2 for my sister, 3 for my dad, 1 for my cousin, and 1 for my uncle.
2 years ago I had DSL myself. I have the modern on the second floor, so I need a router to route out the connections to other computers. One CAT 5 goes to my dad's computer (at that time he only used 1 computer). One CAT 5 to my computer, 1 CAT5 is used for Ethernet <-> DSL, and 1 CAT goes down to the first floor. At first floor, I had a 5 port switch to continue the distrubition. 1 CAT is used to connect to the Swtich, 4 ports are down. And so the rest 3 -4 ports are used for the computers on the first floor and basement.
Now this sounds insane and it is. In the old days we used DSL and it is done from phone line jet to your DSL modem. This techonology is way too outdated. The neighborhood we are living in is good with DSL but our phone jet isn't that good. Apparently, because the phone jet is some 30 feets away from my living room (jet is located in my bedroom, and I have the moderm in the living room), this created another big distance for the phone jet to transmit the singal.
What happened was that the speed was signifcantly reduced when we had traffic in busy days. This is not just because we had so many computers in used, but also with the factors that our phone jet was far away from the DSL. There is a long distance gap. Although it only take less a fraction of second to do the job, the theory behind the distance is also confirmed by several senior engineers when they visited my home.
Now I had a cable server. The same situation. This year I have a total of 10 computers in used. Although only 5 are ctually using, but look at the same structure. From one router to another switch. From 2nd floor to 1st floor and to basement. From one device to another, traffic is created.
But in your case, I don't see any significant reduction at all. You should ask your friends who used comcast in your area to test their speed.
You should also check the speed directly connect to the modem, not via the router. See the difference and tell us what you think.
These services will tell you "don't use router, that's why your speed is slower than expected". Yes but there are so many factors. I have years of experience in these routing. I can say my house has the most complicated and craziest network setup done by myself.
