is there a way to get a 14.3 gig folder from my laptop to my desktop w/o a external or falshdrive?

well, if you have a PC already set up, just unplug the harddrive from the laptop and copy & paste onto the desktop's harddrive

copying and pasting will be harder, unless its just text or image files (jpg's or ISO's) But if you wanted to make a exact copy of your harddrive to put onto another bigger hard drive its do-able you might want to google software for doing such things i know partition magic will do it but it cost money to get that program there is a really excellent free program that does it but the name escapes me at the moment. However if you are not computer savvy you might want to just consider a external or flash drive to do it all.

Connect your computer directly to your laptop via Ethernet cable, that will be able to transfer at 5 - 20mb/s and it wont require that much or any work to set up.

Don't forget to use a crossover cable if you're connecting from computer to computer. If you use a straight through cable you won't get any connectivity.

the file isnt on a external or flash drive, its on my laptop. just wanting to get it from my laptop to my pc. whats a cross over cable?

A crossover cable is a special Ethernet cable where the wires go to different places in each of the connectors. I agree that this would be the easiest way.

so from the pics it look like its just a ethernet cable with a standard ethernet end on both sides. if so i have one of those and how would i go about transferin the files.

It's not. It has wires some wires mixed up which you can see here. If you don't have one of these, you could try transferring them over your home network.

ok. so how do i transfer without one of those, how do i transfer using my home network? im sorry i am asking so many questions. if its to much to type can you post a link or something to a site that explains it.

What operating system are you using?

This is a general solution, it will differ depending on your operating system.

In the Network folder (also known as My Network Places), you should see a few different folders. These will be titled according to the names of the computers on your network. Copy the files you want to transfer into one of these folders. Make sure the computer whose folder you are transferring the files into is turned on.

On the other computer open up the same folder, the files should be in there. Now you can copy them wherever you like on that computer.

well i havent used windows in a long time but i believe you need t assgine both computers the same workgroup name which you can change if you right click my computer and hit properties and find the option in one of the tabs.

than right click on the folder with what you want to transfer in it and hit properties an the sharing tab and enable network sharing.

now it should show up on the other computer under network places.

i may be fuzzy on this i havent been on a windows machine in a month or so.

I can't remember exactly how I did it (I'm on 7 now, was on vista), but I will type what I can remember. I could possibly guide you through it if you tell me what you see. This is wireless.

Make sure your Desktop is connected to your wireless network, and the same with your laptop.

Open up the Start Menu. (On your Desktop).
Click "Computer".
At the left, find and click Network.
It may tell you that you need to enable Network Discovery. Do it.
You should see all computers connected to your network. I will call your Laptop LP, and Desktop PC.
Double click LP.

Do you see a Public Folder along with some other folders? If so, good

Go to your Physical(By that I mean in person go to it and use it) Laptop, Find the folder(s) with the files you want to transfer.
Right click the folder.
Click Properties.
Click Sharing.
Click Advanced Sharing.
Check Share this Folder.
Press OK.
Close the Properties Window.
Repeat for each folder (unless they are all within one sub folder)

Go back to your Physical PC, if you're not already there, repeat the steps I told you to get to where the Public/Other folders are, and you should now see the folders you chose to share on your laptop.

If you can't see any folders, or can't access LP from PC, try this:

GO to your LP

Go to Network and Sharing Center. Under where it says "Your Network Name" it should say "%variable Network", such as Public Network. If it says public network, click it, and change it to private it, if it is work network, change it to private( I don't think you need to if it's Work, but do it just for simplicity).

there should be some options under "Change your network settings" Try and do some thinking when you see these options, as I don't remember what they are exactly for Vista. There should be some that hint to sharing data. Change them accordingly, like I think one allows you to disable a password to access LP. Do it. Now you should be able to access LP from PC and copy them over to your PC's HDD. You can share your Local Disk to have complete access to everything I think too.

If this doesn't help, I apologize, but I don't have a 2nd PC anymore to refresh my memory on how I did it to get data from my Laptop to my desktop.

I did once access my friends entire Hard Drive by just sharing his Local Disk :$ ( I didn't do anything bad lol, I told him I was doing it )

If you have an Ethernet cable, it's pretty much the exact same process. Just connect them both via Ethernet cable(I did it through Ethernet also).

thanks i finally got it onto my desktop after an hour of messin around with file sharing options. If i wanted to give it to my friend would i just repeat what i did except connect to his network?

alright. lol i tred to send it to him via xfire and it wouldnt work. said to make sure it wasnt open in another application. XD

Never used xfire to transfer files before, didn't even know that was possible lol. You can always make a .rar (WinRAR Compressed file, similar to .zip WinZIP) and then transfer it, don't think you can transfer just a regular folder. It being in use might have to do with it being shared, no idea. Try disabling the sharing of the folder(s) if you haven't already.
