I want to make a jail map. IM kinda tired of how some maps have places that have secret places and suck so I would like to make my own and have it so its fun for both teams and fair so that T's cant get into some area that CT's cant see or anything like that. Can you give me tips and how to do important things like buttons and such.

If you're just starting then start small. Don't start with making Jail maps if you haven't made a map before.

You have to crawl before you can walk.

True, Thanks for stopping me from getting ahead of myself Rogue. Any Idea what I should start with then?

Start with the basics and get familiar with Hammer.

Such as build small rooms and expand to multiple rooms and an outside, etc.

Dont just start full on a huge map like Jail maps or Zombie Mod or others.

There's a sticky with sites and the first one by ModDb shows the basics.

Yeah, as Rogue said, start off small. If there is a set of tutorials that you are following, make a map while following the tutorials. So you kind of see how they are applied.

What they said, starting big will always lead to you getting stuck and giving up

Youtube. Just type in Hammer editor tutorial x (with x being whatever you wanna learn like buttons or skyboxes) and watch the videos roll.

Also, once you've started working on a "real" map not just a test map make sure you compile OFTEN and then TEST it to make sure you aren't making a huge mistake, it happens to almost everyone when they first start mapping. Either it's a leak or the made their walls unrealistically tall and then you don't want to spend several days debugging so you scrap it and lose hours of work. Just a thought :)
