When it comes to processors I really don't know what is considered good and what isn't. At the moment I have a (copied from dxdiag) Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200 @2.20 GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz. I'm assuming it isn't too good because it came with the computer when I bought it about a year ago. I was hoping for some explanation about what makes a good processor and also links to some good ones since I feel like upgrading. Thanks in advance for the help :)

Heya Phil (my RL name too hah), when ya look at processors, there's three things to look at really: how many cores, the processor speed and the bus speed. The thing is, in your case, is it's pretty tough to upgrade yer processor if you got a brand-name PC. When it comes to getting a new processor, you need to see if yer motherboard can support it, it's the correct pin setting, and other things like if the motherboard supports hyperthreading, as well as the processor. Hope this helps!

Ah ok. I think sorta get it. I'll have a look at that stuff and see if I can even upgrade lol. Thank you for the info Phil :)

If I can upgrade, or decide to start putting aside money to build a new computer, could you guys give suggestions for good processors? Thanks!

Sure thing! Ya can PM me, IM me, email me or w/e ya want.

Im guessing your using a socket 775 right now becuase you have an E2200, i could be mistaken but i highly doubt it considering its a core 2 duo and they are all socket 775.........if you were to upgrade, you could get any Quad series from intel, just not the new i7 or i5 CPU's. I have a Q6600 which is stock 2.4ghz but i overclocked it to 3.65ghz.
What makes a CPU good is the clock speed, cache, bus, and cores. In the case of intel, the new i7 have virtually 8 cores becuase of hyperthreading.

If your gonna build a new computer and wanna know bout CPU, from intel if you have a decent-high budget get an i7, they are hte fastest out there. If your on a a budget, either get an i5 from intel or an AMD phenom II, i recommend intel though cuz they are faster so far. You need to get compatible motherboard and a decent power supply so it can atleast power a decent graphics card.

Q9550 (This thing is pretty fast cuz of the large cache and is actually faster than the new AMD phenom II in most cases + its running at a lower clock which is all the better) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115041

i5 750 (Cheaper than a Q9550 but would require an entire upgrade) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115041

i7 920 (This thing is fast and will last quite a while, especially if you overclock to around 4.0 ghz) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

If your computer is a Dell, Acer, HP etc you'll have problems upgrading the processor. Check what CPU's the motherboard supports FIRST before you buy another CPU. Also make sure you have good enough cooling for that CPU.

You'll be looking for a socket 775 CPU from Intel.

+1 except all 775 chipsets do not support all 775 processors. We would need to know your current motherboard model to suggest an appropriate processor.

Is there a way to find out what motherboard I have through dxdiag or some other kind of software? Also my computer is a Compaq-Presario. I'm not sure there is much you can do with it but it had one PCI-E slot so I stuck a nVidia GeForce 8600 GT in there.

As much as I would like to get a new computer I have this one for now so I'm hoping I can put a decent upgrade in there to get more out of it.

Download a program called CPU-Z, its not really an install just a program that runs and starts up once downloaded from the website. Its not a virus or anything and doesn't require an install if im mistaken. I use this all the time, its a great little program.

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

This should give information of the CPU, motherboard and almost every component of your computer thats connected to the motherboard. Then try to copy and paste wat ur seeing onto a reply for us to see and examine.

it does require an install, but it takes only a few seconds

Here's the motherboard specs:
Manufacturer: MSI
Model: Boston 1.0
Chipset: Intel P35/G33/G31 Rev.10
Southbridge Intel 82891GH (ICH7/R)
LPCIO: NS NS

Yea ur running a PCI-e 1.0 slot probably x16 since its only a single slot and a socket 775 motherboard.

Im not sure if your motherboard supports like the Core 2 Quads and 45nm Quads but it should. You can definitly pop in any graphics card you want as long as you have a good enough power supply.

None of the new cards will bottleneck from that PCI-e 1.0 x16 as long as its running x16......the only performance drop you will see even when using something like a GTX 295 or 4870x2/upcoming 5870x2 will probably be a few frames like 2-5 FPS no big deal...they barely use up all the bandwith of the PCI-e 1.0 x16 though they are getting close to nowadays

Sorry for bringing up something old but I was thinking about possibly getting this:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX24676(ME).aspx?curtab=2

I'm not sure though, can someone tell me if it will work in my motherboard I stated above?

-.- sigh no :facewall:
lol with the motherboard you currently have from what i remember, you need an INTEL CPU, you can't go to AMD. Your motherboard only supports INTEL SOCKET 775 CPU'S.
BASICALLY YOU CAN ONLY GET INTEL CORE 2 DUO or CORE 2 QUAD WITH YOUR CURRENT MOBO

sry for the caps just wanted to like make it stand out.

wtf is a boston 1.0 - thats all the info you got on your motherboard?
the only thing i can find searching that is this..http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-OEM-MSI-MS-7525-Boston-Motherboard-464517-001-G31-PC_W0QQitemZ250515770988QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20091018?IMSfp=TL091018134003r13080
and it mentions what cpus are compatible, if that is your motherboard...
