It's nearly that time of the year where all the big budget heavily hyped games get puked out onto the market, and as much as I'd love to play most of them and review them, we're in a financial rut that isn't going to end any time soon. While I haven't been able to write as many reviews as I would have liked to for this year and last, I have posted a few. I'm kinda stuck in 2008 still, so that's why I'm including that year here. So what were your favourite games of this year and last?
Last year, my top was Saints Row 2. I didn't post a review on the eGO forums mainly because I was a little too lazy to censor the bevvy of curse words and relatively immature sex and violence jokes to make it appropriate for this site, but my final review score was a 9.8, only detracting points in the graphics and story department. I'm still playing the crap out of that sucker and so has my wife, we both love it, as crass and inane as it is its just fun as hell. I thank Yahtzee for actually RECOMMENDING a game for once.
This year, my top game would probably have to be Prototype. My review should still be on the forums here, but Prototype just kicks all sorts of ass. While Red Faction: Guerrilla came close for this spot as well, and was certainly a bigger surprise than Prototype considering the fact I didn't like the first two red factions and I didn't expect much until reading a few reviews, but in the end I still had more fun with Prototype, but only by a little bit.
Two other games that came close to winning me over last year were Dead Space and Gears of War 2. Dead Space came out of nowhere and surprised me, and it was infinitely 10,000x better than Resident Evil 4/5. Feel free to flame me, but RE4 and RE5, while not 'bad,' are overrated. Then again I feel that way about most RE games save for #2. I don't know why everyone is so picky about GoW 2, I thought it was a great sequel, and managed to be even better than the first. The only thing I disliked about GoW 2 was them switching out the convenient server lists and adopting the retarded matchmaking system. Seriously, matchmaking has got to stop. The campaign was awesome though. Although Saints Row 2 beat it out, GTA IV and its surprisingly good DLC pack, Lost and the Damned, were great as well. I think the DLC pack really shocked me, considering how short and thin most DLC packs are, yet Lost and Damned actually set an example for how DLC should be in my mind, as it was long enough to be a true expansion pack, something thats sorely been missing in games. I'm definitely looking forward to Ballad of Gay Tony, if it restarts the GTA IV experience for me like L&D did, I'll be happy.
Looking downwards, last year marked the release of Silent Hill Homecoming which pissed me off. I know some people liked it and I know that others said it would be better without the Silent Hill brand name attached, I felt either way it was crap. The story was crap, the characters were crap, and the gameplay was crap. The game looked nice, and as always Akira Yamaoka contributed a great soundtrack, but everything else suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked. Although I did change my mind after giving the game more of a chance, I initially hated Fallout 3 and while I do like it a little better now, I still think its overrated. Its a fun game, but I wouldn't give it more than an 7.9. I'd also like to call out a few people on the forum who called me an idiot because I didn't like the game at first, and I remember specifically seeing a comment: "As I've said to people who have opinions that aren't mine: You're an idiot and you are wrong." which is an incredulously stupid comment because whoever that was didn't grasp the true concept of an 'opinion.' Another game that was rather low on the list was the new Prince of Persia, which really, REALLY disappointed me. It looked good, and had good controls.... but that was it.
So yeah, basically just share your thoughts on your favourite games of 2008/2009
