Paranormal Activity: Review.

my friends have all said it's great and genuinely scary.
one of my friends even went to see it a second time!

Well it's more than just that. Paranormal Activity is poised to be the most successful independent film of all time. The budget of the film is somewhere in the neighborhood of $15,000...and it uses it effectively. So far it's made $12.5 mi.

The scares are all great and the payoff is amazing. But what really got me was once the film started to get going it never stopped. There is a sense a crazy sense of dread over the last half-hour or so. This is easily one of best horror movies of the decade.

now so far it has grossed $33 million, wow and only $15,000 to make, thats a pretty good return on the money.

Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way but this movie was WAYYYYY overrated. But the marketing ploy definetly worked. They created exclusivity by only releasing it in select theaters and usually for only one showing a day. Then everyone demanded it and now everyone wants to see what all the hype is about. I can tell you, this movie is not that great. The worst part is, the trailer shows every single scary part except for one. So basically, if you've seen the trailer, you've seen all the scary parts. I was VERY disappointed in this movie. Oh and it has a stupid ending. Again, this is my opinion and if I had to do it over, I would have saved the $5 x 2 I spent.

Agreed it has easily the worst trailer of all time...basically giving away everything.

The word of mouth advertising thing worked far better than Paramount expected. The initial reason for the advertising campaign was the limited advertising budget on the film.

...and the Hollywood ending. After Paramount purchased they the property forced the film makers to re-shoot the final scene to give it one final scare, which is actually pretty effective. Interesting fun fact: the theatrical ending was Steven Spielberg idea. The original ending was more on the same tone as the rest of the film, not scary, but eerie and unsettling.

Good info! It sucks that once again, Hollywood ruins another non-Hollywood made movie. But thinking about it, I don't know that there was any other choice. They had to create interest so people would see this movie but how could they without that trailer, you know? I don't know if a "toned-down" trailer would have had the same effect. So maybe Hollywood and the makers each created a problem. The first problem is that there really isn't that much scary content in the movie to begin with, and the second problem is that Hollywood used all that content in the trailer to get people to see it. Thus creating a "not so great" movie experience.
 
i really wanna see that movie it seems like it would be pretty scary i think ill go tomorrow :s
 
Thought it was really good. But I also thought it could have been longer!
 
Wen't and saw it.

First off, let me tell you, I am the biggest horror movie fan ever. But this movie was god awful. Only startled me once. Me, and everyone else in the theater, spent more time laughing and joking then anything else.
 
Cant blame em for hyping it, they got all your money and they're filthy rich now.

yeah, now it is the most profitable movie of all time *ahem* surpassing the blair witch project , $66 million on 15k investment aint bad
 
I saw it. it was amazing. even though i don't normally believe in that "crap" part of me was like "What if?"
the only thing that ruined it for me was the moron teenagers scattered around the theatre that were talking, and giggling, and texting.
they were lucky they were on the other side of the theatre.... and not right beside me.
 
ehhh it was ok. Honestly, the stuff that happens, really creepy... but scary enough to leave the theater? absolutely not.
