dying without honor

heres the way i look at it.

I and many other people spend at times hours in a week to gain 100 points or so, depending on where you are on the point system. When a round ends, you still lose the same amount of points for dying, yet you cannot shoot back.

I know in my case, I definitely do not deserve to lose points when I cannot even shoot back. Thats like saying its my fault i didnt strike a home run, without having a damn bat.

You guys talk about fairness, honor and such, but its killing someone whos unarmed. Its cheap, cowardly, etc. I could go on and on with this subject. I do agree that switching to spec is wrong, but suiciding after a round finishes is not.

You guys STEALING the points, yes stealing, are just as guilty, if not more so than those trying to avoid getting robbed.

I dont play dods for points. If I did, id have quit a long time ago. But I sure as hell dont play to have them stolen by someone who I cant shoot back at and who usually cant take me on when i actually have a gun.

my 2 cents, think want you wish. On a quick side note, i notice a lot of people agreeing with Goomba, but honestly, few people replying to this thread have many points to lose in the first place.

if you guys think shooting unarmed persons is fair play, then you need to reread the definitetion of fair.

I think the best alternative would be reducing the endround time. Ive seen it done on many servers, where the after round lasts maybe 5 seconds or so before the map resets.

You might also benefit from looking up the definition of competition. Guns vs no guns is hardly competetive. And if you guys dont care about points like you all say, then why complain about the competetiveness?

I dont see any of you playing FDL or Fragdods...

Getting massacred by the winning team is part of the game. I see it as a reward for the winning team and inspiration to win for the losing team. The only way i can truly respect anyone for specing or suiciding (same thing) is if they dont take part in the killing of the losing team when they win.

Now ask yourself this; do you kill the poor unarmed axis when you win?

You cant play on both sides of the fence, calling the actions of other players cowardly when you hop into a safety blanket to get away from getting killed ONCE at the end of the round. If you want the glory kills then face the music like a man (or woman).

I find it ironic that you took the time to look up peoples points in this thread when you made it clear in your response that you are not concerned with them. To me it sounds like you are worried about losing them and its okay to be afraid. As for the rest of us, we will take our shovelings with pride. By the way the reason most of us side with Goomba (and have low points) is because we know he only complains when he has reason to, now if he were to make a Led Zeppelin bashing thread id be on him like a fly on poop.

Well put Stormy. Blue, you missed the point. I talk about fairness in following the rules of the game. The game is what it is. You play one side or the other, you win or lose. If people bail at the end of the game after losing fine, but they are hypocrites if they shoot people at the end when their team wins. It is simple ethics.
 
It is VERY difficult to maintain points above 5k, at least for me anyway. I think Blue makes a great point. Maybe many of you do not care about points, but many others do. For me it is a way to evaluate my skill at DoD. I think the spirit of eGO is that we acknowledge different points of view and try to protect them all in fair manner. For many of you it is fun to 'just have fun' and not worry about points. For others it is fun to manage their skill score and gain a higher rank. Both sides are correct. In the end I do think Goomba is correct, switching to spec is wrong.

Like I said, "it complicated'. (it seems a bit narcisitc to quote myself) :)

p.s. I question the wisdom of any points system that grants a new guy with a thompson 25 points for me and yet gives me 2 for him/her, that's just nuts...tweak that ludicrus point spread and I think you fix some problems
 
I think if you won the round, you should get to reap the benefits of the other team "surrendering".

im not playing both sides of a fence. yes i do kill people after the round, but I could care less if they suicide or get away. Im not saying you shouldnt be able to kill people after the round (and im not sure where you got that idea from), but that suiciding should not be a problem.

Also, I did not look up peoples' points, but I am familiar with the skill levels of people who I have played with, which are most people replying to this thread, including yourself.

I did not miss the point, I simply do not agree with it.

A while back we had our instances set up so that after the round was won, points were turned off. Recently, after a steam update broke all our mods, points are kept on after the round is won. This is a flaw in the stats design. I, along with others, should not have to suffer from it.

Now when you say "if people bail at the end...", I want to make sure you understand I am not saying going to spectator is acceptable. I am totally against that adn I think it should be kickable, etc. However, suiciding after the round is finished is not unfair in any way. You might argue then that suiciding is cheap. But please, please weigh the "cheapness" of suiciding against losing 25 points to some inexperienced fool without a chance to fight back. Which is more cheap?

Boyle I know you have a substancial amount of points because you are an experienced player. I dont know if you care about points, but if you did, which would make you more frustrated?

I understand most people in this thread do not care for points and thats totally fine. But those who care about points are only trying to become better at the game. And it saddens me when you guys criticize those who spends hours and hours of frustration and hard work to get where they are.

The jersey man yet again is right ive been noticing this alot lately on the DONNER server i wont mention names but it became irritating watching PLAYER X goes spec....Player X joins US team (or German) ive seen several people get a perma ban for this and to me it would follow the W/K/B rule...

and this is a random question... at the end of the round isnt the point system turned off? so if your team looses you dont loose any points till the new match?
 
after reading over posts again, you guys all seem to misunderstand the difference between suiciding and moving to spectator.

moving to spectator is not considered suiciding because you dont actually die in the process. Im betting this is what most of you mean anyways and im hoping this is a misunderstanding.

it used to be that way, but due to a glitch in the points system (or a lack of code) stats are active at ALL times, even after the round ends.

What are you saying, that i have low points?!?!?! Is that what youre trying to say?!?!?! Are you saying my skill level and those of everyone in this thread is that of a chimp?!?!

Nah im just messing, i dont know about your skill comment... But i do know two things:

1. Lead by example. As an eGO we should show both pubs and fellow clan members how to act. While switching to spec is not against the rules it isnt exactly model behavior.

2. Points are not relalive to skill. Hell im not a mathematician and i dont know how the mysterious HLX gods handle the points. But i can tell you this; when i run around punching people in the face and shoving nades down their throats (you guys gotta get that mod) im out there capping flags, and winning rounds. Even if i dont have a million points i usually end up on the winning team because of my team and then i kill the people with more points than me (if they dont switch to spec).

I tend to find the people with the highest points are snipers, that like to hide in places that limit their exposeure to threats resulting in a higher kill to death ratio. Although these players serve a function in the game, the skills of other players arent properly compensated for their role in capturing objectives, which is the goal in most maps.

As for the suiciding: The destination is what matters. When you switch to spec or kill yourself you still end up in a zone were the winning team cant hurt you. Same end result.

right, like ive said about three times now, is that im against moving to spec. But killing yourself gets you killed all the same, you just dont lose your points.

I really hate when you win a game the guys join Spectators and then rejoin that makes me mad
 
Semantics. I say typing in kill in the console and clicking on spec is the same thing. In both cases you are still just trying to escape the wrath of the winning team. If you hide you at least have a chance at survival while at the same time you keep the respect of other players.
 
I just did a little experiment. There is nothing like empirical data to help further a debate. I just played Kalt, primetime CDT, with a full server. I only used the support kits. I had to change sides once to even the teams so I used a mix of STG and BAR. Here are my results:

kills: 55
deaths: 24

I lost 2 positions.
I lost 93 points.

There is nothing 'fair' about that result. It is this kind of mathematical nonsense that turns normal players into 'stat whores', or some other pejorative term. The stat system is horribly out of whack and needs a serious tweak.

I'd like to point out another flaw. Look at the first page of all our players. Look at total kills and deaths. The current system rewards conservative play and penalizes aggressive behavior.
 
I try to Run behind all the winning team to make them think its their teammates so I don't get killed LOL its fun but Usually only works 1 out of 10 times LOL. I love the Grudge match System LOL Its like when Patje kills me "Numerous" times He becomes my sole mission to get By Knife or Shovel :D I love Redemption by Melee weapons :D its fun.
 
if people go to spec at end of round im kicking them. ill admin my way, you admin yours
