dying without honor

I just did a little experiment. There is nothing like empirical data to help further a debate. I just played Kalt, primetime CDT, with a full server. I only used the support kits. I had to change sides once to even the teams so I used a mix of STG and BAR. Here are my results:

kills: 55
deaths: 24

I lost 2 positions.
I lost 93 points.

There is nothing 'fair' about that result. It is this kind of mathematical nonsense that turns normal players into 'stat whores', or some other pejorative term. The stat system is horribly out of whack and needs a serious tweak.

I'd like to point out another flaw. Look at the first page of all our players. Look at total kills and deaths. The current system rewards conservative play and penalizes aggressive behavior.

The stat system rewards high KDR, high cap flags, or a hybrid of the two. It's independent of aggressive or passive behavior because some passive players aren't good at all and some aggressive players are ranked high. You can't rank players based on how many kills they have and you can't determine which players with high KDRs are passive or aggressive, so how do you fix stats? Should points be modified by your KPM or SPK? Should they rank players by class? By weapon? I just can't envision a stat system that would accurately rank players without bringing the servers to their knees with formulaic algorithms.

lol @ another stats debate.
@ this thread: it's silly that this is even an issue, stats were turned off for a reason after round wins b4 the update broke it, i simply find it hard to believe that there is not a fix for this yet.

It is the non-manly way of saving some points. I usually politely ask the offenders to not do it again and that takes care of it.

First I will start off saying that I have never done this. Second, to some of us, that after win kill is losing 25 points. It's kinda expensive seeing as all you can do is stare at the person (word person replaces bad word) as they just knife you and you can't do anything about it. Of course this could be easily remedied by fixing the mod that turns the points off after the team has won and also the one that turned the players into funny objects. I miss being a boat in the hotel.

I like hiding after a round...I think running away/hiding or jumping around trying to not get slaughtered by the hordes of enemies is pretty fun in my opinion.

guys, i didnt mean to start a big thing about stats. i was only expressing my opinion on what goes on after round is won. it wasnt suppose to be about the point system. it was about taking your lumps when you lose. sorry again if my threads start such a debate.

Ron, the stat system can be fixed and its easy to do. Simply lower the weighted differential that subtracts points from one player and adds to another. The maximum right now is 25. That should be lowered. The current minimum a player can get for a kill and loose is 2 points. The maximum is 25. This is a delta of 23 points! That is ludicrous. The max should be lowered to something in the range of 16-18 points.

As it stands right now I have to kill 13 2-point players to gain 1 point. This is insane. I think even you have a difficult time killing 13 in a row before dying. I know I do (and yer better than me, that's ok too) :)

Goomba, your arguement is, at its core, one of stats. The only reason people are moving to spec at the end of rounds is to avoid stat-loss. The core of the behvoir is not the act, it is the motivation. If we fix the motive behind the behavior then we solve the problem. Applying the w/k/b protocol to this issue is a short-term fix. I suggest that if we fix the unfair stat system we solve the problem. I do acknowledge that even with a modified stat system some may still move to spec to avoid loosing any points. This we can fix with enforcement.

when playing DoD, i hate the guys that kill themselves or go spectate when a round is won. they are afraid of losing there points an that pisses the hell out of me. die like a man, or hide. cause if i see a patern, im kicking people:cursing:

I agree with you Goomba, a suggestion though, why don't they just ignore HLStats after rounds? I mean, i've been on servers that do that.

Yep, me and my bud DoN't BaCkStAb Me BrO got mad because when i killed him i got 25 points and when he killed me he got 2. lol.

Hey i got an idea... this is a game its ment to be played and to have fun if all you guys care about is stats then why dont we turn them off? i like seeing where im at compared to other player but if its gonna cause half the clan to turn against eachother get rid of them

PLAY TO HAVE FUN
who cares

Re: dying and point system

I think they should do away with the point system ..... TOO MANY players care about it. And it affects the game play. And least don't show the stats constantly or when someone has taken 20 points from you, it changes peoples gaming style so they won't play as hard so they won't loose their precious points.

I love stats, just not the points that result. I like how they measure my game. Word of mouth is great, but when it comes to legacy I like having something to point to and say "that is me, that is how I play." That, to me, is the usefulness of statistics. Stats are part of DoDs now; people are competitive and they want to compete. Not to mention removing stats from our servers is going to drive activity down.

If you don't want to see yourself lose points or be ranked, type this in global say chat:
Code:
hlx_display 0

You won't see any point notifications and your rank on the stats website will be "HIDDEN". Everybody else, just do your thing, and remember nobody really cares about what the stats say about you, it's what everybody else says about you that matters. I'd rather be feared by all at rank 50 than be a mediocre player who happens to be ranked first. If you build a name for yourself as a formidable opponent to all, and the points system doesn't reflect this then, well, you've just undermined the points system and it really becomes irrelevant.

I never realized that is what some folks were doing. Goomba explained it to me, as he ususally does. :)

It does seem kinda cheap. It can be very disruptive. I logged in one minute after one of our members had just pissed-off the entire Wermacht team by doing this over and over. I had to warn several people and kick a few of them. They were cursing like mad they were so upset. This person created one helluva mess that I had to clean up. I did not appreciate it.

On the other side of the arguement the points system is very cruel. I tend to obsess a little too much over them myself. I agree with the 'just have fun' philosophy but I also know that points matter, maybe not as much as many think; but be honest, we all pay attention to the players with 7000+ points. We also know that there are some very good players below that mark.

Its complicated.

Agreed, I'm usually dead as the round ends because I rush into the fray, but it IS aggravating to lose points at the end of a round when you can't fire. Isn't the glory of murdering the losers enough without the point taking?

The points system is one facet of DoD:S that I enjoy. If you remove them you diminish my enjoyment of the game. I am happy for those of you who 'do not care' about your 'precious stats'. I am competative by nature and I use my skill rank as one measure of how well I am doing. I also use face to face encounters to again measure myself against the best (like Ron,IO, DUality, Kirk, Hill Jack, Rubberbandman and many others).

I like gaming here for many reason. Stats is just one of them.

lmao umm everyone just chill.
This is what I was talking about before...everyone is different, everyone plays the game how they like to play it. I never worry about points but that don't mean I hate the guy who worries about points (each to their own)
Just play the game, have fun. If the guy suicides then you have options on what you would like to do.

TAZ out

P.S also part of the discussion is learning from others, so glad the thread was started.

+1 goes to Dio.

Why don't they just turn off the point system after the ends of rounds?

Why don't they just turn off the point system after the ends of rounds?

Because, like most things after the engine update a couple months ago, the capability to disable stats in-game was broken. I'm pretty sure they were using a sourcemod plugin (the official HLstatsX plugin actually) to make it happen and damn near everything sourcemod-related was broken by that update.

As usual, there's also a Perl script floating around out there to disable stat recording after a round ends but our technical team has way too much on their plates already. Our servers are still using the 1.2.2-developer version of sourcemod that was released a day or two after the engine update! Honestly I'm surprised more things don't work lol.

Ranking is based on who you kill and who kills you (and flag capping i know), so assume you're in a server and you go 100:10 sniping pushing and being amazing right? well how many of those people were really good? Usually I count like 0-5 people that are good in a server at any given time. I dont even bother doublestrafing a corner unless there's an mg or Kirk in the server (that's a compliment kirk ;) ) So what I'm saying is, an even better way to judge yourself would be to play a server where everyone in it is good. That's how i measure my game, any other time and I'm just playing for fun listening to music or whatever.

Everybody else, just do your thing, and remember nobody really cares about what the stats say about you, it's what everybody else says about you that matters. love that part, alot of people care too much about ranking now (or maybe I didn't notice it before (or maybe FoX.19 made trying to be #1 not cool lol))

Seriously tho, I think people care too much about ranking because there isn't really anything else to be competitive in. SLDL season starting again soon...I'm just saying
