Borderland Co-op Fix

I decided to put this here for people who are having troubles getting a co-op game going in Borderlands.

Well the story goes I finally get the game to work. Been playing alot of solo play but I wanted to play some co-op. I create a Game Spy account, added my buddy through Game Spy click host a game and invite him... 3hrs later and I have yet to get the co-op game going. I tried EVERYTHING to get this game going.

So off to google I went to try and solve this dilemma. Cheeking online only turned up forwarding ports yada yada yada junk I did not understand. But through all the junk popped up a life line.


Gameranger

A quick fix till a patch is released to hopefully fix the broken co-op in Borderlands.

All you have to do is you and your friends have to do is download Gameranger. and create an account. Gameranger auto detects your Borderlands game. Make sure to add your friends in Gameranger. Host a game via File / Host Game / Then enter the information to set up the game (Note: Make sure to have the "Late Joiners cheeked" "Friends Only Cheeked" So your friends and only your friends can join.

Now once all your friends join click the "START" button and it will automatically start the game for you guys. All you have to do is pick your guys in the menu of Borderlands and click the "START" button in game.


I hope this helps you guys. The game is a BLAST playing with someone you know.

NOTE: This fix also works for playing friends who did not download the game from Steam (hard copy of the game from a brick and mortar store)

I doubt the patch will fix the issue, because the issue with the co-op is that your router is blocking the ports it needs to connect, You need to forward those ports to host/player co-op better. The list on the steam forums.

Hopefully I won't amaze onlookers with my lack of knowledge, despite being seen as a pretty knowledgable guy with PC's.

This is just a guide for people who don't quite understand port forwarding. I found it very confusing at first but now understand it. But I find using a 3rd party program to auto do it for you alot easier. I hope a patch will auto forward ports in the future because it gets complicated for people who don't understand port forwarding.

Gameranger is like a software router in the way it works. You host the game, it switches the port info around for you so other Gameranger folks can connect.

If the Gameranger ports are blocked, you're still up the creek without a paddle though.

I'm not computer savvy nor computer illiterate.

Ya if Gamerangers ports are blocked this fix would not work but for me and alot of my friends it worked without a hitch.

Port forwarding is pretty simple to understand. The terminology is probably what's turning you off, making you think its more complicated than it really is.

www.portforward.com is probably the best website I know that helps walk you through the port forwarding process with YOUR SPECIFIC ROUTER.

Here's an example with a common Linksys WRT54Gv2 router:

There are custom firmwares for routers which make them even easier to navigate but have more robust configuration utilities.

You can also use Hamachi, which eGO has a offical network for.

For those who wish to port forward, the ports you will need are:

TCP
7777, 28900, 28910

UDP
7777, 27900

Hamachi is great and I was also thinking of that as well. I used to use it for setting up games I was having port forwarding issues with. Thanks for the reminder Whiskey.

The point isn't that Port Forwarding is hard, it's that this fix is easy.
