What are some good options for in-game video capture program? A really good freeware would be great but I am willing to spend up to $20ish.

Honestly, your best option for Source games is to record a demo. If you want to record other games, then personally I prefer fraps.

Recording a demo is your best bet for quality in source games, but if you don't want the extra hassle, Fraps is generally regarded as the predominant choice, at least as I have heard. I use fraps occasionally, and it works just fine.

The only freeware video game recording system I know of is Taksi. It's an open source recorder. I'm pretty sure the project has been abandoned for quite some time, and the program is quite buggy, but I have actually gotten some good stuff out of it far back in the past. I'd say Taksi is more trouble than it's worth though due to the bugs, and its lack of recent updates. Fraps would probably be worth it.

Hypercam is also another option. Its made specifically for screen capture only.
No cap on time as far as I can remember from my usage. You get stuck with the unregistered hypercam label in the corner or you can pay $39 for an unrestricted version. Dunno what the difference is.
Its not the best quality or anything but if your just looking for recording your play for fun it should work.

If I remember correctly Fraps has a cap of 30 seconds of video using the free version. Their site unfortunately is very vague on what the features are of the free version and the paid version. Paid version is $37.

I have a version of fraps that I could give you alrdy payed for...I dont know if I am allowed to do that though, anybody know?

fraps or wegame(free)

but for source games recored a demo than use the recordmovie command after to make it into a video file. or you could also just dump frames and audio and use a video editor to peace them back together this method has no affect on gameplay and allows you to make videos at a higher quality than your computer can handle with a perfect framerate

you could actually give trade or sell it to him but it wouldn't be legal to give him a copy and keep a copy but possible if you don't care about legal stuff but at the point why not just pirate it.

considering that we game has a store and community + the video recording and a place to up load them i think it would be pretty sweet if valve would get there own recorder that would be part of steam and the steam game overlay.
