What i dont get... is why do some people always get pocket medics, and sometimes even 2?

Example:
I was once on Madhatter's team, and he had 2 krit medics with him. I asked for one of the medics to follow me... but neither of them would. I end up having to play more carefully and death on the front lines is more common on a full server without a medic. (and we all know how we all hate dying =P )

I mean, really?! Its not like I'm a bad player.... or am I?

And also,
times are when I request a medic, but no one is willing to switch to one. But when someone else asks for a medic, someone else happily medics them.

Am I that bad of a player?

I mean... c'mon. I'm not THAT bad......

What gets me is why certain people would have pocket medics, but I rarely do. Utoma[tcf] medics me sometimes. But i know him irl.... >.>

It's just part of the game? Some medics just team up well with certain people. They're certainly under no obligation to spread their healing around unless they want to. Everyone has their own style of play.

yes yes, i know

but it just makes me cry inside.... just a lil.

No medic love for me =(

but for all those medics who have healed me, you get my love <3

If a medic does that, he sucks as a medic since he's not playing it right in the first place.

He's not accomplished his main objectives as a medic, which means that he's not worth your time protecting.

I feel your pain, many a time I have had to go solo heavy because there were three medics on my team healing one heavy.

However I believe it has made me a better played, I easily get a high k/d without a medic now.

word.

I think I know the secret. I'll promise them candy and cookies if they heal me =]

or a bite of my sanvich if i'm a heavy.

Hey, I never get a medic unless I acquire one during the game. I've had some of my best days without a pocket medic. Unfortunately that all ends when you guys come along with your stupid pocket medics. Why can't you maggots kill me one on one for once. Especially you carmine. *shakes fist wildly while eating some delicious ramen soup*

It sorta depends on how you're playing and what you're playing.

I'm generally a Scout, so I don't really expect Medics to stick with me, but every once in a while if I save a Medic he'll pocket me for a while and then we go on killing sprees.

Try saving a Medic, he might stick with ya.

I think you answered your own question. An unknown pocket medic is unlikely to happen upon you unless you become the pocket medic to someone else.

Or you could go spy and disguise as the person who had the pocket medic. That way you can make them heal you without realizing it (And maybe steal their uber; I love doing that heheheh).

P.S. What server do you play on? I always have to be medic anyway, it's nice to follow one person who knows what they're doing and doesn't go sniper, engy, or spy.

yup, what they said.

if you think about it, not having a pocket medic will make you a better player. you learn to survive without one, making you better than a person with a constant health supply.

only thing that bothers me are those medics that watch you burn to death.. mhmm makes me wanna go to the opposite team just to kill them :d

From now on when we play together I'll try to be your pocket medic - that is if you play as either Demo, Soldier, Heavy or Pyro.

Oh I forgot I charge for my medical services.
Don't worry I'll bill your Medical Insurance Provider... ;-)

P.S. You will find me at the Egypt and PL servers most of the time. Sorry no BlackMesa for me....

People with pocket medics are normally people that are 1. friends irl, 2. Play together on a constant basis, 3. Someone just looking for a good person to gain points from. Lots of people that do the pocket medic combo though are normally people who play together on a constant basis and those 2 generally have there own type of playing style. Not that they dont love you, just tending to stick with there buddy ;)

Feather, I can attest with first hand experience, you are not a bad player. I think my k/d with you is about 1:9000.

I do understand your pain though. I have three thoughts on it:
1) I think many times, friends medic each other for the joy of the gaming experience with a friend. You got your buddy chattin' it up and having fun. That's a good way to enjoy the game. "Quicher cryin' over there and die wouldya?!"

B)You can't force people to play as part of the team, when they want to play solo (or medi-paired) which means watching you burn to agonizing death on their lap.

3rd) I was wondering just last night; do the Heavies with the life-time-warranty surgically-attached medics ever feel bad for those of us with 1/3 the health and no built-in fountain of youth? Meh, probably not...

It just happens like that during the game. If you are not on top of the boards you will seldom get a medic unless that medic knows you are good. Example, few days ago on mesa I was in the middle of the score board and Dave the Great was medic and started healing me while I was demo and literally I shot up to first place topping the boards and staying there with 20 points more than the 2nd place. It just depends on the medic imo.

Pretty much everything has been covered here so far. Whenever I got medic, I heal those who I find good or great players to begin with. Honestly, there's no point in sticking with a bad player that gets himself or both of you killed constantly. Healing a good player who gets kills, protects your behind and isn't completely suicidal is a good person to team with.

I'm just speaking for myself here now, but I do try to tag along with different people from time to time, just to give them a chance, or if I get them to do something I want to do as well. Take BM for one, I love to go spawn camping, pretty much no matter what class, and if I find someone who's doing it already, I tag along with him. Simple as that.

I play medic a lot. It's a bloody job but somebody has to do it. I still have few enough hours that I do not consider myself an expert.

  1. When you want to be healed press your (Medic!) key. By default this is "e".
  2. Go looking for a medic or find a safe place to hole up and put your back to a wall, preferably a corner. Most medics will be looking for you. Use your mic and tell the medic where you are. The better job you do the more likely a medic is to show up. Medics do not have maps with GPS. They get an idea of the direction but not distance. They cannot see through walls.
  3. When you see the medic press your mic key and say hello. The medic will see the exclamation point and know you are not an enemy spy. (This is good advice whenever you approach a teammate. If they say hi back or just tap their mic key you know they are on your team).
  4. Medics should be trying to heal by the following priority:
    People on fire.
    People with red medic balloons.
    People with white medic balloons.
    Anyone else on their team.
It is rude to barge in the way of someone higher on the priority list than you. Politeness promotes healing.
    (Proven fact. Ask Florence Nightingale)
Spamming for a medic when you don't need one gets in the way of the medic healing your teammates who need it. Remember The Boy Who Cried Wolf? Karma is a stoned cold bit..ter person isn't it.
  5. When he sees you, the medic will try to lock on with his medigun. If you jump around and dodge left and right he will have a harder time doing this. If you're trying not to be targeted move forward and back instead of side to side relative to the medic. This makes you a harder target for snipers but still an easy target for the medic. If you stand too close to a medic he will not be able to lock on. Don't crowd the medic. If you can't see his head and feet you are probably crowding too close.
  6. Once he has locked on do not go zipping around a corner or through a doorway until you are healed. If you break the beam its on you.
  7. When he is healing you your top priority is to keep him alive. Because he can't defend himself while he's healing.
  8. Say thank you. Remember , politeness promotes healing.

Medics are prefered targets. It is much easier to take out a team who's medics are sterilizing their instruments back in spawn. Do whatever you can to keep the medics alive and they will return the favor.

If a medic is hurt don't use the healing packs. Let the medic use it and ask him to heal you.
If a medic has partnered with you remember to talk to him on your mic and listen for their warnings. If the medic knows what you intend it makes it easier for them to stay with you and watch your six.
When you warn someone with your mic say their name. "Pyro behind you!" may get everyone on your team killed when they turn to look. "Quaffer! Pyro!" gets my attention PDQ. Learn your teammates names and use them. (The harder it is to read your name the less help you will get. Kwa4 is short but too hard to read. Something to think about).

Many new players are encouraged to be medics to learn the game. Even a poor medic can be an asset to the team. If the medic seems clueless give him some advice. Some people might go out of their way to heal people who were helpful or nice to them. Imagine that.

The next time your jumping up and down weaving left and right running back and forth and complaining that the medic isn't healing you ask yourself this; when was the last time I healed him.

For the medics out there:

  1. Look around and watch the back of the guy you're healing. Give warning when the foe comes calling.
  2. Your primary weapons are your teammates.
  3. Remember your priorities. Healing people who are on fire or have red balloons should take precedence over preparing an uber or crit.
Healing other medics on your team is like doubling the power of your healing gun and increasing its range to infinity. If you don't heal other medics on your team who do you think is going to heal you?
Players with white balloons may be injured or may be spamming for an Uber.
Healing injured people charges your Uber and Crit faster than buffing up someone at full health.
Buffing or overhealing can bring your teammate from 100% to 150%. This means you can get a heavy up to 450 health! The effect is temporary and ramps down if you stop healing them. While you are healing you get points for assisting in kills.
  4. When you are dead and waiting to respawn you are not healing people. This is bad. Watch your health. Memorize the locations of medpacks and remember where the engineers have built dispensers. When you are showing red call for another medic. If you can find an out of the way spot you can hunker down and you will slowly regenerate. Blutsaugers take your enemies health and give it to you. The enemy will try to do something about that so learn to run backwards. Whenever possible heal from cover; around corners, crouched behind rocks and boxes, beside doorways, whatever you can find. It is very hard to backstab someone who has their back against a wall or tucked in corner. Unless of course you like the run from the spawn point to the front line.
  5. Don't stop moving. EVER. If you do, you will get sniped, backstabbed, or hurt very badly. Don't always look forward, turn around, jump, sidestep. If your back stays in one direction for more than 2 seconds, you will probably be the spies next victim.
  6. Be aware of your environment, know where the friendly dispensers and sentry guns are. They will save you. If you have a pyro chasing you, lead him into a sentry gun trap.
  7. Partners
Few things get the other teams attention like a heavy dragging a medic along behind him by his medigun beam like a pitbull yanking at a six year old holding its leash. Medics can effectively pair up with Heavies, Pyros, Soldiers and Demos. While only the Scout is faster than you, Soldiers and Demos can rocket and sticky jump and may leave you looking for another teammate. Scouts move too quick, Engineers have their own dispensers, Spies are loners, and snipers don't need you attracting attention to them. If your going to team with someone the key is communication. Tell your buddy to hold back when your healing or buffing someone else. Don't neglect others on your team just because your part of a buddy pair. If you're healing your buddy keep an eye out behind them and give warning.
  8. Ubers and Crits
Ubers give you and your uber partner eight seconds of invulnerability. Crits give your crit buddy a critical hit with every shot that hits a target. Crits do not get crits on structures, Sentry Guns, Teleports, Dispensers.
Save your ubers and crits for the team members that can do a lot of damage to a lot of the enemy. Heavies and Pyros fighting multiple opponents, Soldiers and Demos taking out sentry guns.
You can use an uber as a last ditch defense as you run away if you're going to die if you don't. If you die you lose the uber anyway but if your teammates are doing their job you shouldn't need to worry about your own health.
You don't have to use an uber or a crit the moment you get it.
Remember you only have eight seconds. Don't waste them running through a corridor to a fight. If a door closes between you and the guy you're healing you are no longer healing or Ubering him.
Once you've started an uber you can select different people to share it with by targeting them with your left mouse button. This is very important if the beam is broken, you can reaquire an uber partner, or change the uber to someone else who needs it. Do it quick, the clock is ticking.
When you and your partner are ubered you should run in front of the sentrygun and draw its fire. This let's your buddy concentrate on taking it out while you get knocked back by the sentryguns fire.
  9. Your syringe gun and blutsauger have plunging arcs. You can sometimes hit opponents that can't hit you. You can shoot over boxes and you can stand close to walls and drop your syringes into openings and onto ledges.
  10. There is a tweak for the medigun that lets you keep on healing without holding down the mouse button. Go to TF2 startup page. Select:
    Options
    Multiplayer Tab
    Advanced Button
Medigun continues healing without holding down fire button check box
One last bit of advice. It's a game. Have fun!

A word of thanks to all the constructive comments from my fellow german friends in white. I have tried to incorporate your ideas in this post. In some cases I have used your words verbatim. In some cases I have used my own. Regardless, your comments have made this a better thread and hopefully made me a better medic. Thank you!

Hope this helps

Well, I can't speak for all medics, but here's a few things that will get me to stay with you.

1. Be a good player - Most of your shots should be killing someone and you should be able to win a 1v1 fight with any other class (especially when you have a medic).

2. Protect/Defend me - If you come to my rescue before I'm your medic you'll at least earn yourself a trial run. If you continue to keep me alive then you'll get a preference over a "better" player that doesn't watch out for me.
-- Note: Sacrificing yourself for me earns you even more pts in my book. There have been times when I've had my partner and we come a round a corner into a group of soldiers/demos/heavies with medics; If you (attempt to) keep them busy and tell me to make an escape then you get a gold star.

3. Communicate and pay attention. I prefer for the guy I'm partnering with to have a mic, especially if it's a new partnership. The main reason being I can't predict your moves so for you to be able to communicate with me as we move around is a def +. If its someone I've partnered with a lot before then it doesn't matter as much as I can usually predict their moves.
-- Note: This also means learning my voice, so I can say "spy behind us" rather than "FeatherFrog, spy behind us." That extra second can easily cost me my life.

4. Trust me to know what I'm doing, and recognize I'm a medic for our whole team and not just you. I will pause to heal teammates if they need it.

Yeah when a medic and another player have good chemistry it's a lot of fun. Whenever I am medic I always find one player that I am doing well with and stick with them.

If I ever have a pocket Medic (Wow, this really makes Medics sound like some pets) I will make sure he heals any other people that are on low health and near us.

I dont have that much against pocket Medic combos, but they should heal other people. If there is a guy on low health next to you, your precious friend will not die if you dont heal him for 5 seconds.
