Steam not connecting

As of today only, when I try to open steam, it says UPDATING, then Cannot connect to steam network. I changed nothing from the last time I used steam, I tried restarting, and obviously, I AM connected to the internet. Steam is not down, as others are on.
(not blocked by firewall, etc)
Ideas?

Try these steps. They have helped others re-verify / update steam.

First, exit Steam if it is running.

Then, delete SteamUI.dll from your Steam directory.

Restart Steam, it should update when it finds the SteamUI.dll file isn't there.

Hopefully, this will jump-start Steam and get you up and running!

ive found that if you join a beta,
restart
then uncheck the beta
you should be good to go

What is steam_732897_assert_2009_11_18T1_25_24C0.mdmp?

There are like..20 of them in my steam foler

*.mdmp is a Memory Dump extension and serves to back-up running data during a program shutdown and memory dump. If your steam is restarting prematurely, those files are normal.
