So my HP laptop finally kicked the bucket last night after giving me nothing but trouble for the past 2 years. Was working on it and the power cut off and wouldnt turn back on and started to smell a pungent smoke from the fans of the laptop which is a bad sign. So i ll be in the market looking for a new a laptop and was wondering what brands you guys would recommend or have had good long lasting working with? I m not buying from HP ever again their laptops seem to run incredibly hot and the battery life degrades very quickly (my laptop was only getting 20 min on its high cap battery) . Not to mention HP's service is just awful. So my only two things to consider when suggesting laptops is...

1) I will not buy from HP again

and

2) I will not buy from Apple (overpriced and MacOS sucks)

other than that let me know what laptop brands have been good and what models or brands you would recommend.

Thats an opinion(and your entitled to it).....and the price is comparable to an alienware computer with the same configuration.

Anyway....HP is the biggest computer brand in the United States so if your booting them out then you don't have much of a selection. I had an HP and my first one broke 7 times in the first 6 months(basically hp had it more than me but, their warrenty covered everything and they eventually replaced it and that one has not broken since. My second HP did not break at all, so you might want to consider getting the newer models they work pretty good, seeing how you said yours was at least two years old.(so a dv5000-9000?).
Other than HP there is Sony, dell, and Acer. Sony is a good Brand and will work fine for your needs, dell in my opinion is the cheaper brand and with any of my 3 dells they were horrible and I ended up throwing away computers that were less than a year and a half old because all the problems they had, and their support was not good. Acer is a new brand and is kind of like one of those brands you have never heard of...I have never had one so I can't tell you.

Regardless whatever computer you buy you should get the accidental warranty its a good idea and you will most likely need it.

Acer

and of coarse in MY opinion the best

Also you can find any of those brands at Best buy, and the acers at walmart. I recommend buying them directly from the companies with their warranties.

Im leaning towards Sony or Acer at this point.

I just dont like the Macbooks. Yes I know I can put windows on them but for what they cost for all their hardware I can get cheaper with Sony or Acer not to mention I just dont like the style of the Macbook Pro how it looks and how it feels in my hand. also I have heard the metal can give you shocks and every mac i have run into the screen will hiss at you and has glare issues.

You are correct from time to time the static will build up and shock me, not much though just like a small sting....but my old dell did that at the speakers.

plus i just dont see what the hype is about them they have the same problems as other laptops. MacOS has security holes just like windows if not more. They can have the same components as dells or sonys and be more expensive. I guess if you like the MacOS software its good but personally I hate the MacOS and really dont like Apples warranties or support.

The sonys are nice and sony tends to be a good brand, for computers that is. You can get one pretty much everywhere and their warranty terms are decent.

If I were you I would get one then buy the warranty after a year, because it starts when you purchase warranty, Meaning it does not add on to the existing 1 year warranty it comes with.

So has anyone else had a Sony or Acer before?

I've had Acer before, and friends who have had Sony.

Both seemed awright: Sony seemed more of a 'style' thing; lighter, thinner, (pricier!) Acer was good for me; it was a basic work lappy that never had any issues.

I'm using an IBM Thinkpad these days and so far have no complaints with it. It's hands down the most 'solid' feeling one I've ever used and I love the keyboard.

Ouch, ive had 2 hp computers now, a laptop and desktop and have had little to no problems with them, but i ended up buying the more-expensive ones, not the cheap ones so thats probably why. Any ways asus and acer both make nice laptops. i dont care much for sony's. they make nice products, but more often than not they are ridiculously expensive.

how much was the thinkpad?

Thinkpad T500 around $1200 nicely equipped

- it's NOT a gaming or media oriented laptop, but it's fine for watching movies, playing music (the built-in speakers are rubbish, but w/headphones it's great) and games that aren't terribly demanding can be played. The ATI3650 isn't the latest or greatest, but it manages TF2.

Battery life is outstanding, I can squeeze over 8 hours out of it on minimal settings.

Very sturdy chassis; you can pick it up by the monitor with no give or bending at all. This is easily the toughest laptop I've ever owned. Not that I'd wanna toss it out of hotel window, but if I ever did, it would probably fair better than most 'media-oriented' Sony or HP laptops. Can't say anything about Dell laptops; I've never/will never own one of theirs...

Not sure how 'mobile' you need your laptop to be; if you just need something that's more portable than a desktop, you might consider one of the 'desktop replacement' types of laptops. The battery life isn't as good with those, but the specs are usually better.

My Specs:

My bro had a two HP's , one died after 3 months and the other is already overheating after a few months as well.

I have always loved ASUS' notebooks . Currently use the X83 which i got from best buy for $550 about a year ago and had everything i needed and more. core2 at 2.0ghz, 64 bit, 4gb Ram, 250HDD, DVDRW, 14.1", Geforce 9300m , 6 usb ports, HDMI, VGA, eSata port, REALLY long battery life . First got it , could go 4-5 hrs on a charge . A year later i still get 2-3 hrs with 10-12hr day usage.

Yesterday i bought the 16" ASUS K60 from bestbuy for $499 and that has pentium dual core at 2.1ghz, win 7 64bit, 4gb ram, 320 HDD, DVDRW . It is only lacking the HDMI however my wife will not need that. It is thin and light, well made. Look em up on there website.

I dont think anybody anywhere can beat Bestbuy's notebook prices. i do my research and look EVERYWHERE. For parts, newegg all the way.

Bottom line, really look into ASUS . Didn't see anyone mention them, i would like to see what others think of them.

HP does have one for $449 with DDR3 RAM - not a single store in the country had one in stock

originally wanted that for the wife for its size, 14.1 " screen but those are harder and harder to find these days .

Toshiba makes some nice stuff too,

i have a 14.1" satallite notebook the battery gets like 2hrs battery life and it has survived for almost 2 years now, overall it is a good product

at first i loved Toshiba's products . bought a sweet notebook for like 350 a few years back, the ASUS above is the one that actually replaced it . What turned me away from toshiba is the overall feel of it. opening and closing the lid feels clunky like its gonna fall apart . Plus i have read tons of reviews lately and some of those turned me away.

if you want gaming, Gateway or Asus make really good budget gaming laptops right now, both have a GTX 260m but Asus makes one with quad-core, i think i7 quad-core for really cheap compared to Alienware.

Alienware looks the best out of any laptop right now, macbooks can compete

Yea your entitled to your opinion about macs, i do agree that they are expensive tho....definitely not comparable to alienware for the same configuration...alienware is faster for the same price by a mile

sony/dell if you just want a regular everyday use laptop....or dell xps if you want a little more power.

I would prefer Gateway/Asus gaming laptops though due to their best pricer/performance ratio and their quality isn't too bad from what i've heard

this is because you spent $350 on a laptop, that is very little money, and in the world of PCs you DO get what you pay for, i spent $800 and the build quality is rock solid

I made an alienware m17x with the same configuration as mine and it was $20
less.....I have a 500gb drive btw....my sig is wrong

Actually its $25 more because usually (right now they're having a promotion) you have to pay for shipping
