The Velociraptors are nice. but I wouldn't waste my money on them when you can get a good SSD for a decent price these days. You dont need more than 32GB for an OS Drive/Partition. For Storage/Buckup, get a 640GB WD SATAII HDD or any decent external HDD.
 
yeah i was going to suggest that but some people dont want to set all that up. just seemed like he wanted one harddrive lol

velociraptors out preform SSD drives in write by a VAST margin, but lose out in the read portion but just a small margin, and are cheaper for the amount of storage. sorry but i don't see the hype in SSD yet, maybe in a couples years time when its more updated and mainstream so the price can come down, otherwise SSD is a waste of cash

edit: im actually having a hard time pulling up a more recent comparison, but i dunno...SSD is still just way too expensive, running about 500 bucks for 160GB. and the benefit of SSD is to have your programs run faster, but that doesn't help if you can't have your programs on the fast harddrive due to lack of storage

Serial Attached SCSI (server hard drives) outperform the raptors AND OUTLAST THEM.

You can get 2x 300gb 15k rpm SAS drives and put them on raid0

Which would be cheaper than the equivalent in SSD's. Though I do see a big market for SSD's in the near future

I'm going to tell you again... HOLD OFF on the video card.. if you want to buy all the other stuff go ahead, but the new 300 series will be out soon...
 
yeah dont get the ati atm cause if you want to wait the 300 will be awesome and if you dont want to buy the 300 then the ati will at least drop in price

i have yet to find a consumer mobo that supports SAS, sorry but sata is the way to go
 
ummmmmm sorry to rain on your Fermi parade but they aren't expected to come out till like atleast march of 2010 now from what i hear

They are having some issues, ATI plan on releasing even more mainstream GPU's in the meantime while Nvidia continues to delay

Yes the Fermi are going to be faster GPU cards than ATI supposedly atleast in the single-chip sector but i have a feeling they are also gonna cost a ton

As for your build, get a Quad-core, ATI 5850 is okay beats a GTX 285, and i will let hte debate over the velociraptor SSD go on......
Your paying way too much to not get a Quad-core IMHO, if your paying $1,400 you definitely have to get an i7
 
seriously. you shouldn't spend over $500 if you're just going to get a dual core.
 
save yourself some money, if you live near a microcenter get an i7 for 200 bucks (great deal IMO), and a x58 motherboard (i recommend EVGA or ASUS), which will be marginally more expensive, however it will be well worth the investment.
 
If you can, use Bing Cashback for some purchases (places like TigerDirect & SuperBiiz). If you use Bing's cashback, and buy stuff from those sites you can get some $$ back. Which, if your system is $1500, 8% cashback? You do the math.

Why a 320gb harddrive? My Macbook Pro (below) has more space, and so does my desktop with 2.5tb....

harddrives are very user defined. i only need max of like 160 but minimum of 80gb. im currently using 69.3gb but don't have all of my games installed. i do not store any music, videos or anything like that so ya...its all user defined.
