Star Trek Online

This game looks very bad..

you mean bad as in good, right?

I will be on during headstart and beyond. I will be playing either an Andorian Science Officer on a Science Vessel or an Alien Science Officer on said vessels.

Ships are to be named USS Hawking or USS Sagan, and will most likely be NX-900022-A and up (B, C, D).

Anyone here, feel free to add me to friends: @QuelessQuest

It'll be awhile before I can officaly get in the game since I'm rather poor but you can rest assured I'm gonna be there :)

He probably meant bad as in bad. I can't blame him though as I even have a great deal of concerns with STO despite loving the way they did space combat.

Outside of the major story arc missions, i.e. the really important missions, the content's repetitiveness is borderlining on the extreme.

Using the CO engine to create the game has create a very closed off feeling with space.
Space feels like it is chopped up into cubes known as space sector blocks and don't feel connected or vast at all.

The game is extremely linear and there's absolutely no feeling that you are exploring, finding new planets and going where no one has gone before. (every time I go to some supposedly unexplored piece of "wild space" for the "explore" missions, I end up going into an unknown system only to find out that there's a Federation base that's been there for years that is suddenly under attack by the Klingons. There are 3 or 4 different scenarios that they switch around to give the illusion of being unique but it fails all the way around.)

The story arcs are nice and decently made, but outside of that, the game content is extremely bland, repetitive, and feels more like COH or CO moreso than it does Star Trek.

Klingons are a complete disaster. No content whatsoever despite being promised in the past by Cryptic that they would be in the game and flush with content. Now they're strictly PvP-oriented and then in a patch leveling by way of PvP was nerfed so the only way for Klingons to level is now screwed.

One big complaint I hear from many people is that the game is all combat and nothing else and it is true. Even though the game is called Star Trek and we are playing as part of the Federation, with the all-out war atmosphere and the fact that 98% of the game is shoot first and warp out later, it feels more like we are part of the Terran Empire instead (yes I've looked up things on Memory Alpha). There's next to zero in the diplomacy department, only a few scattered missions here and there that attempt to show that you are capable of talking to someone and resolving differences through dialogue rather than shooting them with a phaser.

Cryptic made a terrible attempt at putting crafting in the game and it is virtually non-existent. Sure you scan and harvest anomalous readings to your hearts content, but face it, you're never going to use them because nothing worthwhile will ever come out of crafting but whites that are worse than everything under the sun that you'll loot by killing Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, etc. and by turning in PvP/exploration tokens.

I have hardcore Star Trek buddies that are going to get this simply because it's Star Trek and despite my many concerns (these were just the ones I could remember off the top of my head), I am going to play the game simply because of them, because I did really enjoy combat in space when I was in a group, and lastly, because there is nothing beyond this game to play until SW:TOR comes out.

Now I hope that Cryptic can somehow miraculously fix the majority of these problems but with the many limits of the very engine they used to create STO, I cannot see much of this being rectified at all. Here's to hoping that space combat at the very least stays unscathed and largely untweaked.

Lastly, I sincerely hope, specifically for those who did the lifetime sub that Cryptic pulls this off for them because I really cannot see how far STO can go with what they have shown and this is all coming from someone who was halfway through the Captain rank.

Simple as that. :facewall:

The game is far from perfect but its also far from bad. It has flaws but when compared to recent MMO releases like Aion, Champions, Warhammer and Age of Conan it is superior to them.

Superior just for the ship to ship combat. There is nothing else like it out there in MMO's, except maybe EVE but the similarities are supperfical at best. STO's space combat is spectacular. It captures the look, sound and feel of the Star Trek franchise, not that JJ Abrams dumbed down crap.

The episodes are as well written as any quest line or story arc in any other MMO and they are close to some of the content of single-player RPGs. The Fleet actions are fun, the patrol missions diverting, the defend the sector stuff is ok and the exploration system is ok and its supposed to get better. I hope it does.

The pvp is fun, when it works, but its not on the scale of DaoC's RvR. It feels small. I understand why they are instancing, the game runs smoother, but it does take away from the grand scale of events usually associated with Trek.

The ground combat is annoying...simple as that. I loath it. In fact I am changing to Tactical captain just so I can get through the away missions faster and get back into my ship. It entails little more than jamming 1 of 5 buttons and hitting the F key near objects. I try to roleplay in my head that I am a Starfleet officer doing something exciting but when I see ANOTHER gang of Klingons, like the ones I've faced 12 times already, it gets old.

I bought it. I will play the first month, maybe two. If it gets better I will continue. If not I will fire them as I have every other MMO since UO beta.

Well, LC8 as of last night. Having a blast with my friends. We've been doing Episodes and just finished two of the Romulan ones last night. (Minefield and Divide et Impera) Very cool, loved Minefield, made me miss DS9 a bit. hehe.

Sorry dude, I already have reserved to hand out my keys to people. You get keys when you get the Collector's edition. 3 keys to be exact. I think they are good for 10 days of trial time.

I did, but I am ashamed of Cryptic, they ruined Champions Online for me, and the lag is just plain unbearable, potential though, fix the lag and I am fine with it

So i'm debating heavily on getting this game. I wanted to see what you guys think of the game for me.

First, I never liked the Star Trek, lore, story, etc... Never really got into the show, movies, or books.

I enjoy games like AoC, Warhammer Online, WOW (for a few years), as well as shooters. I thought EVE was alright, just too slow for my taste.

Overall, can you guys give me an honest review of the game? A short description of your experience in the game and a few things you like and dislike about the game?

And lastly, is it worth that price tag on it as well as the monthly fee?

Well first off if you're not a Star Trek fan the game I'm not sure that you'll really like it. That's who it is primarily made for. I mean sure you can still get into the game but actually being a Star Trek fan will play a big role in your enjoyment in my opinion.

The good:
1-Space combat is AWESOME. They really made this great and it is tons of fun.
2-Everything on one server, easy to add friends and coordinate with them. Everything is instanced which as I understand sets it up to run a little smoother on your end.
3-Price is standard. New game price, typical subscription fee.

The bad:
1-BUGGED. Lots of bugs, as I understand some that have been reported since the beginning of closed beta still have not been fixed.
2-Unfinished - Klingons are a playable race but there is barely any content for them.
3-Ground Combat - Just doesn't feel as well thought out as space.

So take that for what it's worth. Overall I enjoy it and I'm glad I bought it although I've been in our servers more than playing it. I haven't even hit LC yet lol. It's a good game and if they actually work on improving it then I'd say it has potential. It's not WoW by any means but it doesn't have to be.

I tested it, didnt like the fact that it was "WoW in space", now if it were more like eve online, id be playing it now.

Well, I made Rear Admiral 5 today. All I can say is...bleah. The content gets even less interesting as you level-up. Captain was rediculously easy and Admiral was faster than Captain. Hell, in one Defend the Sector mission, which you can do many of, I made almost half a grade of Admiral.

I hate the ground combat. It is terrible. You just mash 1 over and over hoping for an exploit chance then IF you can get the crappy targeting system to change to the exposed foe you can disintegrate them.

I got into the new Borg Space in Gamma Orionis. It was neat for about an hour. I fought a cube, that was fun. I have fought about 40 cubes now. Let's just say it has lost its edge.

I don't see me giving these con-artists at Cryptic my money.

The [G] button on the ground targets the next or nearest exposed target.
The [Y] button tells all your BO's to target the one your targeting.
Switch over to a Ba'leth and start smacking the enemy, you'll force a hold and also expose chance greatly increases, then hit z and 2 to disintegrate them.

I play with some friends, I'm usually the one to go around and expose people while they have two exploit weapons and switch from target to target and getting instant kills.

Wish I had enough time to make Rear Admiral. I really want that fleet escort. So far I've enjoyed it. I'm taking my time, when I do get time to play. Going through missions and just not going to PvP matches over and over. The ground combat is poop though, camera angles shifting all over the place. At least it doesn't beam down my ship anymore.

Space combat is fun. I need to get on a fleet I suppose.

Cryptic has lowered the price of the game, 1 week ago, and yesterday they added 60 additional days of gameplay to anyone who purchases the game from the Atrai website. This is a slap in the face to those of us who pre-ordered. It is an obvious money-grab. Clearly Cryptic has no intention of supporting the game, much less put any real development into it. I am done with this polished turd until I see some strong evidence that Cryptic is going to fix the broken, buggy, shallow, and wholely uninteresting product.

There have been a lot of bugs, especially in the higher level areas of the game. Sometimes exiting an system to fix it works. I think they are in the 600k number of reported bugs now. I still have a few broken bugs on my end, (tact captain not finishing that mission).

I believe that the leveling was a bit too quick for a lot of people. 1 month to cap out seems like some bad design there, but I suppose it helps those people that try to level out and finish everything so that they can move on to the next big thing.

Just hit Rear Admiral last night, tossed all my stuff into my new ship and was just flying around with it for a while.
I think it will take me a while to actually finish that ship. If I want to go with all Anti-protons or upgrade to Admiral Tetryon weapons. I think I have a lot of PvP to do for all that equipment.

I am loving my Assault escort though. Went with stock Prometheus design. Damn I wish it actually had multi vector assault mode.

Damn. Just tried to do a Infected last night and it was tough. That final part Fact or Fiction and beyond to the Borg Queen's final chambers was tough to activate. I think we need a dedicated science officer / healer.

Had to deal with borgs on the main platform and also the ones guarding the shield generator which was guarded by a shield and had to be disabled by entering a sequence at the same time (thank goodness for vent.)

Too bad one part was glitched and one of the generators was glitched outside of the forcefield and we were unable to upload a virus to disable it for us to complete it. I think we're gonna try again tonight and try to find a science officer to distract the borgs long enough so we can disable the forcefields.

I feel so geeky typing that all out.

Captain's log supplemental. After re-routing the forcefields that was protecting the main shield generators. A Glitched occured in which one member of our Away Team was trapped within the forcefield. Suffice to say as soon as he was near full assimilation he was able to pass through the forcefield. We overrode the nanite programming and attached a pattern enhancer on him, and were able to beam him up and reverse the Borg assimilation attempt.

You didn't like Bridge Commander or Star Fleet Command III????????

Anyways, the rumor 5 years ago when this game was announced between myself and all my college buddies was that we were all going to pick this game up. We'll have to coordinate and make sure we're all on the same server lol.

I'm hoping to try the beta or a free trial first though.

How is the game then? I loved SFC III btw... Please let us know... cuz I really want this game but need an extra 15 bucks a month

Well...I would try the game if there was a trial. Just going to keep waiting.

Me too at this point due to tight finances.

In the MMO world unfortunately though, trials usually start the death of a game. They're the ultimate in MMO advertising, signaling that not enough users have signed up.
