I'd go with the single 5850.

Here's my philosophy: Always pick a fast single card solution over a slightly faster multi-card solution. Remember that not all games are going to support multi-card setups, but pretty much every game is going to rock on a fast single card rig. Also, if you get the single card rig, there's always the option of adding a second one later, which gives you a value advantage over getting a multi-card setup from the beginning.

In terms of performance.......Xfire 5770 beats the 5850 or atleast matches it, no doubt about it.....reviews say so

Xfire 5770 scales extremely well, probably one of the best

Xfire 5770 is a great budget solution

5850 is more expensive but you have to take into consideration that you will be able to Tri-Fire or Xfire with this in the future for a lot better performance

Tri-Fire: 5850 + 5950

Xfire: 5850 + 5850

The cards will get cheaper in the future too so you won't be paying a ton of money if you Xfire a 5850 in the future, and the 5950 is coming out Q1 2010 which is this quarter so that will let you Tri-fire for cheaper

since it isn't much cheaper, if cheaper at all, go with the single 5850 for now, and then you'll be able to further future proof your rig if you get like pew pew said another 5850 or 5950 later in the future.
sure it will sound great to say you have crossfire 5770 right now, but again, it isn't cheaper so i think its an easy decision to get the single gpu now. you can always overclock the hell outta the 5850 too without any problems or concerns either, making its performance jump

The thing you have to realize is that 2 modern PCI express graphics cards sitting side by side in a single case is an inferno. It takes a lot of power and generates a lot of heat. I always go with the single card.
