Somewhere in the question it probably said that the <3 symbol was a function that they described later like you take the first number to the power of the second so like

2 <3 4

would be

2^4 = 16.

But that is just my guess. I have seen problems like that on algebra 1 tests back in the day but the symbol is usually like a diamond or square.

If your teacher did not define "<3" as a binary operation then it is probably a typo, this is backed more so if you are not even studying binary operations in your class.

Ya, like i said, if the teacher didn't tell you what the operation was, or say that you needed to figure out what the operation was, then she made a mistake. Either i could have been

i think it might have something to do with absolute value

The absolute value is a number surrounded by these |#| and absolute value is the distance from zero example: 3 + |-6|= 9 absolute value of -6 is six it is six digits away from zero. Im in 8th grade doing freshman math lewl.
