2012! Your Opinion!

Ramp's quote hits it right on the head, for the most part. I've done a little research on this (the subject comes up on nearly every board, so I've rehearsed arguments frequently), so I can offer a little more insight. The Mesoamericans believed that the gods created the world, but were unsatisfied with their work, destroyed it, and created it again. It's a cycle, in which we are in the fourth iteration. That was the explanation for the presence of the number four in so many natural things - four limbs, etc. The Mesoamericans believed that the third cycle ended on the fourteenth B'ak'tun.

Diverge: A B'ak'tun is to a Katun what a year is to a month, or a month is to a week, or even what a pound is to an ounce. It's a set amount of a previous, smaller unit of measurement. In terms of extended periods of time, measurements were about as regular as the metric system, using a base twenty instead of a base ten system. So: 0.0 through 19, then 1.0 to 1.19, then 2.0 to 2.19, so on and so forth. A B'ak'tun is approx 395 years.

Thus, the Mesoamericans speculated that the current cycle would end on the fourteenth B'ak'tun as well. I don't know how logical this was: did they think that previous iterations were destroyed on the fourteenth b'ak'tun, or was it possible that it was an arithmetic (2,4,6,8...) or geometric (3.25, 6.5, 13, 26...) sequence, or was it possible that it was random?

If anything should happen, I prefer to believe that it is the next creation, not the next destruction. 2013 could be the rise of another major life form, even if the concept of life is brought into question, e.g., sentient machines. I don't know what the Mayans believed would happen, although I am certain that they knew that the world would not be utterly destroyed. There are messages dated for a time well past the Gregorian Dec 21st, 2012. I can't think of any examples now, but I could do some digging if prompted enough.

Tbh, Im more worried about us cocking up the Olympics infront of the other nations instead of the world ending

My opinion is that nothing is going to happen.. at all.

All those crack heads that built shelter underground are all going to look like the biggest morons ever, and I'm going to laugh at them. =D

Do the planets line up? Yes.
Does that meen something could happen? Yes
Does that meen were going to die in 2012? No
I honestly used to believe in that crap before the movie came out, but I did my research and got smarter than to fall into it again. However I do tell you something that did infact get me VERY VERY p-d off. The day I was sitting at the computer looked behind me and saw the IHC commercial... they fear marketed and you will NEVER see me buy anything from sony ever again.

woo-hoo! i <3 doomsday threads!

if I am understanding this correctly, people who predict the end of the world will be rewarded with <maybe> a few hours between when humanity knows the end is coming till the end is actually here in which to say, "Ha-Ha - told you so!" If the world does end, I plan to kill these people immediately. No way I'm spending my last few hours listening to some preachy hippie talk about how he knew all along :P

if nothing happen this pass 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years nothing will hapen in the next 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Well an asteroid slammed into the Yucatan and wiped out the dinosaurs roughly 65,500,000 years ago.

...or there was that time when an object the size of Mars slammed into our planet like 4,600,000,000 years ago. Which helped to create the Moon. Possibly the Tunguska event which happen 102 years ago...that one could have been bad.

I guess I'm just spit balling, but a lot of **** can happen in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Oh, and yeah I know it was ment to be taken as sarcasm.

no. nothing will happen. my bio teacher went to where the mayans lived. and his tour guide said the dates of the modern days and the mayan days are different so we don't even know if the day is actually December 21, 2012. so....

well...technically, something will happen.

Because of the global mass hysteria generated by fear of the unknown that the alleged 2012 end-of-the-world-scenario will build into, fears and anxieties will mount until an odd crescendo is reached on the day before the believed end-of-the-world.

Y2K, not believed to be an end-of-world scenario, was still stressful for many people. Recorded global instances of stockpiling of emergency supplies and people bracing for who-knows-what was greeted with relief and self-irony when nothing happened on the first day of the new year. Y2K was not believed to be a dire situation, just inconveniencing. Myths about planes falling from the sky and microwaves no longer properly cooking popcorn were proved to be wildly exaggerated.

Because 2012 is conscientiously construed to be much more ominous in nature, people's belief and their reaction will be more pronounced. Rioting, looting, general civil breakdown could easily occur in heavily populated areas.

I'll be in my cave with my stockpile of toilet paper, ammo, and pop-tarts.

LOL! of course not but i think it is especially funny because 12/21/12 is my birthday! that would kinda suck too because i would live to 16 then on my birthday i would die =(

Y2K Was a SCAM to gather the worlds oil and for Bill Gates to release Windows ME to scam everyone into thinking it won't crash. HA!!!!!!!! RAWR no i don't think anything will happen maybe some mass hysteria is all.

Each time the end the world is predicted. They are always wrong. Here are all the predictions of when the world would end and each time they where wrong. Before 2012 it was 2006. Then 2000. And 1990, 1988, 1987, 1986, 1985, 1984, 1982, 1980, 1975, 1974, 1970, 1967, 1960, 1957, 1953, 1948, 1940, 1936, 1919, 1915, 1914, 1891, 1856, 1850, 1844, 1832, 1830, 1794, 1792, 1736, 1689, 1669, 1533, 1524, 1496, 1346, 1284, 1205, 1033, 1005, 1000, 992, 968, 500, 375, 365, 200, 90, 60, 30. So you see The end hasn't came and all this shows they are wrong!! Through out history the end has been predicted but has never happened so, whats the point of worrying?

Anyway, I don't believe that something special will happen BUT global warming is rising, the icebergs are melting, the water is rising and we will soon have water shortage.Αll these are true facts that everybody know.If we continue to pollute our environment and destroy our great nature then nature will take revenge. And this will happen soon if we continue to pollute and destroy at this rate.We all need to think the results of our actions and take action. Our planet need us.We MUST take action not only for us, not only for our planet but also for our children who will pay for our own actions. That is what I wanted to say.And I don't believe that world destruction will come at 2012.:)

O_O

Yeah, that will be... interesting, to say the least.

I was recently in Belize, and I was exploring the Mayan ruins of Xunatunich with our guide Elfigo Panti, the ancestor of the great herbalist. He told us that, according to the myths he had been raised on in his Mayan village, their great god (Can't remember name) would descend to the underworld, and play the ball game (played with pads on elbows and knees) against the gods of the underworld. If he won, life would resume. If he lost, time and space would freeze forever.

The only thing that is going to happen: people are going to freak out in a mass hysteria and basically buy everything at their local grocery store and hide in their *end of ze world shelter* (their basement) for a few days. Thus causing lots of panic, traffic, mass shortages of toilet paper and bottled water, and people realizing after the the hype is gone that they freaked over the end of the world that never happened.

Well I guess that the OPs question was answered. Someone lock this.
