So I was watching Ides play Sturmovik the other day and we got talking about this (again)...

Would it not be the most amazing game ever if you could be anything in WWII. I mean, like a total war game. You can be a fighter/bomber/transport pilot...a Marine...a paratrooper...any of a number of DoD-like classes...a tank driver. I mean, just...anything and everything. A total re-creation of WWII. You think flanking the bridge is epic--what about landing behind enemy lines and heading out across the country solo? Or what about that stinking MG mowing everybody down? Call for an air strike, baby.

I understand that there is really no way that servers could run something like this (even if they split it up into several smaller theaters of war, the maps would still be epically huge) right now, but...if this game existed I would never play any other game because I'd never get tired of it. So many possibilities.

You could even have random events completely made-up happening. Commandeer a German sub and run amok with your squad. eGO clan could take over a city and run it as our own little base of operations. lol

What "class"/role do you think you'd be?
What sort of crazy junk would you try to pull off by yourself or as a group?

I can think of tons of "roles" I'd wanna be or shenanigans I'd like to try to pull off, but one of the things I'd love to do is collect eGO's finest, try to sneak a transport or something deep into enemy territory, unload, and then watch them mow over superior numbers of inferior players.

If this could happen, and taking damage wouldn't actually hurt, I would be a Canadian Soldier with two captured german MG42's in each hand. Then I'd go in gunz blazin'.

I would be the Hero who comes in with the nuke to destroy all the enemies lol.

I would boom head shot you from a mile away with mah snipah rifle :P

uhh.... HAHAHAH, oh man, please tell me you're kidding.

You guys have never heard of World War II Online? It was an MMO back in late 90's early 2000's I think.

Axis vs. Allies, Britain and mainland Europe is the battlefield. You pick your side. The battles never end. You are playing 24 hours a day to win the war. You spawn in Belgium? Good luck, you're driving REAL TIME to the front lines. You had to drive 2 to 3 hours in a Sherman to reach the front lines and guess what? When you got there, there's a panzer waiting in the bush and he 1-shots your puny Sherman. Yes, go back and try again for another 2-3 hours.

You want to fly? Take a bomber across the English channel. It will take you 30 minutes real-time to reach the French coast, have fun. You want infantry? Well, you can walk for a couple hours to the nearest depot, or you can hop on a troop carrier and roll towards the front with a squad of your buddies.

This game was the single best re-creation of World War II. The problem? It was sooo big that there were no such things as true front lines with a bunch of players. The netcode was too bad to support big combat. And it took too long to go somewhere and when you got there you usually died in minutes. But it was the real deal. I played it for months. The point is, this game would allow you to literally do anything you want. Real-estate was near realistic scale, you could drive a tank, a half track, a tank-killer, a fuel truck... a bomber, a fighter, a soldier, an AT soldier, a sniper... It was the planetside++ of WWII. Fighters were even joystick enabled.

Anyways, thanks for that little bit of reminiscing... brings back good good memories with that game.

I think the horror stories of netcode problems were the main reason I never tried that game. Trying a modern (or only slightly "sci-fi") version of the game might work better now that more people have decent (e.g., not dial-up) network connections. ;)

That sounds amazing!

Well gee thanks ron, for crushing my hopes and dreams and spirits all while making me out to e a fool for having no knowledge of said game. :P

What about bots, hmmm? Get a bunch of those (not too far-fetched, seeing as how there are thousands upon thousands of NPCs in games like WoW) to generally form the "front lines", all set to (generally...of course with exception based off of players' actions) pretty much follow the flow of WWII's timeline as it was...

I played it, it was awesome man. I would fly a fighter into mainland europe and just patrol for hours and hours, strafing a tank here and there, you could fly unchecked if you were lucky enough to get a fighter spawn (they were limited). Say what you want, but it was an immersive experience at the time.
