Ron? Ron Paul? Where are you to stop this pointless bickering? Ron!?
Also as a prime machine gunnist myself, I much prefer the .50 over the 42 because of the overheating, When Im lugging that thing around I want to know I can keep a constant rate of fire down while my teammates move forward cause the other guys are keeping their heads down.
haha, sorry, I decided to let this one play out. Not sure why. I guess I have to get involved
*deep breath*
Opinions and subjective theories aside, why don't we look at some numbers?
Take a look at the numbers for weapon usage on our servers, which is a veritable microcosm (macrocosm perchance?) of the dods community.
What does it say when 12.25% of all kills recorded are from the Springfield versus 11.37% for the K98 Scoped? Is it better? No, to me, it says nothing because the Springfield is the most effective weapon on dod_strand and these stats are surely affected by this observation. The .30 Cal has very little use in a map like Avalanche because the only place it can deploy safely for more than a minute is the bridge overlooking Allied 1st, whereas the MG42 can perch above Axis second for seemingly minutes on end. Is that to say that the .30 Cal has no use in any map or is inferior to the MG42?
See where I'm going with this? You can make a case for the effectiveness of a weapon based on its utility in a certain map or situation.
Mp40 vs. Thompson? Good lord, I really don't want to go digging three months back to find the actual stats (EDIT: okay, I went back), but let me say this: they are negligible. Which is better? In terms of usage, it is far more effective than the Mp40 with over 6% more kills. Why? There are probably more new players playing Allies and using the Thompson. How about that for a subjective theory? But wait, here's some evidence. The Thompson is chosen far more often than the MP40 but the average Kills per Death ratio of the MP40 is .92 versus the Thompson's .83. Maybe the Thompson is better but the Axis play better with the MP40. Regard some information I posted a couple months back:
Code:
MP40
"Damage" "40"
"Accuracy" "0.055"
"AccuracyMovePenalty" "0.1"
"Recoil" "2.2"
"Penetration" "1.0"
"FireDelay" "0.09"
"IdleTimeAfterFire" "5.0"
"IdleInterval" "5.0"
"BulletsPerShot" "1"

"secondary_ammo" "None"

Thompson
"Damage" "40"
"Accuracy" "0.055"
"FireDelay" "0.085"
"AccuracyMovePenalty" "0.1"
"Recoil" "2.15"
"Penetration" "1.0"
"FireDelay" "0.085"
"IdleTimeAfterFire" "5.0"
"IdleInterval" "5.0"
"BulletsPerShot" "1"
"WeaponType" "SubMG"

MP40 = longer firing delay, greater recoil, same damage, accuracy, clip size, accuracy movement penalty and all else. On paper, the thompson is slightly better. Not huge, slightly. Conclusion: play to your preference because no weapon has a clear advantage over another.
BAR vs. STG44? Look, support is
my class and so I consider myself an authority on the matter, but that aside, the STG has identical statistics as the BAR (as noted on countless occasions previously) SAVE for the fact that the STG has 33% more ammunition per magazine. The tradeoff? STG gets 7 magazines and the BAR gets 13, so the BAR's overall capacity for damage is higher since it gets more bullets. This is how the dev's thought they'd settle the issue of magazine size. It failed, obviously, because there's not a support infantryman here that can use all 13 magazines in one life. Winner? STG44.
Machine guns, blah blah, play to your preference but take note of the fact that the MG42 is utilized in 4% more kills than it's allied counterpart.
K98 vs. the Garand? In my experience the K98 is a far more effective instrument of killing than the Garand, which is not to say that I haven't met people who can conduct a symphony orchestra with a Garand. There are good players on either side, I've just noticed many more using the K98.
Finally, let us address the crux of this thread. Which team is better? Sure, it depends on the map, the players using certain weapons, and the tactics employed by those players, but... if I had absolutely had to win a game, and if someone told me to choose a team on which to win that game, I'm playing Axis, and so are most players on eGO servers.
According to the September War report (not this september and likely very pre-orangebox), the clear winner is
The Axis Team
