Axis or Allies?

Ron? Ron Paul? Where are you to stop this pointless bickering? Ron!?

Also as a prime machine gunnist myself, I much prefer the .50 over the 42 because of the overheating, When Im lugging that thing around I want to know I can keep a constant rate of fire down while my teammates move forward cause the other guys are keeping their heads down.

I prefer the Thompson over the mp40 any day. There may be no difference but i do better with it.

Personally, I prefer the Axis weapons over the Allied, aside from the Thompson, that thing is truly a pimp-stick

I prefer German over most US.

But some of our US microbreweries are really excellent.

haha, sorry, I decided to let this one play out. Not sure why. I guess I have to get involved

*deep breath*

Opinions and subjective theories aside, why don't we look at some numbers?

Take a look at the numbers for weapon usage on our servers, which is a veritable microcosm (macrocosm perchance?) of the dods community.

What does it say when 12.25% of all kills recorded are from the Springfield versus 11.37% for the K98 Scoped? Is it better? No, to me, it says nothing because the Springfield is the most effective weapon on dod_strand and these stats are surely affected by this observation. The .30 Cal has very little use in a map like Avalanche because the only place it can deploy safely for more than a minute is the bridge overlooking Allied 1st, whereas the MG42 can perch above Axis second for seemingly minutes on end. Is that to say that the .30 Cal has no use in any map or is inferior to the MG42?

See where I'm going with this? You can make a case for the effectiveness of a weapon based on its utility in a certain map or situation.

Mp40 vs. Thompson? Good lord, I really don't want to go digging three months back to find the actual stats (EDIT: okay, I went back), but let me say this: they are negligible. Which is better? In terms of usage, it is far more effective than the Mp40 with over 6% more kills. Why? There are probably more new players playing Allies and using the Thompson. How about that for a subjective theory? But wait, here's some evidence. The Thompson is chosen far more often than the MP40 but the average Kills per Death ratio of the MP40 is .92 versus the Thompson's .83. Maybe the Thompson is better but the Axis play better with the MP40. Regard some information I posted a couple months back:

Code:
MP40
"Damage" "40"
"Accuracy" "0.055"
"AccuracyMovePenalty" "0.1"
"Recoil" "2.2"
"Penetration" "1.0"
"FireDelay" "0.09"
"IdleTimeAfterFire" "5.0"
"IdleInterval" "5.0"
"BulletsPerShot" "1"
"WeaponType" "SubMG"
"clip_size" "30"
"primary_ammo" "DOD_AMMO_SUBMG"
"secondary_ammo" "None"
"weight" "20"
"item_flags" "0"
"printname" "#Weapon_MP40"
"bucket" "0"
"bucket_position" "1"

Thompson
"Damage" "40"
"Accuracy" "0.055"
"FireDelay" "0.085"
"AccuracyMovePenalty" "0.1"
"Recoil" "2.15"
"Penetration" "1.0"
"FireDelay" "0.085"
"IdleTimeAfterFire" "5.0"
"IdleInterval" "5.0"
"BulletsPerShot" "1"
"WeaponType" "SubMG"
"clip_size" "30"
"primary_ammo" "DOD_AMMO_SUBMG"
"secondary_ammo" "None"
"weight" "20"
"item_flags" "0"
"printname" "#Weapon_Thompson"
"bucket" "0"
"bucket_position" "1"

MP40 = longer firing delay, greater recoil, same damage, accuracy, clip size, accuracy movement penalty and all else. On paper, the thompson is slightly better. Not huge, slightly. Conclusion: play to your preference because no weapon has a clear advantage over another.

BAR vs. STG44? Look, support is my class and so I consider myself an authority on the matter, but that aside, the STG has identical statistics as the BAR (as noted on countless occasions previously) SAVE for the fact that the STG has 33% more ammunition per magazine. The tradeoff? STG gets 7 magazines and the BAR gets 13, so the BAR's overall capacity for damage is higher since it gets more bullets. This is how the dev's thought they'd settle the issue of magazine size. It failed, obviously, because there's not a support infantryman here that can use all 13 magazines in one life. Winner? STG44.

Machine guns, blah blah, play to your preference but take note of the fact that the MG42 is utilized in 4% more kills than it's allied counterpart.

K98 vs. the Garand? In my experience the K98 is a far more effective instrument of killing than the Garand, which is not to say that I haven't met people who can conduct a symphony orchestra with a Garand. There are good players on either side, I've just noticed many more using the K98.

Finally, let us address the crux of this thread. Which team is better? Sure, it depends on the map, the players using certain weapons, and the tactics employed by those players, but... if I had absolutely had to win a game, and if someone told me to choose a team on which to win that game, I'm playing Axis, and so are most players on eGO servers.

According to the September War report (not this september and likely very pre-orangebox), the clear winner is

The Axis Team

axis rifle for sure. with either rifle you have to hit the person. and with the garand you have to hit TWICE. one shot kill (mostly) for sure. and the mg42 just dominates there is no question.

Ron, I have an orchestra concert next week. If Maestro Clark pulls out the Garand to conduct it with, I am running away. First time a musician makes a mistake "BAM". The Maestro's kill to death ratio goes up one!!

Allies due to the Thompson and blue allies with Thompson vs all k98 = allies win

The axis rifle is obviously the better one since its a one shot kill most of the time. Harder to aim yes but obviously the better gun.
I also prefer the MG42 over the .30 Cal because you can run past the .30 Cal at times and even get in between the ROF and shoot the gunner.
In my opinion, the Axis have the better guns in all classes except the assault...Those magical thompson bullets =/

It's obvious that we all aren't going to agree, so lets agree to disagree and leave it at. Depending on what you prefer to use is what you'll be better with. All the stats in the world won't change anybody's opinion.

I don't know what the game designers were thinking, but it's rather silly that they made the 1903 sniper more powerful than the garand, since both are 30-06. Instead of balancing the weapons I would have made them more realistic, ie getting shot in the chest with the garand kills you, etc.
I prefer the garand over the k98. The k98's iron sight is completely useless.

M1 Garand<K98; I hate the pointy ironsight on the Garand, and it doesn't do nearly enough damage for a 30-06.
Thompson>MP40; Just personal preference here, although this is skewed because of the superiority of the next:
BAR<<<<<<STG44; No argument here, it's all about the STG44, particularly due to the magazine size, but Ron said all there is to be said about this debate.
Springfield>K98k; This one is personal, I just like the Springfield scope a little better.
.30 Cal<MG42; Nothing can stop a team quite as fast as a good MG42 gunner with that high rate of fire.
Bazooka<Panzerschreck; I'm just awful with the Carbine, and the C96 is unreal at point-blank range.
Colt>Luger (stock); I can't stand the look and sound of the Luger; it seems like a toy gun to me, so I replaced it with a Desert Eagle.
Knife<Shovel; Personal preference, it just feels more solid to me.

Thus, Allies<Axis, based purely on weapons. It's personal, but feels like the Axis has more "powerful" weapons.

Most of the time I just pick the weapon that depends on the situation.
Though I gotta say MG42 bests the 30 Cal any day.

Really? I've come to use it to snipe from time on time and it works perfect

American Rifleman < German Rifleman . The k98 is pretty much like carrying a AWP whitout the recoil XD

American Assault > German Assault

American Support > German Support

American Sniper > German Sniper. Though the german sniper is more powerful I've never come to handle the scope, thus the springfield can aim and shoot in a second.

American MG < German MG In my opinion the german's mg has a higher accuracy, ROF and damage.

American Rocket = German Rocket

In my opinion giving the carbine to the rocketman is a complete waste, I've even come to choose that class only for that weapon, I could kill half of the enemy team with it :D

cya

I've been noticing myself throwing down my MP40 and swapping it for the Thompson. It just seems to do more damage. I don't snipe, so no arguement there. I'll take any MG, and prefer Garand overd Kar simply because i usually miss.
